I have some beers in my fridge, but after drinking heavily for weeks now (both before Cannes, in Cannes and after Cannes), I might want to use the opportunity to tone it down this weekend when I have no invitations to anything. I know there will be lots next week (and weekend) again; with a stag party trip and whatnot. But who knows....I might succumb to temptation. I usually do.

What was it like in Cannes? Is it expensive? Meet many famous types? Tell all...smile

Lots of famous types, but I didn't see any!

This year, I was not really there for the film festival, but as a co-host and moderator of the European Film Music Day on May 22nd. I also took a couple of days off after the event, to see Antibes etc. Yes, Cannes is VERY expensive, which is why I wasn't very comfortable there last year (when I spent a whole two weeks for the festival). But I do wish I had stayed a BIT longer; the same day I left, David Lynch and TWIN PEAKS was on later that evening, and although I didn't have a ticket, I could at the very least have tried to see him on the red carpet.

Here's my report from the event I participated in:

As I've mentioned before in this thread, I am a Fernet Branca devotee and this weekend I am celebrating a personal triumph of sorts with The Bitter.

I was also pleased to see that Michael Caine's Alfred Pennyworth character was One of the Anointed, as he mentions the stuff in The Dark Knight Rises.

A little late to the party, but Fernet Branca is Quiller's favourite drink.

Just came back from a wedding weekend in the Scottish highland (Glen Tanar). Fantastic experience! Mostly beer, but with some local whiskey as well. And sparkling wine.

You were in Scotland? You didn't tell me! What were the local whiskies like? And the beers? What were their names? Have you got any photos? What was the weather like? Did you get attacked by the midgies?

By the way, I actually had to look up where Glen Tanar is. Never been there. I'm more of a West Coast rugged rocky mountain climber and whisky drinker.

Yeah, just a brief trip -- flight to Aberdeen on Friday, hung out and got drunk in a pub crawl, then off to Glen Tanar on Saturday for the wedding. Spectacular estate, with a ballroom decorated with hundreds of animal antlers. Wonderful ceremony ("hand fasting") 3-course dinner, including some whiskey for dessert (brand I do not know) and a steady, free supply of ale and other beers. And champagne. And wine etc. Live band afterwards that played old school rock and pop and Scottish folk music, including local dance routines. Got sloshed again, took the bus back to Aberdeen, and partied at a night club untill 5 in the morning.

Spent five whole hours (damn flight delay) on Sunday, extremely hung over. I'm still hung over. But man...wish I had extended my stay. Wanted to see castles and more of the proper Highlands. Will definitely come back!

Warming up this weekend for my birthday this Tuesday. Phelps finally hits the Big 3-0 wink Bringing some work colleagues to Fort Lauderdale's legendary Mai-Kai for drinks. Mrs. Phelps and I will take in dinner and the show afterwards. My workmates have never been so I'm looking forward to checking out their reactions to the booze and the decor, as well.

Sounds good, Jim. Round numbers are supposed to be celebrated.

I'm taking it VERY easy today, as I'm flying to Haugesund International Film Festival tomorrow (I'm in the FIPRESCI jury). I'm positive there will be plenty of drinks -- mostly of the barley kind -- over the next week.

For my 30th (aka 46th) birthday, a friend bought me a bottle of dark Colombian rum and so I'll be enjoying some of that on this, the final weekend of my summer break before work resumes on Monday.

Cheers!

Colombian rum! Sounds scary.

This week has been insane.

I've just returned from a week at the Norwegian International Film Festival in the west-Norwegian city of Haugesund (where I was in the FIPRESCI jury), and it's been alcohol every single day (some more than others, though). And tonight, there's a 30th anniversary for the institute where I studied and worked. So MORE beer and stuff. No wonder I've grown fat.

When the dust had settled after Hurricane Irma's arrival and departure, I ventured, cash in hand, to my local Irish pub (they advertise themselves as such). I ordered a Guinness on draught and it was mahvelous, darlingk. Mahvelous.

Appreciate the good things, boys; you'll never know when they'll all be taken away.

I've never really acquired the taste for Guinness in all my years of boozing.
It was never thirst quenchy enough for me and has a strange metallic aftertaste to it.
BUT!!!
I'm told you've never really experienced it properly until you've supped a real one in Ireland.
We're going on a little mini cruise from Liverpool to Cobh and Dublin in two weeks, so I'm gonna finally give it a proper go.
To be sure, to be sure wink

I was never a big fan of Guinness or Kilkenny either (or any stout, really). Prefer the lighter stuff. Just returned from Riga yesterday -- more beer binging. So I should really take the next weekend off.

Man, you guys are soft.

Soft, you say? My favourite beers are all around 10% alcohol. Take that, Guiness! wink
