So this skyy38 chap won the weekend laptop lottery at the local looney bin.

We would all appreciate it if you'd delete the FSM message board bookmark before you turn it over to the doctors tomorrow.

Oh yeah-FILM SCORE MONTHLY!!!! You need to add a "draft save" feature to these boards , because the "time-out" happens too fast an I lose a LOT of good posts!!!!!

For long posts, I prepare them in Word or Notepad, and then copy and paste them onto the board.

When I first saw THE GAUNTLET in the theater, I too thought it was over-the-top and unrealistic, and I avoided it thereafter. But two years ago I watched it on video, and found to my surprise that I liked it a lot better than I did when it was new. Perhaps 30 years of increasingly overblown action films have made THE GAUNTLET look more reasonable in comparison.

Zippy - felicitations, old boy! Hope all's well. Less lurking, more posting, if you please.

Yes, zip. And that loony bin/laptop line was funny.

Maybe its me but you do wonder that if someone spends and hour and a quarter late on a saturday replying to every post in a thread - mostly with the word BULLSHIT - that either they just got in from the bar or maybe its medication time????

"....If Mr McMurphy doesn't want to take his medication orally, I'm sure we can arrange that he can have it some other way. But I don't think that he would like it..."

I used to post here drunk back in the early 2000's.

Reading what I said the next day was more painful than any hangover.

Darn it, I have to disagree with my friends Bruce, Mike and Mitch.

I really like this film, despite its preposterousness throughout. Probably the best part is Jerry's Enforcerish score, but it's more fun than at least the last two Dirty Harrys. Where I differ from Mike is in thinking that it's not really a Dirty Harry type film - more like a grubbier Coogan's Bluff.

One part of the film is pretty intense, and in fact surprised me with its brutality when I saw it in the cinema - that particular bluray chapter could be entitled "Box Car Willy".

Overall, I'd happily spring for this at a budget price.

And yes, marvellous artwork.

TG

Well, much as I always love to agree with my tall English friend, I felt a bit differently.

A common thread that links GAUNTLET in awfulness to at least one of the last two DIRTY HARRY films is the shared presence of Eastwood's erstwhile slut, his answer to the lifeless acting of Dolores Taylor in BILLY JACK, one Sondra Locke. Funny, I liked her initial performance, in THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, but somewhere after that I guess she just decided to be awful. Happily for her, Eastwood apparently was not looking for screen talent as much as other things at the time they connected. I doubt however that even a female co-star with talent could have saved THE GAUNTLET from its own silly story and dialogue. In case you're wondering, no, I didn't particularly love this film. For me, it embodied all of Eastwood's flaws as a moviemaker, score concept included, and few of the things that made some of his films great fun. Just my opinion of course. (Give me THE ENFORCER any day!)

re Sandra Locke:
anyone else notice that she is GANG RAPED (or attempted) in three of Clint's films?

GAUNTLET, WALES* and in Sudden Impact her sister.

was Clint trying to tell us something?

*Nice ass!

I read that one of her cheeks is permanently imploded. Funny, they didn't say which one!

Good call bringing up Dolores Taylor, Dana.

Personally, my choice would be Nancy Allen. She was DePalma's snake wrangler and had Locke's ability to suck all the energy out of any scene while simultaneously delivering dialogue like it was learned moments before the cameras rolled.

They both gave the impression of being entitled to their screen time.
