This is actually a touching and well-made film -- not the sentimental goop that some might have been expecting from the old-fashioned source novel and the Disney name. With a large cast of name players (Jane Wyman, Agnes Moorehead, Karl Malden, Richard Egan, Adolphe Menjou, etc.), it was Disney's most expensive live-action film to that time. Ms. Mills more than held her own amid that company. But the box office was disappointing, and Disney pulled back from such ambitious ventures.
