33) William McCrum's encouraging beardy words in the first beard thread: a) Why do you assume your face without a beard is the 'real face'? That's just an unconscious assumption that the values that have predominated since about 1660 are 'true'. Your 'real face' you will never fully know clean-shaven, y'know. Have you ever thought you might be falling for an old trick to get you to emasculate yourself? C.S. Lewis thought that, though he was himself clean-shaven. (b) A film prop? ????? Your persona is in your own hands. Everybody, no matter who, presents a display to the world. It is nearly always a pretence. Which is the true you? What you were told to be? What you inherited? Or what came FROM your own self-presentation? People can choose whatever they want in terms of their bodily image. As long as they have health, or can afford the effort or cost. But you should never let someone else tell you what to do with your face! If you met a woman with overly large breasts that you found unaesthetic, would you ask her to chop them off, or have surgery? They are HER secondary sexual characteristics. You are the lion. You have a mane. You can perfectly legitimately shave off your mane and you'll still be the lion. But if you let someone ELSE tell you to shave it off, you're not the lion any more. Why, the lionesses might even run away.
