Found this interesting definition on the Internet. How do you define feminism? Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal, and social equality of sexes. And Alan Alda would support such movements? That means he probably supports equal opportunities for people of color, for people belonging of various religions, and for people regardless of their sexual orientation. Well, I think I kind of like him.

Oh, so feminism is all about the equality of opportunity--not equality of outcome--for each and every individual, regardless of their group identity? In that case, I'm all for it. metoo!

I don't think so Jim. For decades, men were doctors. Equal opportunity means that women can also become doctors. You know this. However, both men and women must pass certain tests to be admitted into medical schools. If some women can't pass those tests, then they should not be admitted. Same with men. For decades, men were never seen as nurses. Male nurses now abound in my area, and I'm glad they have the same opportunity as women to become nurses. I fully expect that both male and female nurses have done well in their course work before they are licensed. Women can be police officers now; however, they, like men, must pass certain academic and physical tests. Both men and women should have that opportunity, and both should pass tests before becoming police officers. Obviously, one of the most rigorous physicals tests are those for becoming a fireman. (At least I didn't say fire person.) In our area, I'd say about 97% of our firemen are men. There are a few women, but there were women who could not pass the physical test; therefore, they should not be firemen, and they are not. I know a few young men who also couldn't pass that rigorous physical test, and they had to find another profession. However, both men and women were provided the opportunity to apply. Decades ago men and women who were gay were often fired from the teaching profession even if they were fine teachers. Gay people now have the opportunity to teach without their sexual orientation being a factor. (Well, certain religious private schools may have a different standard.) You know what I'm saying. Give men and women the opportunity to become electricians or physicists or plumbers, or lawyers, etc. Hold both genders to the required standards for any profession; also, in any profession, hold men and women accountable for their job performances. Is this all the radical for our fathers and mothers and brothers and sister and sons and daughters? I don't think so.

If I thought we agreed based upon your remarks, I wouldn't have responded at all. Which remarks would those be? [. Where have I ever written that we should exclude women and minorities from any profession? On this board?
