MASTERS OF HORROR, eh? Interesting, I'll add it to the list (although I'm not such a big fan of anthology shows....I prefer those that have an outlined story arc).

I like anthology shows meself.
MOH is more of a showcase for well known HORROR FILM directors which is a good thing!

Sure, I can see that.

It's just that with anthology shows, I feel like I can just watch a film instead since they're basically just independent mini-films, but without the budget and ambition, and there's no "narrative" reason for me to watch the next episode.

But I will agree with you that the roster of directors on that show is intriguing.

I should also mention that it is a showcase for WRITERS also.
Last nite watched an ep based on a story by the late Richard Matheson scripted by his son!

So I just finished the first season of EXTANT. Excellent show...can't believe there has been no talk about it here. Doesn't get more hardcore sci fi than this. I'm delighted that they're doing another season.

God, I'm really struggling to find GOOD sci fi shows from the period now, after having seen so much.

But I encountered something called LOST TAPES -- a mockumentary-type horror show that apparently aired on ANIMAL PLANET a few years ago, of all places. I'll add it to the list.

You might try NOW AND AGAIN, which just recently came out on DVD in the U.S. This was a bit ahead of its time - now with the superhero craze, this would be a nice alternative and subversion of the tropes. Created by Glen Gordon Caron, there are sci-fi elements, but the emphasis is on character - and one of the best casts assembled for a show: Eric Close, Margaret Colin, Dennis Haysbert, Heather Matrazzolo, Gerrit Graham and special appearances by John Goodman.

EXTANT got renewed? What a dreary show...

Thanks for the recommendation of NOW AND AGAIN. I vaguely remember that show. It's already on the list, however, as someone mentioned it earlier in the thread. A bit outside what I'm looking for, but perhaps still worth my time. smile

As for EXTANT....well, we'll have to agree to disagree.

So I finally finished all five seasons of EUREKA. Initially, I was a bit put off by the "jolly" atmosphere and the 'science-gone-wrong' of the week type thing, but after two and a half seasons, I was into it. Whenever I needed something breezy, it was kind of cozy to return to the city and the places and the people of the town. And of course, it got better as soon as there was more of a story arc to latch on to.

Hi Thor, have you tried Person of Interest (it's kind of science fiction), or the pilot of Virtuality ?

PERSON OF INTEREST....that's the "super soldier" thing a la DARK ANGEL, isn't it?

VIRTUALITY sounds very intriguing. I'll check it out.

Thanks for the tips! I'll add them to the list.

VIRTUALITY was pretty cool. Too bad it was never picked up for a whole show.

Added CONSTANTINE to the list.

Glad you enjoyed Virtuality (sci-fi shows on fox usually equals cancelled).

Added the UK show UTOPIA to the list. I discovered this after having received a promo of the score. The 'paranormal' aspect is subtle (Nostradamus/prophet thematics), but I've seen the first episode and dig it. Violence and all. Classic British quality TV drama.

I see that it was cancelled after two seasons (typical!), but I hope those two are good, at least. So I'm mentally prepared for a cliffhanger ending.

HBO has ordered an American adaptation of Utopia, to be co-created and directed by David Fincher, with Gillian Flynn as the writer. The Guardian reported that Fincher will be directing all episodes of the series, who said "I like the characters – I love Dennis’s honesty and affinity for the nerds."

Agreed. This was a fun show, and I really enjoyed the cast. The chemistry they shared helped the show through some of the weaker episodes. Henry and Sheriff Carter are two of my favorite characters. I also liked Felicia Day's and Wil Wheaton's characters. I was disappointed that René Auberjonois never showed up on the series after a Warehouse 13 episode ended with his character moving to Eureka. Although I did like his joke about the town when he returned to a later episode of Warehouse 13.

I haven't quite decided what I think of Constantine yet. Of the three DC comic inspired shows that premiered this season (the other two being The Flash and Gotham), this is so far the weakest. The lead hasn't quite won me over yet. He certainly gets the character's anger down, but for his character to really work he needs to be more likable, so that when he starts to do things ranging from dubious to completely immoral, using the ends to justify the means, he doesn't lose the audience. I also don't like how his character seems beholden to the angel. Something the Constantine of the comics would never allow to happen. It would also help if they got some stronger scripts. I am going to give the series a few more episodes and see where things are. I do like that they are beginning to adapt stories from Hellblazer, even if it is a loose adaptation.

Wow, really? I was not aware of this, thanks. Hopefully, the American version will be able to stay afloat longer than the British. I wonder if the first two US versions will be the same as the first two UK ones, though, in terms of story.

Well, I don't know. I haven't seen THE FLASH, but I think I prefer CONSTANTINE over the more straightforward GOTHAM. Maybe it's the metaphysical and darker aspects of the former that does it for me. I agree with you that it needs a couple of more episodes to get its footing, but I like the potential elements here. It has some similarities to DOMINION, which I also kinda liked (although that veers more towards fantasy territory).

I've watched 3 episodes now of Constantine and it has not gotten any better for me. Even though it is filmed here in Atlanta, I won't watch just to see glimpses of my hometown. I've also tried watching Gotham and it too leaves me cold. I think it has to do with that I find what occurrences happened that made all of the Batman adult characters as we know them just uninteresting.

I'm down to 2 episodes of The Leftovers. It is as intriguing as it is frustrating. I really hope there is a end game, that they know where they are going. I love the acting and the writing is very strong. Just right when you get to a lull, the rug gets pulled out and you are wondering WTF just happened? Cool and eerie show but I will be steamed if there is not a satisfying conclusion or no answers.

The Strain was my favorite paranormal series this year. The first episode was a big clumsy but it got better as it went along and I am hankering for season 2 next summer.
