Some late heroics from Johnny Damon salvages what could have been a disastrous weekend if we'd dropped two of three to the Orioles.

Philip Hughes sad to say is now pitching about the same as Wang was which leaves a gaping hole in the rotation if neither can effectively fill it.

I don't have a sense that this team is dialed in yet. Hopefully that will change over the course of the next month with A-Rod in the lineup full-time now and maybe that will enable Texiexera to come around.

It's still early, and as much as I'm pleased with the Mets turnaround lately, I want to see more.

The Mets need to keep it up offensively, and as I've said here previously, they need to score more runs for their ace Johan Santana when he pitches.

Santana will keep them in ballgames, and with the Mets now hitting as a group I want to see what they will do the next time he pitches.

It was the exact same situation in the 70's Seaver years, you'd get a great pitching performance from him, and the Mets would fall flat on those days to support the effort offensively.

Granted, the Mets never had the offensive capability in the Seaver years that they do now.
That's why there is no excuse for this 2009 team not to give Santana at the very least 4 or 5 runs to work with when he is on the mound.

He'll take care of the rest.

Of course, the Mets saved their worst offensive performance during their winning streak for the night Johan Santana pitches.

Another loss that Santana did not deserve.

Santana was charged with two unearned runs tonight before his departure, but the Mets could not break through against the Braves ace Derek Lowe who as I've said previously here the Mets should have signed instead of Oliver Perez this off season.

Just what was he thinking? Take Santana out of the game? whaaaaat? This is so frustrating.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel is a difficult guy to understand sometimes.

He's got this thing going with the press after every game where he never loses his cool, and he's a broken record after every game in press conferences because he basically says the same thing over and over again win or lose with that laid back delivery.

The press eats it up, and are set back on their heels when he flashes a smile every now and then and goes about his business. Always with a twinkle in his eye.

"Well, we did a lot of good things tonight..some positive things..annnd, there are some things we need to work on.. but overall, I believe that the things we are doing right outweigh the things we need to work on.."

It's always this zen type stuff in press interviews, and I like Jerry, he's a very personable guy, but I'd like to see more of the fire he showed on the field when he got thrown out of the ballgame and was suspended for one game a few days ago for making brief contact with his cap against an umpire that he disagreed with.

Manuel obviously has some fire inside but you'll never see it during the post game press conferences.

Do I agree with all his moves so far?

Absolutely not, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for at least this season.

He is a former manager of the year while in Chicago managing the White Sox, and he has had the Mets playing a whole lot better lately.

Bad night for the Yankees last night, doing better so far tonight but no guarantee of anything. This team sadly fails to inspire confidence yet but I'm not hitting the panic button. I will though if I don't start seeing some bullpen consistency *and* some signs that either Wang or Hughes can start stabilizing the rotation a bit more.

I have to admit it can be really frustrating when you know you've assembled all the theoretical elements of a good team and then when they stumble out of the gate, waiting for things to get better can become maddening. Ideally, this *should* be the group that can get things done but for some reason it just never clicks. A team that goes in knowing its deficiencies can handle losing so much better.

Well, three straight walk-off wins is pretty impressive. According to YES, the last time that had been accomplished was in August 1972 (not a good Yankee season though).

I also get the feeling the whole A-Rod book thing has misfired as a big story because of the greater attention Ramirez generated. Plus, the fact that Ramirez ends up with problems in the end makes Selena Roberts look more like a money-grubbing A-Rod chaser than an honest journalist who should have been investigating the matter of *every* name on the list A-Rod was on. That doesn't lessen A-Rod's own sliminess, but literally the timing of the whole Ramirez flap was the best possible thing that could have happened for him when he came back.

OK so the Tigers absolutely crushed the Oakland A's this weekend. Who said Comerica was a pitcher's park? smile Now if we could just smash the Twinkies a few times.

The saga of the New York Mets continues..

The Mets lost an extra innings game they should have won last night in Los Angeles because of some more mental blunders.

Ryan Church has been in the big leagues long enough now to know that he has to touch third base with his foot when he is rounding the base attempting to score.

He missed the base.

One thing is for sure, Jerry Manuel does not like Church for whatever reasons, and I'm sure it's mutual. Manuel stared him down when he came into the dugout afterwards, and then promptly turned his back on him.
Manuel did not even go out to argue the call with the third base umpire after Church was called out for missing the base to defend his player, so what does that tell you?

When the manager refers to his player in a press conference after a game as "the guy", as in "the guy missed third base", you know all is not well behind the scenes.

The Mets had K-Rod waiting to close, and the run that the Mets thought they had to pull into the lead was rendered null and void because of Church's brain fart.

We'll see how this progresses, but right now the Mets have lost power threat Delgado to a hip injury, and who knows when or if he'll be back this season.

He's also in the last year of his contract, and is 37 years old.

The Mets are pure and simple going to have to make a trade for a first baseman, and the most likely name bandied about has been Nick Johnson.

Minaya better start making some phone calls to some other GM's soon, because the starting lineup as now constituted is not going to fly for the rest of the season.

Go Tigers. Verlander pitched great again for the most part. The Tigers are at 5 wins in a row now. Even Dontrelle Willis pitched great last night.

You mean, Yankee wins? That is good.

I watched the highlights of Dontrelle's performance on the various sports networks.

Best of luck to him in his comeback.

It is very good news for the Tigers and their fans if he can get back to being the dominant pitcher that he was back in his Florida Marlins years.

This is true, and the Tiger's still have a fellow named Bonderman who is working himeslf back from injury, if he regains his old form, other teams are in trouble.

Make that 7 now for Detroit. Although Zumiya almost blew it. Inge goes long again, 12th of the year.

Johan Santana once again showed tonight in Boston why he is an ACE and a leader for the New York Mets.

The Mets limped into Boston after losing a series in Los Angeles.

Santana kept the Mets in the game even on a night when he did not have his best stuff. And he growled back at the Boston hitters who were frustrated at not being able to break through against him.

Santana was masterful as usual at mixing up his pitches against a powerful Red Sox lineup.

He kept the Mets in the game into the late innings, and the offense finally gave him some runs to work with.

I have said it before here and I'll say it again, I love to watch Johan Santana pitch.
He battles through even when he makes some mistakes. He adjusts and keeps his composure.

He is a throwback to a time in baseball when great pitchers cared about winning, and would do anything to help their team win.

Johan Santana is a two time Cy Young Award winner. And it's no surprise why.
When he was in Minnesota I saw him him pitch very rarely.

Now that he's a Met, and I can watch him closely on a regular basis, I can clearly see why he is the best pitcher in baseball.

The Mets will have their hands full with Boston at Fenway Park for the rest of this weekend series, but tonight was a special night.

Johan Santana pitched and the Mets won the game.

Hey Eric,

The Mets helped the Yankees out tonight in the standings by beating Boston, and you guys stuck it to us tonight by not beating Philly.

What's up with this? big grin wink

Oh well can't win 'em all. It was exciting but the Tigers lost it, although they threatened in the 9th inning. Time to start another 7 game win streak this afternoon.
