Good call on WITNESS Chris. He was blessed to work with superstar directors like Lucas and Spielberg AND other more critic-friendly ones like Peter Weir and Alan J Pakula.

Harrison Ford's finest performances IMO are in Presumed Innocent, The Mosquito Coast and Frantic. He is far from a terrible actor.

Well I thought he was terrific in many films – “The Conversation” “The Mosquito Coast” “What Lies Beneath” and many more – as I recall he’s also very good in “Heroes.” Comedy is, as they say, hard. Mr. Ford has caused audiences to roar with laughter and has generated full-throttle, clapping, jump to your feel enthusiasm in so many films – I doubt that a bad actor is actually capable of generating so much laughter and joy.

and what have you starred in recently, dan the man? God, I can't stand this sort of "well you've never starred in/directed/composed a score for" post. Dan, you've never been in a movie so you can't possibly have an opinion about Harrison Ford's "acting" ability. By the same token, every person on this board who isn't a profesional film music composer can't possibly express a view such as "Goldsmith's score for Mr Baseball was terrible" (I'm not incidentally.... but it was ). Well, you know what, Charles, I'm willing to bet that you've never flown a 747 before but if pilot error results in a Jumbo jet crashing into your house I bet you'd have a few things to say about it. But wait!!!! "what long haul heavy weight Boeing aircraft have you piloted recently"????. None? Oh well, you can't express a view about the pilot - just accept it is one of those things while wrapping bandages around your damaged skull (something you might want to consider doing even sans a 747 falling on your head, old chap).

Well this is what I like, nice fun bantering with many just offering there honest opinions, but there are some here who just don't have a sense of humor. Let 'see, I GIVE UP, then telling me what have I been in, . Good men like MR SONES in civilized manner , just disagree with my viewpoints, didn't get upset or attack me. This is what I don't understand about some people, can't people have an opinion without being attacked. I said this once before may I say it again if you think Georges Delerue, and Miklos Rozsa are bad composers, GOD BLESS YOU it's your right. If you think George c Scott and Peter Cushing are terrible actors GOD BLESS YOU. It's your right. LET people live and have free thoughts on anything they choose to. Just don't yell fire in a crowded moviehouse.Yes MR JACK, I know what you mean I too have felt that about Ford.

I just now returned home from my first viewing of 42 (The Jackie Robinson Story). I took my dearest lady, who happens to be a baseball expert (I am far from it). She thought that Harrison Ford captured Branch Rickey perfectly, and had nothing but the highest praise for his performance in the film. On the other hand, I don't know a damn thing about Branch Rickey. I could only assess Ford's performance by comparing Ford to Ford in everything else I've ever seen him in. 42 is a GREAT film! I LOVED it! Harrison's performance is unlike anything he's done previously, and represents a bold new step into senior-citizenhood. He's now the "grizzled character" actor. I thought his performance in 42 was somewhere between a great character portrayal, and a total clown. I'm on the fence here. Each scene represented another challenge for Ford to deliver the kind of goods he has never had to come up with previously. As I said...I'm on the fence. My opinion here is inconclusive. Ford gave it his all, for the first time in a while. It is a valiant attempt at a classic form of character acting, but I found his work to fall just a notch or two short of greatness, and for that I blame the director. Seriously. Ford was WORKING here...truly working his heart out to make this role one of the Great Ones. I believe that he got it 95% right, and the other 5% is flawed by a director who just needed one more take to get it perfect. I believe that 42 may very well represent a new beginning for an actor we've all come to love. I can't wait to see what he does next.

Ford is a product of the school of laconic acting, and that's never been to everyone's taste in the same way that semi-sweet chocolate isn't to everyone's taste. Some people just have to have the simple super-sweetness of milk chocolate, as their palates will never adjust to anything more subtle, sophisticated and, perhaps, satisfying. Hell, there were, and are, those who can't fathom Gary Cooper, who elevated laconic acting to an art.
