I used to like Rhapsody of Fire and then they got even more cheesy sounding and I lost interest in their previous album. Then I think Luca Turilli is even less interesting because I've never liked his voice. Still, I'm glad you enjoy it and I hope you enjoy Kamelot. I was interested in going to their new tour but I'm not really interested in seeing Nightwish after the last album wasn't really my thing. At least down here in San Diego, they are playing together.

We're only getting Kamelot here in DC. It's one of their 4 (I think) headlining shows in North America as part of their tour with Nightwish.

Also, Luca Turilli doesn't sing on his albums, he only plays guitar and keyboards, so you've never heard his voice. smile

Ohh.. wink

Somehow I thought it sounded like Rhapsody of Fire changed their vocalist on the preview for the new album. Maybe I should give it another listen.

I can't find any good samples to share of the new Kamelot album. The youtube video they posted (official!) was horrible quality and full of artifacts. Needless to say, check it out if you can. The new singer does a great job and dare I say sounds better than Khan. The mastering is also top notch.

New music video off the new Kamelot album. I wasn't sure if he could beat Khan, but I love it.

So a follow up to the stratovarius album. It is out and it is amazing. I actually liked Polaris/Elysium even though they seem to be genuinely hated by a lot of the fans for the big change in style. Still I must admit that they are a bit cheesy at times and some parts drag. Nemesis is miles above those two and full of uplifting tracks. My only complaint is that one of the best cues (Fireborn) is a bonus track on the expensive import version only. It is so good it should be on the main album.

Also, RE: The Firewind Concert
I drove 1.5 hours and sat through 30 minutes of some pagan metal band that really didn't sound very good in order to catch Firewind live in Santa Ana. Got my boyfriend along and dressed up in metal clothes (black leather jacket, Kamelot T-Shirt). The show was totally worth it, and some of the best sounding live music I've heard in a long time. I didn't stay for Turisas because I am not a big fan.

Hopefully we will see some big releases this year to follow up the Stratovarius album but at least we are off to a good start.

Great to hear from you, my friend! smile I can't say I'm a fan of Stratovarius, but I highly respect them for their instrumental skill. Regardless, seeing them in concert truly would be a magnificent event, so thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm with you on Turisas. They're widely regarded as one of the premier Viking/pagan/punk bands of late, but I find their tunes mostly monotone in comparison to bands of similar ilk like Amon Amarth, Falkenbach, Thyrfing, and Oakenshield.

Exactly. They are too simplistic to really be interesting. Their latest album had some draw at first but I lost interest once I realized how basic the songs were. Right now it is likely that the next band I see live will be VAMPS - a Japanese band with HYDE as the main singer. They are punk rock style. I don't know yet where they will be playing on the upcoming tour though.

Also, I removed the Youtube tags from a lot of my posts. This thread was getting overloaded with too many youtube links loading at once.

AWESOME NEWS!!
Kamelot announced their upcoming tour with Delain (I don't know Eklipse). This is going to be much better than the bands they toured with in the past. Really exciting news.

Mastodon - The Hunter

Just bought it. First listen: might be a good album but it sounds brickwalled to Hell to me.

Or is this just what stuff sounds like these days?

Addendum: been viewing the waveform and it's as I suspected: a solid line with no dynamic range whatsoever. Attempting to use EQ to improve it a little.

Yeah, they pretty much have been doing that for a while now. The latest LORD album, Digital Lies is horribly brickwalled worse than the usual. That's why I love Beyond The Bridge's album, they really have dynamics and proper mastering.

Here are four examples. Though the LORD album only appears slightly worse than Firewind, it sounds much worse.

LORD - Digital Lies (2013)

Firewind - Few Against Many (2012)

Kamelot - Silverthorn (2012)

Beyond The Bridge - The Old Man and the Spirit (2012)

I'll bet that sounds as bad as it looks.

I've experimented with EQing to introduce some dynamic range into the Mastodon album. It works - to a degree. The main problem seems to be the guitars staying at maximum volume throughout, leaving no headroom for clear-sounding drums. My attempt to fix this involves taking down the guitar frequencies and leaving the drums alone to shine through more. The tradeoff is that you lose some clarity in the guitar sound.

I shouldn't be doing the work of the damned producer. It's too much work if the music's mediocre anyway. It all started with Death Magnetic, and those songs just aren't good enough to make the effort worthwhile. I also didn't like the sound of Intrada's Masada CD. But that music WAS worth remastering track by track.

I think metal's effectively a closed book for me. I'll continue making my own but it's frozen in time in terms of influences.

Yeah its a shame because the Lord album was something I was really looking forward to. I swear these producers don't know what to do half the time. I've seen worse than that though, where every single track is clipped. I just refuse to buy an album if the mastering is completely horrible. I need to get in touch with these guys from LORD though and tell them that the poor mastering is why I'm not buying it.

So I don't really want to make a new thread for my favorite hard rock stuff so I will just post it here and hope nobody will notice wink

New song from The Poodles, Swedish band that started out as glam rock (really bad IMO) and then their previous album was amazing and totally different style. It seems they will be continuing with the hard rock sound with the new album.
