Oof, pretty bad start and I've just watched the pre credits sequence in episode one. I'll chug on though. (Actually turned out I watched episode 2, but I'm fine for watching another). Well, it's not a comedy. It's a Star Trek wannabe with a few intended laughs thrown in. The problem is the humour was a bit of pop culture referencing and a couple of mentions of colons. It was fairly painless to watch, the central story seemed ok in theory. Seems like Seth McFarlane just really wanted to direct a few eps of Star Trek. The music was solid, would like to hear more of it. With zero humour, certainly no laughs, and maybe a half smile for the end reality TV gag, and unengaging and derivative sci-fi, I'll not be watching another. I'm surprised it got made.

I just saw the 4th one, "If the Stars Should Appear." I was surprised by how traditional, and how up front, the music score was. And certain parts were a clear homage to the V'Ger cloud cues in STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. It was by Joel McNeely. This is not what one-hour drama music is supposed to sound like on TV today. It was great! And clearly it was Seth MacFarlane insisting on doing the show his way. The full-length main titles sequence with a melody is another thing he must have insisted on. Spoiler: the story was derivative of The Starlost, "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", and a little bit of "The Return of the Archons." Still, what they did with it was okay.

This was an uncomfortable episode. Way to violent for a comedy/dramedy, what ever it's trying to be. That said it had some of the funniest moments in the series thus far. Approaching the cabin and the eating scene. Again nothing really unique here, but I laughed out loud several times. Nice music too, though the temp tracking is getting a bit annoying.

I think as long as McFarlane takes things serious enough, and tones down the frat boy humor, we'll keep watching. But that means an outright knockoff of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Orville is already closer to TNG than I Dream of Jeannie was to Bewitched. They're too close for comfort when they should be perfect strangers.
