Don't know why I watched the first two episodes, but I realize I like Seth MacFarlane. He's really charismatic and perfect leading guy. While the jokes are lame his performance is wonderful. It's the shows only saving grace thus far. I really never seen him before other than during the Oscars when he did the boob song.

Oof, pretty bad start and I've just watched the pre credits sequence in episode one. I'll chug on though. (Actually turned out I watched episode 2, but I'm fine for watching another).

Well, it's not a comedy. It's a Star Trek wannabe with a few intended laughs thrown in. The problem is the humour was a bit of pop culture referencing and a couple of mentions of colons. It was fairly painless to watch, the central story seemed ok in theory.

Seems like Seth McFarlane just really wanted to direct a few eps of Star Trek.

The music was solid, would like to hear more of it.

With zero humour, certainly no laughs, and maybe a half smile for the end reality TV gag, and unengaging and derivative sci-fi, I'll not be watching another. I'm surprised it got made.

Episode three was a straight up drama, with situational humor. I actually loved a lot about it. The story centered on social/moral issues. The humor actually made me laugh out loud a few times too. And I absolutely loved the xmas special they incorporated into the episode. Further more the resolve of the character concerned remained the same. He refreshingly stood by his convictions regardless of the outcome. Which was ironic and appropriate at the same time.

To bad this show doesn't know what it wants to be. To bad it’s esthetics are all over the map. And to bad its a NG rip off. Cause it could’ve been the return of smart sci fi at least to the small screen. One further note, I really love Seth Mcfarlane. He’s ironically the best “Star Trek” captain (we never had) since Kirk. He sells the show for me.

When was episode three on? Have they moved this show already?

Who?

Anyway, at least you know a lot is not alot.

And what's lame is not caring if you're contributing to the general decline in proofing!

And now do the mature thing and do not respond to me because I'm a raging engine of irrepressible mischief.

You telling other people to do the mature thing is an oxymoron. And I laugh at the "superior intellect".

I’m enjoying it so far. I think they set a bad precedent by giving the impression that it would be laugh-a-minute with the trailer, but it does have its moments. So far, I’ve found most of the humor to my liking. I like Seth MacFarlane in his role but his boyish looks make him seem young for a captain. I’m not fond of the character Alara - yet.
I was a little tentative about ep 3 in that I wondered if we had gotten to know Bortus and Klyden well enough for such a personal story line, but I thought it went well and the ending was less predictable than I anticipated. It was obvious the idea was to be topical, but then that was also true of TOS on many of those episodes as well.
I’m willing to give it a chance and I hope it has time to find its niche. Then again, I’m still sore that “When Things Were Rotten” never got much of a chance, so I’m not holding my breath.

I just saw the 4th one, "If the Stars Should Appear." I was surprised by how traditional, and how up front, the music score was. And certain parts were a clear homage to the V'Ger cloud cues in STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. It was by Joel McNeely.

This is not what one-hour drama music is supposed to sound like on TV today. It was great! And clearly it was Seth MacFarlane insisting on doing the show his way. The full-length main titles sequence with a melody is another thing he must have insisted on.

Spoiler: the story was derivative of The Starlost, "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", and a little bit of "The Return of the Archons." Still, what they did with it was okay.

This was an uncomfortable episode. Way to violent for a comedy/dramedy, what ever it's trying to be. That said it had some of the funniest moments in the series thus far. Approaching the cabin and the eating scene. Again nothing really unique here, but I laughed out loud several times. Nice music too, though the temp tracking is getting a bit annoying.

My wife and I are enjoying the show, and it is showing steady improvement. LOVE the music.

I think as long as McFarlane takes things serious enough, and tones down the frat boy humor, we'll keep watching. Favorite character so far is Alara.

Even with all the make-up she's a cutie.

But that means an outright knockoff of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Orville is already closer to TNG than I Dream of Jeannie was to Bewitched. They're too close for comfort when they should be perfect strangers.

The series is a hot mess. He should've created an original sci fi series, make it generally serious, but keep the biting humor. It could have the clean esthetics of Star Trek, without being Star Trek. That would've been really unique.

WTF? I thought you liked this show, Soliee, ol' buddy? You mean this thread is just yet another masturbatory excercise in vacuous FSM message board discussion again?!!!!

Oh, I'd be depressed -- if I wasn't laughing so hard.

I've always said the show needs to find itself. I also said I really like Seth McFarlane in the lead role, which is the reason I keep watching. I get enough amusement out of it, at least for now...

The latest episode, "Pria" had some wonderful model shots of the Orville. Nice flybys, zoom-ins and beauty shots. Just another way Oville gets Star Trek. The ship is another character in the series, just like the Enterprise was in the original series.

Spoiler:
The amputation prank was hilarious! big grin
(Only because no real harm was done.)
