I actually don't mind it -- it's a nice 'macguffin'. There are any number of ways it could have come onboard. There is no inconsistency in and of itself -- it's free speculation that at the very least doesn't COUNTER anything presented thus far (unlike the plotline of the book being discussed in this thread).
Alright, let me think of ways that the egg could have possibly made it onboard the Sulaco.
1. The Queen laid it X
The queen was depicted as having a giant egg sac that the eggs needed to gestate in before they could be laid. We see barely formed eggs spill out of the sac when Ripley shoots grenades at it so the idea of the Queen laying one herself just isn't practical. Also, eggs are laid on the ground, not on some ceiling corner. Plus, she had no time to lay it because she was busy fighting the rest of the survivors!
2. The Queen laid it in the Dropship X
This is what the BluRay menu would have you believe, but this can't be the case because the egg is seen somewhere else in the Sulaco. The room is too big to be anywhere in the drop ship, and why would the drop ship have support beams with the name SULACO be engraved on the name of the Dropship?
3. The Queen snuck it onboard X
Just watch ALIENS. Every time we see the Queen, there is no evidence of an egg present anywhere on her body from the moment she leaves her nest to when she gets jettisoned from the Sulaco. You think if James Cameron wanted to use sequel bait in his own movie that he would have given the audience something, ANYTHING to hint that there was another alien or egg onboard at the end? That's not how he wrote it nor how he intended it to end!
4. Bishop brought the egg onboard X
We've been told very early on that this is Bishop's protocol.
"It is impossible for me to harm, or, by omission of action, allow to be harmed, a human being."
Bringing the alien egg onboard and leaving it exposed would be a direct violation of those parameters. And simply getting an egg is another impractical matter. He couldn't have gotten it on his way when he was reprogramming the dish to bring down the second drop ship. When the ship finally lands, he drops everything he's doing and he, Ripley and Hicks board the drop ship with nothing else.
Or maybe he landed, got an egg, went back to the Sulaco, planted it onboard and came back to Rescue Ripley? Umm. When Ripley left the dropship to fight the aliens, the countdown was at 15 minutes. According to Bishop, it takes 15 minutes just to get the drop ship from the Sulaco to the colony. So factor that in with the time it would take to infiltrate a nest he's never been in, carrying an egg all the way back to the drop ship, fly to the Sulaco, plant it, fly back all in the span of 15 minutes? No.
But what if he got the egg and just kept it on the drop ship when he picked up Ripley? If that was the case, how in the name of Satan did Bishop manage to bring the egg onto the Sulaco when the moment he stepped foot off of the drop ship he was torn in half? He couldn't possibly have gotten the egg and stuck it in the ceiling corner without legs!
5. There was another alien that snuck onto the drop ship with the Queen and somehow laid the egg X
Where? I didn't see any other alien in Alien3 or in ALIENS onboard the Sulaco. And if there was, why didn't it take part in fighting alongside the Queen, or any other time after that? All the time it had to take on the now vulnerable Ripley, Newt and Hicks was just wasted by somehow laying an egg on the ceiling corner and hoping it will hatch on it's own? That's not how the aliens work, even in the context of ALIEN3.
In conclusion, the egg was onboard the Sulaco because... they just put it there. That's really not good story telling.
