Anybody know a good source for purchasing BBC Radio dramas? (Preferably on disk.) I read that in 2008 they produced a two-part drama based on Roald Dahl's The Witches and I wanted to check it out, but a quick search on Amazon turned up nothing. I don't even know if it's available for purchase to begin with, but I thought maybe there was a better source, perhaps a site that specialized in only BBC Radio dramas.

I don't think the BBC regularly release their radio dramas on CD unless there is particular demand for them.

I think a more reasonable thing to do today is keep an ear out for repeats, principally on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and record from the broadcast. 'The Witches' was last on in August 2011 according to the BBC website, but that doesn't mean it won't get repeated again soon.

Yup....unless there is demand for it, or unless it's Doctor Who, it rarely sees the light of day.

That being said, please check your e-mails smile

I don't agree with the other posters who say BBC radio dramas are only sporidcially released.

In fact there are LOTS of them - just do a search under BBC audio books and you will find a very wide variety and wuite a big range.

This site for example:

Yes, there's a nice (and constantly changing) "Selections" catalogue out there, but what is available on CD is nowhere even close to what is broadcast...I'm sure there are lots of reasons for this, not JUST demand, but either way, if you hear a drama on BBC Radio and fancy having another listen, chances are that it is not on CD and the best way to find it is via repeat or another source.

That's too bad. I imagine there is a wealth of stuff that will probably never be heard again after all the hard work that went into making them in the first place. frown

And I just replied to your email.

Yes...my own "Holy Grail" of BBC audio stuff is the CD of the "An American Werewolf In London" drama...if you are the slightest bit of a fan of the movie, it's a "Must-Listen", as it fleshes the story out a bit (who was the original werewolf, why was he anywhere near the moors, and why the hell does Brian Glover's character care??), and features some of the original cast. I have the tape, and it did have a very limited CD release but there are not many around and the prices for second-hand copies are ludicrous (hundreds of pounds, unless you are dfamn lucky...so far, I have not been lucky!). I would love a re-release but chances are slim...

...but you never know...
