FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 STAR WARS: EPISODE VII---Disney announced that Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) and director JJ Abrams will rewrite the script started by Michael Arndt (TOY STORY 3). INDEPENDENCE DAY---director Roland Emmerich commented on Will Smith returning for the sequel, "It's looking good." He added that two scripts are being written---one with Smith and one without Smith. Also, Smith is in negotiations to star in the sci fi movie SELLING TIME in which a man trades seven years of his future life to relive the worst day from his past. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST---new photo of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. HELLRAISER---the remake script will be written by Clive Barker who confirmed Doug Bradley is returning as Pinhead, "Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed." BEN-HUR---the remake script will be written by John Ridley (12 YEARS A SLAVE). Timur Bekmambetov is the director. MARWENCOL---Robert Zemeckis (FORREST GUMP, BACK TO THE FUTURE) will direct this movie based on the documentary about a man who awakens from a coma suffered after a brutal attack and has no memory. He builds a 1/6 model of his attack as therapy. The script is by Caroline Thompson (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS). Zemeckis wants Leonardo DiCaprio for the starring role. HOME INVASION---movie underway about a family terrorized by two sadistic serial killers who broke into their house. Chandler Riggs (THE WALKING DEAD), Ioan Gruffudd (FANTASTIC FOUR), Natalie Martinez (UNDER THE DOME) and Bella Thorne (SHAKE IT UP) star. THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE---Andre Ovredal (TROLLHUNTER) will direct this movie about a family of morticians who receive the body of a beautiful woman whose identity and cause of death are a mystery. MURDER, SHE WROTE---NBC remake pilot of the Angela Lansbury series underway with Octavia Spencer (THE HELP) starring as Jessica Fletcher, a hospital administrator who becomes a mystery novel author and amateur sleuth. The original series ran on CBS from 1984-1996. REMY CHANDLER---NBC series underway based on the novel series about an angel who becomes a Boston private detective. SUITS---the USA Network renewed the series for Season 4. SECRETS AND LIES---ABC remake of the Australian series about a man who discovers the body of a murdered boy and becomes the main suspect. He seeks to find the real killer. ATLANTIS---the BBC America mythology series premiers on November 23. MOST WANTED---new Starz series about 1970s bank robber Nate Daniels who was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list.

Funny enough, I just saw Hellraiser for the first time this past Sunday. I think this is one movie that will actually benefit from a remake. I mean, I did like it, but the first half was really . . . creaky, not to mention had some painfully melodramatic acting from the wife and brother. The second half was better and more suspenseful, with some interesting concepts, but it felt like it ended just as it was getting going. So I welcome the remake, especially with Barker's mandate to stick with practical effects.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST---new photo of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Is it just me or was Lawrence miscast in the role. I mean I'm sure she is actually a better actress then Rebecca Romein, but didnt come close to portraying either the allure or the deadliness that Romein gave to the role. She was quote boring actually, and pouty.

My thoughts about JJ Abrams are well known already.

I thought Lawrence was fine, but I agree the Romijn was better in the role. She's not much of a thespian, but in this case she didn't need to be. She (along with her makeup/costume people) really made what could have been a horrible, thankless role work and live. I agree that Lawrence was fine as Mystique. I am guessing in Days of Future Past her character will evolve to being much closer to the Mystique from the first X-Men films. I also enjoyed Romijn in the role, and agree that she made the character memorable. In defense of Romijn, I will say that she is a better actress than many give her credit. I thought she did a great job as Alexis Meade on Ugly Betty, a role that was fairly challenging, and if played wrong, could have ruined the character and possibly the show.

I've heard that her name was kept on the film to ensure she got paid more out of respect than actually having anything of importance kept in the film it's self. Who was responsible for that "nerf herder" line? I like the very idea of hiring Brackett as much as anything else about it. It reflects a particular aspiration for quality or old-Hollywood "authenticity" Lucas had for the project at one point in its development.
