How?

Opinion, that's how.

To be a masterpiece there has to be concerted opinion from a majority, and reasons given.

Unfortunately, Wind River did not garner a large audience, so it will be ignored. Renner was great.

Let's hope Sam Rockwell (and Francis and Woody) get nominated for their acting in Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.

What are your Oscar predictions for any category? I think DUNKIRK will get a Best Picture nomination.

I don't follow many new films, if any at tall some years, nothing much this year springs to mind, Yeah, Dunkirk, easy winner.

No way. No "diversity" in the cast. Just a lot of white guys. Plus, it lacks a "strong, powerful, independent" woman in a major role>
smile

I was kinda joking when i posted this.but...
I.just heard a CBC talk host.complain about " no people of color or Canadians "
and accusing Nolan of "rewriting history " !

Dunkirk was well-made & mostly stuck to known-facts.

A film that shows horrors of war is all to necessary, but not every film has to have that purpose just because platoon, Saving Private Ryan were so great & ground breaking in their portrayal of war doesn't mean that every subsequent war film has to copy it in terms of violence & drama.

Dunkirk is possibly the most original WWII combat film in the last 20 years.

Nolan reconditioned at least four real battleships that you see in the film as well as six or seven planes, three of which were real Spitfires, & Nolan also employed six thousand extras, that already gives the film high production values.

In-addition the mole/pier seen in the film was rebuilt from scratch to look like the original used in 1940, & it had to be rebuilt a few times because of bad weather.

Nolan could have accomplished all of this with CGI, it was his main objective not to, this film was made to re-enact the experiences of operation Dynamo with all realism possible.

The style alone with which Dunkirk was made makes it a work of art, its sets, props, & locations make it a beautiful to look at.

The Cinematography is one of the best things about the film , it is used to its greatest effect in dog-fights, high-lights of the film were the Spitfires, because Nolan decided to use a Jaws effect by not showing Germans, the super marines (spitfires) Messerschmitts, & Junckers are primary vehicles for battle action.

If it doesn't win best picture, robbery.

I'm not sure what Nolan was trying to achieve with Dunkirk. The real event highlighted how far the nation had descended from it's once lofty perch. The country never recovered from thence. Without US industrial and military might coming in on the Allied left who's to say what might have resulted? At least Nolan's film (still haven't seen it) emphasized a critical moment in history most, if not all, have become rather blase about. Remember what happened to Carthage and Constantinople?

Entertainment Weekly named it best.of.2017. They got that right!
Btw
I am always surprised too read comments like Andy Dursin's that the film is "uninvolving" .
The audience I saw it with was totally mesmerized. I dont think a single patron got out of their seat for the entire running time (noone even checked their mobile phone!!!!!).

Cox as Churchill is good. Churchill sometimes speaks quite softly threw the movie as he did at the tee-tee meeting with George VI, but Cox has his moments being outspoken especially with Eisenhower & in parliament, very moody, & some-what hunched, a-bit, good performance though.

As the Movie opens we're reminded of 1944 & we see Churchill walking the beach, thinking back to the horror's of WWI amphibian attack that went horribly wrong.

Churchill's fear is history that could repeat itself & the English channel could run red with even more blood shed, that will wreck a country & innocent soldiers.

Miranda Richardson is a good actress almost unrecognisable as Churchill's wife Clementine, she come across as a calm yet powerful woman, one that the great man is a little afraid of.

Good cast, script, decent chance of an Oscar

My Oscar prediction? That the most sappy, preachy, and Politically Correct film will win Best Picture.

Joan, I think you're right about Wind River. Too bad. And I hope you're right about Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri--the other best film I saw this year.

The unbloodiest sport of them all, now controlled by the predominantly Portia Effect?

Thanks, mgh. We are twins!!

While I loved Francis and Woody in Three Billboards, the most unique character I've seen in movies was Sam Rockwell's character. You hate him for a long time and then gradually start to care for his man. His child-like naiveté was hard to resist, and Rockwell did a beautiful job with this character.

Yes, we really must be twins. Like you I find Rockwell's character absolutely unique. He starts out being the villain and then becomes the hero of the movie. I had tears in my eyes when I realized what he was trying to do in the bar when he took a beating from the guy in the truck.

I had tears in my eyes during that scene too. If my folks were still alive, I'd ask them WHY they gave you away when we were born. We could have had so much fun going to westerns!!
