My mother loved country music so I've heard more than my fair share (it's still my least favorite genre) and I think he's not quite there yet, but is heading in the right direction.
As far as other non-Americans actors portraying iconic Americans, I seem to recall some negative buzz when it was first announced that Daniel Day-Lewis would be Lincoln. I think he did all right with the role.
