Harlan Ellison wrote a very witty and concise essay about the superiority of Hydrox cookies over Oreos back in the 1980's, and I'm damned If I can remember which of his books it's in. More to come....

It was a column from his book, "An Edge in My Voice, " and it was hilarious.

If anyone knows of a source for Hydrox cookies in the Portland, OR area, I'd like to try them again.

I've never tried a Hydrox Cookie, or a Zero candy bar for that matter, as I don't even recall ever seeing either one of them in my local grocery store. I'll continue to keep a lookout though...

I loved Zero candy bars back in the 1950s. Now they're made by Hershey, but I've never seen them in any stores.

Check Cracker Barrel. They have all kinds of vintage candies. Including another of my favorites, Bonomo's Turkish Taffy.

When I was a kid/teen, the dentist I had at the time owned a dog named "Hydrox". When he told me it was a brand of cookie, I became very curious what they tasted like, but I still have not found the elusive Oreo-like snack. My search continues.

AWESOME! Fun thread memories too! I don't work for that company any more but I'm still wildly drawn to Sunshine crackers and Keebler cookies to this day. I will definitely be getting some Hydrox when they come back.

That's odd. I can still find Zero bars at our local gas station, QuickTrip. Practically any QuickTrip I've been to have had Zeroes. Occasionally I'll treat myself to a big one and eat it throughout the week.

I have some fond memories eating Zero candy bars while fishing during the Summers while growing up. I can still often taste them in my memories. big grin

I have seen Zero bars in stores in South Carolina when I'm there on my annual December trek for the holidays. Folks here in California don't seem to be acquainted with them

Amazon.com does sell them, however, and I have ordered a carton of them. The shipping is a tad pricey, but they are sent with dry ice in special packaging.

Candies I miss the most:

Butternut candy bars
Kraft gold-foil-wrapped Fudgies

I've never had them. I don't recall ever seeing them either.

It seems, while I'm thinking about i9t, every time I LIKE a product, they stop making it, especially peanut butter products. Off the top of my head:

  • Planters PB Crisps (flakey shell creamy peanut butter goodness)
  • Skippy peanut butter flavored Fiddle Faddle.
  • Sonic Sour Creame Doritos.
  • Keebler peanut butter creame cookies.
  • Keebler Butterfinger creame cookies.
  • Keebler smores creame cookies.
  • I don't recall the brand name or exact product name, but there was this Skippy peanut butter covered (with creame in it) granola bars that were super awesome.
  • 3D Doritos.
  • I don't recall the brand name, but there are these graham crackers with various flavored creames in them, like strawberry, banana, smores, etc. for sale. they made a good peanut butter one, which all the stores stopped carrying a few weeks ago.
  • About a year or so ago I discovered Fun Sweets made this delicious tropical punch flavored contton candy. A year later they decided to stop selling it.
  • This delicious sugar free WalMart brand (though it doesn't say it anywhere on the bottle except in real small on the back) orange soda. About ay ear after discovering it, they stopped selling it. I don't know if it's discontinued, but it's gone. It was the only good tasting sugar free orange soda I had found.
  • And finally Reese peanut butter flavored Whoppers. I had assumed they stopped making them, then a couple years ago I found them at WalGreens -- no place else was selling them except that chain. I thought I was set, then about a month ago WalGreen stopped carrying it, now there's no place to buy them. An e-mail to the Whoppers people, was about as useless as playing Pick-Up Sticks with my buttcheeks.
I remember a year or two before they started making those Whoppers, I had sent in a suggestion to make Skippy peanut butter flavored ones, and low & behold they delivered Reese Whoopers. I guess I was listened to that first time.

As a kid I always saw HYDROX COOKIES on the table, it was my father's favorite cookie, I could never fine any one of that type as good since. Glad it will be back.
