New Doctor Who, Matt Smith, has been praised by the Harris Tweed Authority for his costume choice.

Chairman Domhnall Martainn described the actor's tweed jacket as an important and sensible decision.

He hoped young people will be inspired to buy clothing made from the traditional Hebridean cloth.

Andrew Groves, course director for fashion at the University of Westminster, told the BBC that the outfit was unflattering.

Scottish actor David Tennant has passed the Doctor's sonic screwdriver to Smith for the new series of the science fiction show.

For an online feature exploring Smith's selection, Mr Groves said: "Whilst David Tennant's Doctor was undoubtedly influenced by Britpop and [the film] Quadrophenia, this Doctor seems to be influenced by Indiana Jones' geekier nephew."

However, Mr Martainn was full of praise.

He said: "I'd like to congratulate the new Doctor, Matt Smith. He has made a very important and sensible decision.

"We think it'll take the image of Harris Tweed to a new level, when you think that there are millions of people who follow this programme."

Mr Martainn added: "There's no way the Harris Tweed industry could have bought publicity like this.

"There's no doubt that young people watch this programme. Anything that someone like Doctor Who uses, we hope it will set an example and that young people will go out and buy Harris Tweed clothes."

Doctor Who's latest assistant Karen Gillan is from Inverness.

The 21-year-old will appear alongside Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.

Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.

This was a great panel to attend. The two rumors shot down at the start is there won't be a Doctor Who feature film, and Tennant said, "apparently I'm supposed to be in The Hobbit?"

BBC America to air Who uncut, and quicker

It's bad enough that Americans have to wait a few weeks or months to watch Doctor Who episodes on BBC America after they've aired in the United Kingdom on BBC One, but we also have to endure edited versions: Though the show fills an hour in the U.K., it have to be cut by at least 15 minutes to accommodate commercials here.

Well, no more.

Garth Ancier, president of BBC America, announced Wednesday that BBC America will air unedited versions of Doctor Who and other series. The shows will still have commercials: They'll just exceed an hour all told. That's only for the premiere airing, of course.

"In order to keep the storylines intact on most of these shows now, on the premiere airing we don't do any cutting at all," Ancier said in a press conference in Pasadena, Calif., as part of the Television Critics Association's summer press tour. "We just take the entire show, and we run over off the clock. That's what we've been doing, and that's what we're going to do for Doctor Who going forward. The audience seems to be following it, and that way we're not screwing up someone's vision, what they're trying to do, or screwing up story points."

Doctor Who producer Russell T Davies thanked Ancier for respecting the BBC run times, adding that David Tennant's final episode, "The End of Time," will push the schedule even further. "Actually, our very last episode, coming at Christmas, David's very last episode, is one hour and 15 minutes long," Davies revealed in the press conference.

That means with commercials, "Time" will require at least a 90-minute block. "At least an hour and a half, maybe [two]," Ancier replied. "It's great. We run off the clock. It's what the audience wants to see. We actually get complaints if we don't. They know the U.K. episodes somehow, and they don't like it when we take any of it out." (What, is Ancier suggesting that avid U.S. fans aren't waiting for the BBC America to air the show, but rather are bittorrenting the British episodes right off the Internet immediately after they air in the U.K.? Who would do such a thing?)

Expect BBC America airings to debut closer to BBC U.K. airings, too. Contractually, BBC America has to run after the U.K., but with schedules locked in in advance, they are able to schedule close enough to get the Christmas special around Christmas or New Year's Day.

"Doctor Who Christmas and New Year specials are such iconic things, they're locked on the schedule very early," Ancier said. "That allows us to put it on pretty quickly."

BBC America picks up 'Who' season five

BBC America has picked up the US rights to air the upcoming fifth season of Doctor Who, it has been announced.

The new run, which sees Matt Smith take over from David Tennant in the lead role, is currently being filmed in Cardiff, Wales.

The thirteen-episode fifth season will air on BBC America and BBC America HD in Q2 2010 shortly after its UK premiere.

The network also confirmed that its recent screening of Torchwood: Children Of Earth reached a cumulative 3.3 million viewers (live + SD) over its broadcast week at the end of July, making it BBC America's most successful ever series. The subsequent broadcast of Doctor Who: Planet Of The Dead brought in 657,000 viewers.

