I watched the film in a movie theater back then. It's a flawed family-oriented film but it has its moments. Story-wise, it has a lot of loose ends, short cuts and plot holes. I like the western structure of the film: it's basically a stage coach and travel film that is paired with a biblical subtext. Two scenes that I enjoy: the deserted town filled with cockroaches and the weird hillbillies of the gas station.

It could be there was a substantial amount trimmed from the first part of the film. When the novel was re-published with the release of the film, it had a section with photos from the film, and there were several shots of Hamilton in the Control Room, looking rumpled and drunk, so it had to be post-Apocalypse. No one's ever talked about lost scenes from the film, not even the producer in his commentary on the disc release. So, who knows -- maybe, if they still exist, they could make the film a better watch. Or not...
