Ambassadors Of Death is a great 4 part story, so it's a pity that there are actually 7 episodes.

It's good though, if a little over extended. Dudley's strange/hypnotic mysterioso music for the aliens is tracked several times throughout the story and really transforms the scenes it's in.

One of my favorite Simpson scores, from one of my favorite Pert episodes. Re-record it, Mister Blair!!!

There can't be too many releases to go, unless they start releasing special editions of all the existing stories. Good news that Spearhead From Space is getting a Blu Ray release.

I'm looking for the last one: "The Mind of Evil" which is scheduled in 2013.
I wish they were a precise release date.

The debut story of Jon Pertwee has been given the high-definition treatment for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary.

Spearhead From Space - Doctor Who's first colour story - is the only adventure from the classic era that can be remastered into true HD say experts because, thanks to industrial action at BBC TV Centre, all four episodes were shot on location on 16mm film rather than being recorded on videotape - the only time this was ever done on the show.

The digital media services team of BBC Studios and Post Production was commissioned by BBC Worldwide to remaster the story, which was first broadcast in January 1970 and also introduced Caroline John as assistant Liz Shaw. The "facelift" has given the story a cinematic finish, and the Blu-ray is now scheduled for release on Monday 15th July 2013.

The original 16mm negatives were scanned and digitised using state-of-the-art equipment, and other work has included repairing damage done to one episode's negative caused by a reaction with chemicals during a printing process some years ago. Dirt has also been removed, grain lessened, joins cleaned up, and picture movement stabilised. The soundtrack, which had previously been remastered, was then added to the final master version.

Jonathan Wood, the team's lead colourist, said:

The look of this HD remaster is a low-key filmic approach, which gives it more of a dramatic result. Working with the original negative and using a powerful, non-linear grading system, we decided to treat this four-part story like an individual filmed drama rather than thinking of it as part of an ongoing series normally shot in a TV studio.

Clive Hodge, the digital media services head, said:

We're delighted to have teamed up with BBC Worldwide to have remastered such an iconic programme for its 50th anniversary. Doctor Who is one of the few series to remain popular through the ages, and it's fantastic that the younger generations will have the chance to see this landmark story in the same picture quality that they've become used to with the more recent series.

I dedicated this exchange to Jim Phelps, a key member of UNIT.

About "Day of the Daleks".

—ME—
Episode 1 of "Days of the Daleks"
Things to notice:
1. At Auderly, a government-owned country house, UN official Sir Reginald Styles
is working in his study when a trooper pops up from nowhere and threatens him
with a raygun and suddenly fades away. Sir Reginald is all shook up by the quick
event.
2. As previously, the Doctor tries to fix his TARDIS console at UNIT HQ, states
his social situation towards his Time Lords people and, by accident, creates a
time crack that makes appear his double and the one of Jo!
3. Jo makes reference to the season 8 serial "Colony in Space"
4. Another trooper pops up nearby the country house and runs to a canal tunnel
when two tall aliens with gorilla faces knock him out
5. In order to secure a peace conference between China and Great Britain, the
Brigadier is ordered by Geneva to visit, investigate and protect Sir Reginald at
his office and secretary Miss Paget introduces the stiff and embarrassed
official who is in denial to UNIT head and the Doctor and Jo
6. The UNIT men locate the unconscious body of the trooper nearby the canal
tunnel and the Doctor discovers his odd equipment
7. At the center of a techno control room (designed by an Italian modernist and
pop artist), an authoritarian man, dressed as the Master but with a silver skin,
is listening to the two alien monsters about their assignment
8. Back at UNIT HQ, the Doctor tests the equipment but when activating the
portable time machine, the unconscious trooper, transported in an ambulance,
vanishes
9. Back at the country house surrounded and controlled by UNIT men, the Doctor
steps into the study of Sir Reginald with a silver platter with good food and
offers to share his diner with nervous Jo
10. The Doctor tastes the red wine like a connoisseur while Jo tries to feed
the troops
11. Out of the blue, three troopers pop up nearby the canal tunnel: two men and
one woman dressed in guerilla combat suits
12. One of them zaps two UNIT soldiers and steps into the study of Sir Reginald
to cut off the portable time machine when the Doctor enters and neutralizes him
13. Back at the techno control room, the man in charge informs his masters about
the situation: the Daleks!

