MONDAY, OCTOBER 7 GRAVITY---astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, head of the Hayden Planetarium, criticized some scientific aspects of the Sandra Bullock movie: 1. “Mysteries of #Gravity: Why Bullock, a medical Doctor, is servicing the Hubble Space Telescope.” 2. “Mysteries of #Gravity: How Hubble (350mi up) ISS (230mi up) & a Chinese Space Station are all in sight lines of one another.” 3. Mysteries of #Gravity: When Clooney releases Bullock’s tether, he drifts away. In zero-G a single tug brings them together.” 4. “Mysteries of #Gravity: Why Bullock’s hair, in otherwise convincing zero-G scenes, did not float freely on her head.” 5. "Mysteries of #Gravity: Nearly all satellites orbit Earth west to east yet all satellite debris portrayed orbited east to west." 6. "Mysteries of #Gravity:: Satellite communications were disrupted at 230 mi up, but communications satellites orbit 100x higher." 7. "Mysteries of #Gravity: Astronaut Clooney informs medical doctor Bullock what happens medically during oxygen deprivation." 8. THE SEXIEST WOMAN ALIVE---Scarlett Johansson received the ESQUIRE magazine honor for 2013 and is the first woman to receive the honor twice after also being picked in 2006. Johansson commented, "I'm the only woman to win twice right? You know, I gotta hustle. I'm a 28-year-old woman in the movie business, right? Pretty soon the roles you're offered all become mothers. Then they just sort of stop. I have to hedge against that with work-theater, producing; this thing with ESQUIRE." ELEMENTARY---Rhys Ifans will have at least six more appearances as Mycroft Holmes. Good to hear. I enjoyed his appearance in the first episode of season 2, and thought he had good chemistry with Miller and Liu.

I'll throw a mystery of Gravity into the mix: Shouldn't one of the main things you learn in training when running low on oxygen is to conserve it? Clooney's character shouldn't have asked her where home was, but instead said: "Shut up, you're burning oxygen."

And Quentin Tarantino telling me what the best movies of the year are is like a precocious seven year old telling me that "Sesame Street Presents Follow that Bird" is the greatest film ever made. Sesame Street? Better than My Little Pony?! The hell you say. Is the picture above of Tom Hanks and Shelley Long from "The Money Pit"? Is there "Money Pit" news?
