So, Nicholas is shot at, nearly drowned, defrauded, drugged, deported and driven insane to the point where he - even if accidentally - shoots and kills his own brother. The whole thing then turns out to be an insanely elaborate ploy to get him to lighten up. He, more or less, shrugs the whole thing off. Assuming that someone would even survive such an ordeal in one piece, who wouldn't think of becoming ten times the asshole they were at the film's beginning just to spite the quote-unquote "loved ones" who engineered this?
I honestly cannot think of a more disingenuous happy ending.
When i trashed this film in my thread "Films that don't deserve the Criterion Treatment:

Star Trek 2 TWOK: Without question Spocks torpedo tube on Genesis. How did that thing not burn up in the atmosphere? How did it soft land? The whole evolution of Kirk was diminished by that rewrite. Not to mention a bit of bate and switch on the viewer.
Continuing that same line of thought, any movie where a main character appears to have died at the end of the film, but miraculously ends up not being the case.

An extremely superficial reading of a complex film. For example, who's to say that Nicholas' game is actually really over at the end of the movie? One of the best American films of the 1990s, which gets better and better with each viewing.
