It's now down to 552 copies. Apparently, a particular Soundtrack vendor just bought 100 copies, presumably to wait until after we sell out to offer at an over-inflated eBay price, but through the regular web site.

But hey, what do I care, at least it will sell out and we'll recoup the money for the extra staples that we bought (instead of glue).

Someone just called and offered their 2 extra copies of the expanded Rent- A- Cop cd in a trade for several copies of "Murders".

Needless to say, no deal.

It's now down to 147 copies.

From Gene Loftybeck

Hey Max!

Sorry I didn't get to see you last weekend. We'll do dinner when I get back in town next Thursday. I wanted to pass on some exciting news.

Well, the "Brown Box" is on again. We kind of had to pick up the pieces from where mom left off with it. It seems that as soon as we "lock" the content something always turns up - hence, the rejected ALAN FIVEHOUSE MURDERS CD, which we would have liked to include in the box set as a nice addendum, but we may not be able to. I am still not sure yet. I heard that the CD sold out of its run last week. Anyway, we have a test pressing of the "brown box" in the works which should arrive near the end of the month. If everything is okay with it, we may have it out for the holidays.

I will have the final details of the set to you as soon as we have it back and everything is approved. We were trying to figure out if there was a way to have any of the non-deceased composers sign a limited amount of discs, but calls to several have gone unanswered (In fact, one composer just laughed and hung up the phone after I called). In any case, I can only tell you that the set is probably going to be pretty expensive. Perhaps, it may be the most expensive soundtrack boxed set ever. We set a tentative price at $399, but don't release that information to anyone yet.

Anyway, that's it for now. I will see you next week and we'll talk more about it.

Regards,
G

P.S. We found one of those ALAN FIVEHOUSE masks that Goldsmith made for that original session when Lonsdale joined him at the podium. Some of the paint is a little chipped, but my brother nearly pissed himself!

Thanks for the update Max.

So nice to see that Gene is right on top of things concerning this set.

Max,

Hey. What's up buddy! Wonder if you had a nice Thanksgiving. Ours was not the same without mom, but we enjoyed the turkey and lasagna anyway!

Nothing new to report on the "Brown Box" other than it still has not had final approval yet. It's coming, we can be sure of that!

On a side note, i think you'll find something interesting. Lonsdale's agent called me the other day regarding a concern over an unauthorized biography that someone has written - when I get more information i will forward it to you. Apparently, there's so much revisionist history in it and outright lies (according to Michael) that it sure stir up the pot a little. Again, when I have some information, I will forward it. The book is called I AM FIVEHOUSE, An Unauthorized Biography of Michael Lonsdale, written by Leslie R. Kornplatt. Keep your eyes open for this one. I will try to get you a copy.

Regards,
Gene

I have heard of a writer named Kornplatt, and some of the sources he uses are questionable, but you take his stuff with a grain of salt because he always makes for an interesting read anyway.

He's the Kitty Kelley of his generation.

BTW Max, Nice to hear that Gene is still on top of things concerning the Brown Box.

He did send me a test pressing of the "Unreleased" FIVEHOUSE FIVE scores, which was interesting because there are a number of original "source" cues that show up - some of which were never used in the final show.

JERRY GOLDSMITH on scoring ALAN FIVEHOUSE

"...I often joked on how scoring RAMBO FIRST BLOOD PART II payed for my house...well, ALAN FIVEHOUSE did at least cover a week in Vegas at the TROPICANA.."

Interesting. Any more news on this?

I wonder if these cues are remastered ?

And if so, will they be remastered once again for their inclusion in the remastered Brown Box?

Exciting news Max!!

No more news yet. Gene is on vacation until February 15. From what I understand, all of the original FIVEHOUSE film scores, along with the original CD's to THE FIVEHOUSE FIVE, are completely remastered from the original sessions masters. Should be a revelation.

Now, Gene mentioned something that could be cool. Apparently, ALAN FIVEHOUSE was the FIRST soundtrack to be recorded digitally, beating out THE BLACK HOLE by only a few weeks. the problem is, like THE BLACK HOLE, it was recorded on an early system that was not at a standard sampling rate. As a consequence, the equipment required may no longer exist. However, Gene told me that he may have found a guy in Peoria, illinois that may have the last two mult-track decks that can play the source tape. It is hoped that the masters can be transferred to a modern tape source, then direct to hard disk with Pro-Tools. We'll see. It could be exciting.