Tennant's final 'Who' day "very charged"

David Harewood has admitted that David Tennant's final day on the set of Doctor Who was "very charged".

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the 43-year-old, who plays Joshua Naismith in the forthcoming Christmas Special, also revealed that he wasn't allowed to read the script containing Tennant's final scene.

Describing the atmosphere on set as Tennant prepared to leave, Harewood said: "I'd say it was very charged - people were in tears. It was the end of a very successful partnership.

"It was obviously David's last outing, and it was also Russell's last outing and Judy Gardner's last outing. So everyone was saying goodbye to what had been a very successful partnership."

Asked about Tennant's final scene as the tenth Doctor, he added: "We only got four pages, so most of us didn't get to see. I think we'll all be checking in on Christmas Day!"

Coming Soon to BBC America (Hopefully November) big grin

"The Waters of Mars"
Written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford
David Tennant returns as The Doctor in The Waters Of Mars, the second of four Doctor Who specials to premiere on BBC AMERICA in 2009 and early 2010. He is joined by his cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet, Adelaide, played by acclaimed British actress Lindsay Duncan (Rome, Under the Tuscan Sun). Adelaide is head of the Mars Base and doesn't take kindly to an uninvited appearance by The Doctor. Peter O'Brien (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Casualty) also guest stars as Ed, Adelaide's second in command. The Waters Of Mars is written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford, directed by Graeme Harper, and executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner.

New Doctor Who Logo revealed tomorrow

The BBC will unveil the New Doctor Who Logo tomorrow at 8:00am.

Doctor Who has engaged and amazed a global audience for over forty years, constantly raising the bar and regenerating to deliver new and compelling adventures. It's all change again in 2010 with Matt Smith playing the Eleventh Doctor, Karen Gillan onboard as companion Amy Pond and a brilliant, brand new logo!

On one level, the logo is the iconic image that represents Doctor Who. But it's much more than that - it becomes an icon that is recognised from Cardiff to California, an emblem of excitement, humour, scary monsters, brave companions and the Doctor! And so the new logo must be stylish, fresh, distinctive and bold. Must be. And will be. See for yourself when the BBC reveal it exclusively, on their site at 8am on Tuesday, 6th October!

Well, here it is.

The New Doctor Who Logo

The BBC have unveiled the new Doctor Who logo.

The official Doctor Who website this morning offered an exclusive first look at the new Doctor Who logo, which will accompany Matt Smith's on-screen debut as The Doctor in spring 2010.

Accompanying the logo at bbc.c.uk/doctorwho is an animated insignia of the show's initials, which will be used as branding for the new series in conjunction with the logo.

Steven Moffat, the new Lead Writer and Executive Producer, said: "A new logo. The 11th logo for the 11th Doctor – those grand old words, Doctor Who, suddenly looking newer than ever.

"And, look at that, something really new – an insignia! DW in TARDIS form! Simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle.

"I apologise to school notebooks everywhere, because in 2010 that's what they're going to be wearing."

The new series of Doctor Who will premiere in spring 2010.

Does anyone know why Tennant is leaving? Did Davies think it was time for a change or was Tennant afraid of being typecast? In any case, I think a mistake has been made. I'll give the new guy a shot by watching one episode. If I don't like it I'm through with Doctor Who.

I never watched the old Doctor Who and didn't start watcing the new one until after Eccleston was gone (although I saw him in reruns). I consider myself more a "David Tennant as Doctor Who" fan and not really a "Doctor Who in general" fan. The show can be kind of corny, and isn't really my prefered flavor of science fiction.

So, what's next for David Tennant? Bigger and better things, or obscurity and regret (at having left the success he knew as Doctor Who behind)?

I think I like the new logo more than the 05 one. But nothing beats 1980 neon or the 73 Diamond!

It's rumoured to be part of the BBC's Children In Need, but I don't know if it has been confirmed. It was mentioned back in the summer, but since then, I haven't heard much. If it happens great. I just hope it doesn't turn out like Dimensions In Time. LOL
