JOHN McMASTERS:

Thanks for the update. I'm looking forward to the Blu-ray version. The last time I saw GORGO was on tv in 1966.
Yesterday, I ordered a model of Rodan from the original movie and a model of a Mogera from THE MYSTERIANS. I saw both movies when they were in the theater in the 1950s.
Hopefully, one of the Japanese toy companies will release a Gorgo model.

Nice to see people so excited about a Eugene lourie film.years ago i did a 100 pg thesis on Eugene Lourie's 3 big monster pics, this one. beast from 20, ooo fathoms, the giant behemoth. You see it's coming for you, you hoping someone will stop it from reaching you but everyone between you and the menace is failing to stop it, it's getting closer, closer, closer, the suspense , the scary aticapation,, the failure, then the ultimate chaos. EUGENE LOURIE, THE MASTER. no one ever did it better, with all the money the effects, i really wonder if anyone ever will, you see it is because it is all about the subtle state of mind[blair witch project] bigger does not mean better.it is all about the simple quiet moments of our lives, our desires, our fears, our needs, our will to survive in this existence that was given to us.

And let's not forget Angelo Francesco Lavagino's wonderful score. I have the MMM release of the Gorgo music, and tracks 27 "Restless sea/ Underwater/ Tidal wave", 31 but most of all "Making a plan/ Ocean voyage" and king of the lot track 28 "On the island/ inner room" are wonderful.

Tracks 31 and 28 have a great melodic melancholic sound. I haven't seen "The Gorgo" yet and I assume the scenes the music belongs to are completely different but for now it gives me visions of great wonder and joyous mystery.

Quote from a NEW YORK TIMES movie critic back when the film was first release, nothing like it since KING KONG-33, Try lighting a cigarette during the last 20 minutes.

Here are some full reviews of the Bluray:

I'm also still awaiting my copy. It will be a huge disappointment if the transfer overall sucks.

Here's a thread at Monster Kid Classic Horror Forum in which one person posted pictures taken of the bluray as it was showing on his TV.

I am glad you feel better but believe me after watching this movie you are not really suppose to feel better, that's the charm of it. The most exhausting 75 minutes of film possibly ever made, that's why it is so good. The editing is an exorcise for anyone's eyes.Great film and then have a good night's sleep.

Those BR screen grabs don't look any better than a DVD screen grab.

Solium, you should understand that all previous releases on home video of "Gorgo" were, to be blunt, rotten -- wisps of pale, washed out color, details lost in contrasty images, and washed out night sequences. Seeing those photos that the guy took of his TV screen was a huge relief to me -- especially the ones with Gorgo on the flat bed truck and framed by the yellow mechanical equipment -- finally some color in the image -- details -- decent contrast levels -- and some depth to the images. It looks like it will be a major upgrade over the previous releases -- fingers still crossed.

@ John McMasters- Thanks for the reply. I had no idea it looked that bad before. Last time I saw Gorgo was on broadcast television like 30 years ago! In fact I thought the film was in B&W! It appears this will be the best possible presentation then.

It could practically serve as a demo disc for video inconsistency; however, it is a million times better than the DVD. Happy to be seeing so much color!

Years ago when the film was shown on local TV, it almost look like a b/w film, the colors were so weak. However as mention earlier, the revival house print I saw years ago on the big screen was pretty good during the FILM FORUM HORROR SCIFI FANTASY FESTIVAL IN NEW YORK.

I finally received my copy yesterday -- and spent the afternoon watching the film (with popcorn of course!). The transfer is, as so many have noted, wildly variable -- but even in the bad patches the image is colorful with detail. Many sections look absolutely lovely and gorgogeous.

I did A - B comparisons using my two Blu players and a previous VCI DVD release and a Japanese DVD import release. The before and after is dramatic -- but in the back of my mind, in the film theater that resides in my imagination, there will still be playing at times a perfect "Gorgo" -- one that has not been eclipsed by this bluray. If only better elements could be found!

Still, I am grateful to have a further improved version of this hugely entertaining film. It always put a smile on my face.

TO JOHN MCMASTERS- A Eugene Lourie film puts a smile on your face, I can understand in a certain frame of mind, sure, if you give a bit of what I am seeing I am not seeing, to each one's own , But I always felt seeing a Eugene Lourie film is so different then seeing a Jurassic park, GODZILLA VS MEGALON, OR THE 98 GODZILLA. The whole feel and vibes the film gives off is so different. When I saw first hand what happened on 9/11, looking at the people in frantic shock I saw the 3 Lourie films. Yes he was a war photographer before.

But yes indeed I 100% agree, entertaining indeed. Always will be.