The following is a transcript from the August, 1999 edition of the BBC Radio show, Fine Arts in Radio & Television (F.A.R.T.) featuring an interview with Frederick S. Loftybeck, creator of the ALAN FIVEHOUSE saga, to promote season two of THE FIVEHOUSE FIVE. Radio host Stuart Moldow spen sixty minutes speaking with Mr. Loftybeck on the set of THE FIVEHOUSE FIVE.

Stuart Moldow: F.A.R.T welcomes you.

Frederick S. Loftybeck: I’m a regular fan of F.A.R.T.

SM: Really, now? That’s extraordinary.

FSL: F.A.R.T. has been my favorite for years.

SM: Thank you for your kind words.

FSL: Don’t mention it..

SM: So, now you working on Season two of THE FIVEHOUSE FIVE.

FSL: Yes.

SM: How has it been?

FSL: Exhausting. You know, I really didn’t think we were going to make it past Season One. We did 22 shows in something like 18 weeks and it nearly killed us all.

SM: Why was it so exhaustive?

FSL: Well, (Pauses), even though this was television and on a much less budget than any of the features, we had a lot of complicated set-ups and set pieces for many of the episodes that required a great deal of planning. There was much more action and physicalities involved, and we were shooting and editing down to the wire on every show. In addition, I always had to work with various directors in order to play the “middle-man” to the cast.

SM: The cast was difficult to work with?

FSL: No, just one….Lonsdale. Michael and I had been there from the beginning. Twenty years we had been involved with FIVEHOUSE. It was a tempestuous relationship at times, but I really think he did enjoy doing the part. Most of the shenanigans that occurred were really part of the mystique that he wanted to project upon the back-end of the production. He told me one time that it would be great for publicity if there was something else to talk about, but I don’t know. I think he really was oblivious to the drama that he created behind the scenes.

SM: Who is your favorite cast member?

FSL: I really like everyone. David [Thewlis] is really great and quite funny when he needs to be on camera. I enjoy writing for him. I like the subtle sexual tension that is played out between him and Allison’s [Doody] character. Just delightful and funny. Sonya [Walger] and Martin [Freeman] will have much more to do this season, especially after an attempt is made on Alan’s life – which I wont go into too much detail about. I will leave you hanging on that one (laughs).

SM: Is there anything else in store this season?

FSL: Plenty, but I won’t tell you all of it now (Laughs). One important change – and it’s really at the behest of Michael – is that Alan Fivehouse finally is knighted by the queen this season. After twenty years of service, he is rewarded for saving Parliament during the climax of the first movie. We brought back Nicol Williamson – a truly beautiful man and wonderful actor – to reprise his fateful character from the first movie, who has been locked up in prison for almost twenty years. Fivehouse will confront him to help him with a case, which will lead to Williamson’s release.

SM: So, Alan Fivehouse will finally be “Sir Alan Fivehouse?”

FSL: (Laughs) Yes. It was the only way to shut up Michael. Also, I think this was the only way Michael could claim to have been knighted, as he is of French descent – or so I’ve been told (Laughs). It’s been a secret fantasy of his.

SM: Well, not so secret any more.

FSL: (Laughs) No, not by any means.

NEXT: Loftybeck talks about the women of THE FIVEHOUSE FIVE

LUKAS KENDALL on "THE BROWN BOX"

"....I wish them luck, because a lot of people will be scrutinizing THEIR stitching....For that price, they better be including a lifetime supply of "Gorilla Glue."

From Gene Loftybeck:

"Hey Max, been a while since we chatted. My brother and I found some interesting things while visiting the archives of Uncle Freddie's Vermont estate. Apparently, there were unfinisihed screenplays to potentially four more Alan Fivehouse films, as well as five unpublished manuscripts to Fivehouse novels.

Apparently, Uncle Freddy had more to say about Fivehouse.

Regards,
Gene

P.S. We had 10 copies of the "Brown Box" for sale at Comic Con, so it's coming soon.

Gene's was probably the only table not photographed and posted on the "other side" of this forum. LOL!

Word is that the 10 copies went pretty fast and Gene's staff at the Con folded up their tent quickly after that.

I'm looking forward to some photos here of the entire remastered BROWN BOX set which I'm sure are forthcoming.

I've only seen glimpses of the slipcase, and it definately would even meet Michael's[Lonsdale] lofty standards.

More people have read this thread than books, judging on the view counts for both threads....

And I don't blame them, this thread is probably much more interesting than what many of them are reading anyway.

I can't get through half of the threads out there. But there's always something "unexpected" in the world of Fivehouse.

MaxB

Indeed.
