An aphorism is not dialog - it is a SINGLE SENTENCE statement that conveys a CONCEPT or abstract idea;
for example: "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"

my favorites:

"You don't sell the dream of a lifetime"
- Harmonica in ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

"Time kills critics"
- Franz Liszt in LISZTOMANIA

" 'Deserves' got nuthin' to do with it"*
- Billy Muny in UNFORGIVEN

more later

*always useful when discussing who got "robbed" of an Oscar!

"Are you talkin' to ME?" -- Travis Bickel. Sums up his entire point-of-view toward the end of the film and influences its outcome.

not an aphorism - its too specific to the film
an aphorism has a universal quality that makes a statement about life

"Ain't this somethin'? I told my pap and mam I was coming to mountains to trap and be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. Says "Son, make your life go here, here's where the peoples is. Them mountains is for animals and savages."

I says, "Mother Gue, the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world", and by God, I was right."

"The Jundland Wastes are not to be traveled lightly."

---Obi-Wan Kenobi, "Star Wars"

More of a bit of Tatooine-centric advice than a useful aphorism for Earth-bound movie-goers.

"It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet."

Guess.

And by the way, "Charlie don't surf" IS an aphorism in so much that it sums up Duvall's philosophy, and thus the wider mindset he represents, in that war. It's also very funny. Just reading it here made me crack up. smile
