.....I hope I'm right because I still find odd Sensei Manderley didn't recognize her.....
Wonderful, Angelillo! Is it really her? I've been racking my brain for a day or two now, but I could never recognize her from that picture or even imagine it was her. Still can't.
It's funny, too, because, while no one hardly ever speaks of her anymore, within the last week I had a lengthy discussion about her with my partner. I had again seen two of her near-final 1950 films within a week-or-two of each other recently, A LIFE OF HER OWN and OUR VERY OWN, and was marvelling at how good---and how memorable---she always was in these kinds of brassy, strong roles. I've always liked her in the films I saw, but have yet to see them all. I really SHOULD take the time. She was VERY, VERY underrated in her acting days, and should have gotten far better pictures. There probably is a story as to why she didn't. I wonder what it is.

That should be enough to make me doubt about her.
When I focus on the top of the face I can "see" her (the rest might be problematic but we're used now with those strange "painted" portraits).
Actually her name popped up as soon as I saw that picture.

There's an unusual gap between 1935 and 1937 : I wonder what happened. I think that kind of gap was rare at that time for a young promising actress.
It's quite surprising : when I check her filmo I realize I've seen mostly the movies she did in the 30s...and only 2 after that decade : THE PRIVATE AFFAIRS OF BEL AMI +THE LONG NIGHT. Never seen A LIFE OF HER OWN despite the fact it features a score by Kaper I love very, very much !
But maybe we're talking about a lady who is not whom I strongly think she is.
So Chickenhearted, is she or is she not Heidi...I mean... A.D. ? ?

I just googled the woman in question to determine if I could find a similar photo of her.
Didn't find a comparable one, but I DID find photos of Anne Baxter, Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan, Joan Fontaine, Ann Sothern, Angie Dickinson (!), Marie Wilson, Myrna Loy, Ann Miller, and Frankie Darrow under her name.
I'm always amazed by the connections Google makes. It's certainly untrustworthy if you're not careful and aware of exactly what you're looking for!

Well, of course, Angelillo, in reality I WASN'T right!
After you and mgh suggested Ann Dvorak, I thought it might be possible,
and agreed with you. But I was never quite sure.
I can see I can NEVER trust YOU to be the ULTIMATE authority any more.
I've always put my ultimate faith in you for the correct guess, and now you
have disappointed me. It's a little like learning Santa Claus is not real. 
FRANCES DRAKE!
I would NEVER have come up with that guess, although it turns out I've
seen a number of her films. Even knowing.....she still seems like a cipher to me.
I can't remember who guessed Luise Rainer, but when you look at the various
glamour stills of Miss Drake on Google there are definite resemblances to Rainer,
although Rainer's look seems a little more delicate and balanced.
VERY GOOD test, chickenhearted! We really screwed this one up. Of course, in
our favor you have to admit that Frances Drake is a little obscure.....and let us
weasel out of our error that way.
