Yes widows was shocking 80s drama abt 4 cockney gangsters molls who carry on where robber hubbys left off. Pretty corny and women trying to sound tough was grating. I think it starred one of the women who is now in awful cockney soap Eastenders.

The Valley of Gwangi 7.5/10 A great idea - Cowboys vs Dinosaurs - and after the 40 minute mark it's filled with lots of lovely Harryhausen goodness. It's a lot of fun and the structure of the story is pretty solid too. James Fransiscus comes across like part Charlton Heston part Colin Friels. I always liked him in films. I also like Laurence Naismith in films and TV too. He has a nice turn here as a professor.

Blackkklansman 3.25/10 The film was quite odd. I was expecting maybe a 70s style gritty police drama approach. This played like a comedy in parts. There wasn't enough build up of tension or peril the officers were facing. The music really didn't work at all well over a few scenes. There were odd moments that felt like it was trying to go half way Tarantino-ish or somewhere along those lines, but just came across as awkward and clumsy. The ending, using real life footage that was appalling, felt really jarring and tacked on. Overall, I was pretty disappointed. I think a different director probably would have done a better job (not sure which director though). I really want to read the book and i think a documentary about this would be absolutely fascinating and probably serve the story best.

BOY ERASED (2018) - 8/10 Based upon a true story, this film tells of a gay teen-age boy (Lucas Hedges) who is forced into "conversion therapy" by his determined pastor father (Russell Crowe) and compliant mother (Nicole Kidman). Joel Edgerton is director, writer, and actor (in a supporting role as a therapist). Garrard Conley, upon whose memoir the film is based, turned down the opportunity to write the adaptation himself, as he believed a filmmaker would be better fit to translate his memoir to the big screen. The film is set in 2004, yet even by the time Conley's book was released in 2016, only a handful of states had banned gay conversion therapy, those being Vermont, California, New Jersey, Illinois and Oregon, along with the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.). Mainstream health and medical groups have rejected the underlying assumptions that LGBTQ people need to or can change their sexuality. The film claims that 700,000 LGBTQ people have been subjected to conversion therapy.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space 7/10 Genuinely good fun with some cute inventive moments. I especially liked popcorn being used as a tracing device and balloon animal tracker dogs. Seemingly made with genuine affection for 50s sci-fi.

Bob - How difficult was it to watch Boy Erased? It is an important subject but I don't know if I could sit through it based on the subject matter. It has been hard enough to read about all the ways that the therapy is used and impacts people. I haven't read Garrard Conley's memoir, so I can't say whether the film has been whitewashed or not, but it seemed rather measured to me, compared to what one might imagine some more severe forms of conversion therapy could be. Physical abuse is almost nonexistent. However, the attendees are put under psychological pressure. The therapy in this case focuses on trying to have the teenagers identify the thoughts and attitudes (towards their parents in particular) that have caused them to embrace a "deviant lifestyle." The attendees get to leave the facility each night, because this is just an "evaluation program" to determine whether they require more structured, long-term, institutional care. It's suggested in the film that nearly everyone will be recommended for the stronger therapy, but the film does not delve into what that actually entails. The film obviously wears its heart on its sleeve, but its focus is on the innocence of the LGBT people rather than the evilness of their antagonizers.

Passengers 6/10 I thought the effects were excellent throughout and really liked the designs of almost everything. Christ Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence do well carrying the film. Pratt in particular does well in what could be a very unlikeable role, in what easily could be a horror film. I remember reading the script years ago and it seems much changed, thankfully it gets rid of the ending where dozens of descendants of the two got off the ship at the end. Which would have brought up the awkward question of inbreeding. The score was pretty nice too, though the film ends on a pretty awful song being dumped on it as the credits roll.

That makes me think I might be able to watch it without being too triggered.

Father's Day 2.5/10 Robin williams and Billy Crystal are wasted in this Ivan Reitman comedy. The two chaps are told they are the father of an unlikeable runt who has gone missing so go and track him down. Bruce Greenwood has a moustache. Waste of talent all-around i'm afraid.

WRECK-IT RALPH (2012) - 8/10 In advance of watching the sequel, I decided to view the original, which I had never seen. It's a fun, colorful romp--near Pixar quality. It's got some great voice casting, starting with John C. Reilly as the soft-spoken "Ralph," and continuing with Sarah Silverman as the perky "Vanellope," Jack McBrayer as the cornpone "Fix-It Felix," Jane Lynch as the no-nonsense "Calhoun", and Alan Tudyk as the lisping "King Candy." Henry Jackman provided the energetic score.
