New Doctor Who, Matt Smith, has been praised by the Harris Tweed Authority for his costume choice. Chairman Domhnall Martainn described the actor's tweed jacket as an important and sensible decision. He hoped young people will be inspired to buy clothing made from the traditional Hebridean cloth. Andrew Groves, course director for fashion at the University of Westminster, told the BBC that the outfit was unflattering. Scottish actor David Tennant has passed the Doctor's sonic screwdriver to Smith for the new series of the science fiction show. For an online feature exploring Smith's selection, Mr Groves said: "Whilst David Tennant's Doctor was undoubtedly influenced by Britpop and [the film] Quadrophenia, this Doctor seems to be influenced by Indiana Jones' geekier nephew." However, Mr Martainn was full of praise. He said: "I'd like to congratulate the new Doctor, Matt Smith. He has made a very important and sensible decision. "We think it'll take the image of Harris Tweed to a new level, when you think that there are millions of people who follow this programme." Mr Martainn added: "There's no way the Harris Tweed industry could have bought publicity like this. "There's no doubt that young people watch this programme. Anything that someone like Doctor Who uses, we hope it will set an example and that young people will go out and buy Harris Tweed clothes." Doctor Who's latest assistant Karen Gillan is from Inverness. The 21-year-old will appear alongside Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year. Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/highlands_and_islands/8161643.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8160710.stm

BBC America to air Who uncut, and quicker It's bad enough that Americans have to wait a few weeks or months to watch Doctor Who episodes on BBC America after they've aired in the United Kingdom on BBC One, but we also have to endure edited versions: Though the show fills an hour in the U.K., it have to be cut by at least 15 minutes to accommodate commercials here. Well, no more. Garth Ancier, president of BBC America, announced Wednesday that BBC America will air unedited versions of Doctor Who and other series. The shows will still have commercials: They'll just exceed an hour all told. That's only for the premiere airing, of course. "In order to keep the storylines intact on most of these shows now, on the premiere airing we don't do any cutting at all," Ancier said in a press conference in Pasadena, Calif., as part of the Television Critics Association's summer press tour. "We just take the entire show, and we run over off the clock. That's what we've been doing, and that's what we're going to do for Doctor Who going forward. The audience seems to be following it, and that way we're not screwing up someone's vision, what they're trying to do, or screwing up story points." Doctor Who producer Russell T Davies thanked Ancier for respecting the BBC run times, adding that David Tennant's final episode, "The End of Time," will push the schedule even further. "Actually, our very last episode, coming at Christmas, David's very last episode, is one hour and 15 minutes long," Davies revealed in the press conference. That means with commercials, "Time" will require at least a 90-minute block. "At least an hour and a half, maybe [two]," Ancier replied. "It's great. We run off the clock. It's what the audience wants to see. We actually get complaints if we don't. They know the U.K. episodes somehow, and they don't like it when we take any of it out." (What, is Ancier suggesting that avid U.S. fans aren't waiting for the BBC America to air the show, but rather are bittorrenting the British episodes right off the Internet immediately after they air in the U.K.? Who would do such a thing?) Expect BBC America airings to debut closer to BBC U.K. airings, too. Contractually, BBC America has to run after the U.K., but with schedules locked in in advance, they are able to schedule close enough to get the Christmas special around Christmas or New Year's Day. "Doctor Who Christmas and New Year specials are such iconic things, they're locked on the schedule very early," Ancier said. "That allows us to put it on pretty quickly." http://scifiwire.com/2009/07/bbc-america-to-air-who-un.php

Well, here it is. The New Doctor Who Logo The BBC have unveiled the new Doctor Who logo. The official Doctor Who website this morning offered an exclusive first look at the new Doctor Who logo, which will accompany Matt Smith's on-screen debut as The Doctor in spring 2010. Accompanying the logo at bbc.c.uk/doctorwho is an animated insignia of the show's initials, which will be used as branding for the new series in conjunction with the logo. Steven Moffat, the new Lead Writer and Executive Producer, said: "A new logo. The 11th logo for the 11th Doctor – those grand old words, Doctor Who, suddenly looking newer than ever. "And, look at that, something really new – an insignia! DW in TARDIS form! Simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle. "I apologise to school notebooks everywhere, because in 2010 that's what they're going to be wearing." The new series of Doctor Who will premiere in spring 2010. http://www.drwho-online.co.uk/news/Default.aspx#newseries-new-logo

I think I like the new logo more than the 05 one. But nothing beats 1980 neon or the 73 Diamond!
