Nearly forty years after it was released, on a whim, I finally bought Kate Bush's debut album, The Kick Inside, quite brilliant. I might start buying the others now.

I envy you, just making such a discovery. Her early phase (my favourite) runs up to 1982’s The Dreaming, gets a little more sophisticated through the brilliant Hounds of Love, and then her grown-up phase starts, which I still enjoy but it doesn’t have that electrifying sense of wonder that the early LPs had in spades.

As a kid, I got all of my dad's cassettes (which he had taped from various LPs that he had borrowed). One of them (or actually just one SIDE of a cassette) was THE KICK INSIDE by Kate Bush. I remember thinking it was absolutely dreadful -- her whiney voice modulating all over the place. So I rarely played it. However, in old age I've come to appreciate and even like her more. Oh, the follies of youth.

The funny thing is, I heard the breakout single, Wuthering Heights before most other people. I was a colour grader in film lab & we used to get lots of pop promos in then, so we got one job in to do just called Kate Bush, it's Kate walking around in a forest singing the single, so I graded it, knocked off a mute print, tweaked the grading & by then we had the optical sound in, so the next print was a sound print. I looked at it & thought, wow! I got the department in for a view & everyone loved it, & a couple of us tried to buy the single, but the only name we had was Kate Bush, so it was go to a record shop & ask, can I have a single called Kate Bush please? And of course no one had heard of it, a few weeks later the single came out & everyone knew who she was.

Let’s get this straight: the song included the words “Wuthering, Wuthering, Wuthering Heights” in several places, and was clearly based on the eponymous book, and you thought it was called Kate Bush?! smile I suppose you were breathing in a lot of processing chemicals at the time.

...it's Kate walking around in a forest singing the single...

That would be the video created for the American release of the single.
At first I thought you were referring to the clip from the Efteling Gardens special, but that one is staged at night and has a HUGELY gothic tone.

Those first few albums are scary good.
I freely admit that even after listening to them for 40 years I remain totally entranced by them.
