I haven't seen (nor heard) them yet. Isn't it sad that they wait and struggle to emerge after 17 years, only to be gobbled up by a bird almost the instant they arrive?
Here in the South, they're very common anyway and I don't know if this brood (Brood II?) will affect us. I do seem to recall a very noticeable difference a time or two in the past (17 yrs?) in which a larger population appeared. I look forward to their arrival.
Hundreds of them. Not as many as 17 years ago (there's been a ton of development in that time), but I need to hose off my house, every single morning. The sound (which is like a 1950s flying saucer effect), is endless, and annoying.
I'm in Northern VA, and as I stated, we have plenty of them. I think it's a matter of how much development has gone on in the last 17 years. Where I am, specifically, there has been little. In the county as a whole, a lot.
It's possible we won't see any where I live in Loudoun County, since most of the houses in my neighborhood were built in the late 1990s. However, when Brood X emerged in 2004, I lived in a Fairfax County neighborhood that had also been built in the late 1990s and there were millions of cicadas. Who knows?
I finally saw one, that's ONE, cicada. Felt it would be more accurate. I crunched it under my shoe when it was dark going to work on Friday. If I see any more I'll post a picture.
