The 1986 "revised" edition of the New York Mets 25th anniversary yearbook.
I saw this one all over the place on local newsstands after the Mets won the '86 World Series, but for some strange reason I never bought one. It cost all of five dollars .
The Mets WS victory against Boston that year was enough for me at the time .
Carlos Delgado has just been on fire in the second half of 2008. The Delgado of old. He basically sucked in the first half. I don't know if this has anything to do with Willie Randolph being gone as Mets manager or what. (Those two were not the best of buddies, to put it kindly)
The Mets are in a position now where they have to offer him a contract at the end of the season, given what he's done in the second half with his bat playing a big part in keeping the Mets in the NL east division race.
The Phillies came to Shea this weekend 3 games behind the New York Mets in the NL east.
The Phillies won the first two games of the series, the Mets won tonight's second game of a doubleheader. (Saturday's game at Shea being postponed due to a forecasted "storm" with "high winds" which eventually turned out to be nothing ).
So, now the Phillies leave New York 2 games behind the Mets in the NL east race.
Not bad, the Mets were not going to win every game against them, but staying at least 2 games ahead in the division with the season winding down is pretty good, considering the Mets did not play their best baseball this weekend.
Mets closer Billy Wagner is finished for 2008, and possibly all of the 2009 season. Possibly for good. His career might be over. Just like that.
When you hear the term "Tommy John surgery" mentioned around baseball, especially when it concerns a 37 year old fireballing closer, a red light suddenly goes on, and you know straight out that it's not good news.

Carlos Delgado continues to hit, hit, hit. Reminding Mets fans of his younger days in Toronto, when he was one of the most feared hitters in baseball. He crushed his first home run of the night tonight off the Shea scoreboard in right center field. He hit his second one of the night beyond that hitting a sign in the right field bullpen.
Ron Darling and Gary Cohen, the Mets tv broadcasters tonight quipped on air on Sny that he was denting up the old stadium before it eventually falls to the demolition charges.

The 81 Yankee yearbook has a great comic book telling of Don Larsen's perfect game drawn by Marvel Comics legend John Romita.
Ths disappointing thing is that, I think I pulled it out a long time ago because it was part of a section on the Perfect Game - 25 Years later. I could kick myself for that.
The Mets beat the Washington Nationals 13 -10 tonight at Shea in a see-saw battle. Washington is a basement team, but to their credit they put up a fight tonight after the Mets took the early 7-1 lead.
With time running out on the 2008 regular season,and with the Phillies loss tonight, the Mets are now 3 and one half games ahead of Philadelphia in the NL east, 4 games ahead of Philly in the loss column.
The Mets bats are going right now when it counts.
Very different from the scenario at this time last year when the Mets offense could be likened to a Mack truck with a load on struggling to get up a steep hill.

Nice to see that Howie Rose, one of my favorites, the voice of the Mets on radio and one of the very best in the business, got the Fox Network national assignment today covering the first game of a doubleheader between the Mets and Braves at Shea this afternoon.
The race in the NL east between the Mets and Phils just got tighter after today's play.

Congratulations are in order for Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs, who pitched a no hitter today against the displaced Houston Astros in Milwaukee. Zambrano is coming off shoulder surgery, and that alone made the feat all the more exciting.
The long suffering Cubs look like the team of destiny this year in the NL.
Looks like the Metropolitans are in a similar position as 2007, only with less of a division lead. And the Marlins are mathematically still alive...5.5 out of the NL wild card...
