Part of my three months trip of the USA way back in '86. So many great memories...
Florida: Above all I loved the Keys and all the little isolated shallow-water bays dotted along. I was amazed at how few peope there were. A bunch of us had some of these places to ourselves. The pelicans at twilight at Key West. The sunsets. Key West in general - the cats in Hemingway's garden. Getting thrown out of Sloppy Joe's for being too noisy.
I also passed through Miami and spent some time in Fort Lauderdale. Particularly spectacular girls on rollerskates. Despite that, the best memories are from the Keys.
I'm putting my sunshades on.

I love Florida, always have. My ex-wife was born there, grew up in an Art Deco house, complete with an ascending staircase enclosed in a semicircular tower of glass brick.
First time I ever saw palm trees was in Florida. The moonlight there is lovely, with great galleons of clouds scudding around the sky, not to mention the flowers, like night-blooming jasmine.
I've often thought of moving there, especially since it's more affordable than San Diego. (But then, most places are more affordable than San Diego!) But I've hesitated because of 2 details: a. Florida gets hurricanes. (I know, San Diego gets earthquakes..., but not very often, and not as long-lasting.), and b. Florida is only near Florida; so if you want to travel elsewhere, there really isn't any other place to go. (In San Diego, I can drive, repeat, drive, to: Tucson, Phoenix, Palm Springs, L.A., Las Vegas, and San Francisco, and have driven to all those places.)
But it is a lovely place, and I do love the tropics, sticky heat and all....

The Night Life of Downtown Miami and South Beach
I can get to a club at 11:35pm on a Friday night and not go home until Monday 1130am when Mekka AfterHours closes.
Mekka, Twist, Mansion, Nikki Beach, The Clevelander, Discotekka, Space, Euphoria, Story, etc...
I can't wait to go back and go HAM!
And yes, all with the help of Tina, G, Molly and the like.

I'm not sure I could name a 100 things, or even 50. Probably not even 30. And I can name as many things I hate about it as I love.
1. The winter. It almost never goes to freezing or below, and it certainly does not snow. Thank goodness!
2. "Home of the World's Most Beautiful Beaches" (at least my county)
3. A lot of the hurricanes, in the panhadle area, go to other states. Not saying I'm thankful they strike others, but a miss is a miss. Usually bring clouds, some rain, cool air, especially during the summer, which feels great.
4. Hot girls in bikinis on the beach.
5. Hot girls in bikinis along the beach roads.
6. Hot girls in bikinis in Wal-Mart.
7. Hot foreign girls who come here for a few months from their countries, to work and earn some money.
8. Did I mention the hot girls?
9. The ocean. Sorry, but a lake isn't good enough. I wouldn't be entirely happy to live in a land-locked state.
10. The political spectrum in most areas.
11. Some of the indiginous and foreign plant life.
12. EX home of one of the main Space shuttle launch pads. :-(
13. The thankful lack, or near complete lack thereof, or large predators.
14. The job market and tax system.
I'm out of things.

All i know is that 9 times out of 10 when there is a weird news story the story is from Florida or Arizona.
And what is with the Governor doing his best to keep as many people as possible from voting, and smiling all the while about it. That made me sick.
He doesn't think poor people should get health insurance, either.
But there are a lot of nice things about Florida. It is quite diverse, for one thing. Most people think of Florida as a tropical scene, but once you travel north of the Orlando area the scenery changes significantly. Lush green farmland, horse farms, live oak trees, and even (when you get up to Gainesville and north to Tallahassee) an actual change of seasons. I personally would rather live in north Florida (where I lived for several years while attending college) or the Florida west coast (Clearwater, St. Petersburg), than in the sweltering south (where I lived for most of my life).
Newspaper columnists in Florida joke about the "two separate countries" of SoFla and NoFla (southern and northern Florida). Southern Florida is urban, hot, damp and populated largely by transplanted New Yorkers, Michiganders and Hispanics from Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala and South America. North Florida is rural, has more seasonal variations and is mainly populated by white native Floridians (with a healthy peppering of college students). The former tends to vote more Democratic and moderate to liberal, while the rural areas are pretty much conservative and Republican. You are much more likely to get the finger while driving in South Florida, much more likely to get an extra big slice of pecan pie from the waitress with the big hair in North Florida, just for giving her a kind word and a friendly smile. So it is an oversimplification to talk about Florida in generalized terms. Much to like about either Florida you want to discuss, in any event.