Review: a good introduction to the realm of mystery with a political
backdrop-the peace conference and the meeting with unidentified guerrilla
troopers assassins and the authoritarian silver skin man that is called the
Controller!

Quotes:

2. The Doctor about his independant lifestyle:
"I don't want it to work for them. I want it to work for me. No one's going to
turn me into an interplanetary puppet."

9. The Doctor about Earthling politicians:
"You know, one thing you can be certain of with politicians is whatever their
political ideas, they always keep a well-stocked larder, not to mention the
cellar!"

—A FRIEND—
I feels good to be watching Doctor Who again, and I enjoyed this first episode of season 9 very much. The most interesting aspect of it, so far, is the political backdrop about the peace conference in Geneva going wrong, and the role of Sir Reginald in those negotiations. I understand Jon Pertwee didn't like the Daleks much, and they are just boxes running around in corridors, but I like the beauty of their simple logic. They are like computers, singleminded bend on destroying anything that does not fit with their plans. I also liked the authoritarian man ording soldiers back and forth through time and space. He has an appearance somewhat similar to the Master, but seems to be serving the Daleks agenda rather than his own. It will be interesting to see how the serial develops.

As usual, the small scenes are often more delightful than the bigger aspects of the plot. Doctor Who enjoying a nice meal with wine and cheese is nice, with Jo running around in the background feeding the troops. I also took delight in the line you mention where the Doctor explains his lack of intention of becoming the puppet in somebody else's play. Great beginning. It will be interesting to see what tonights episode will add.

As mentioned earlier this month, the BFI plan to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who with special screenings each month next year in the lead-up to the Anniversary itself; the organisation has now announced details about the first quarter of 2013.

As previously mentioned, the season kicks off at the very beginning with William Hartnell's An Unearthly Child on 12th January; this will be followed on 9th February with Patrick Troughton tackling the Tomb of the Cybermen; then in March Jon Pertwee is up against The Master as The Mind of Evil is unveiled in newly restored colour! All stories are accompanied by a Q&A panel, though guests have yet to be announced.

Now HERE'S a tidbit we somehow overlooked...and for two whole months now! Back on December 4th, we missed the report by our friends at the Doctor Who News website that the only episode of classic Who which could possibly be released on Blu-ray Disc, is in the works for foreign release on that format this summer. No word there of a North American release, but since BBC Home Entertainment tries their best to keep classic Doctor Who releases available worldwide (though often not on the same date, or in the same order), it's reasonable to expect this to hit our shores at some point. Here's a quote of their story:
The debut story of Jon Pertwee has been given the high-definition treatment for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary.

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine - in shops from tomorrow - features an extensive interview with the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, conducted by two young reporters in 1994 and for the most part previously unpublished!

On joining the show, Pertwee said:

I had no preconceptions about the programme when I joined it. I only knew I did not want to be like the Doctors who had gone before. However, the old producers wanted me to play it for laughs, you can see that in the first episode. The hat business. The shower. I had already decided I want to play it straight. Luckily those producers left after the first story and were replaced by Barry Letts who let me play it my way...

Pertwee's memoir, Moon Boots and Dinner Suits, has been reprinted.

In US, on Kindle: http://amzn.to/14ms700

In UK, I think it's also available in actual book form.

I have Pertwee's second book, I Am The Doctor, but never had this one. Looking forward to reading it.

With the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who in full force this year, the folks at BBC Home Entertainment have today announced THREE new DVD releases having to do with the legendary original show. Each of these will be in stores on June 11th, and at the time of this writing we don't have full details on any of them yet. Package art and bonus material are still yet to be announced by the BBC and their distributor, Warner Home Entertainment. We do have these descriptions for you, however, for each of the three titles:

Doctor Who - Story #054: Inferno: Special Edition
"Inferno is a top-secret project that involves drilling down into the crust of the Earth to unleash a new energy source. However, the Doctor, along with his assistant Liz Shaw, is concerned that this drilling will have disastrous consequences for the whole world. His concerns are soon confirmed when the TARDIS throws him into a dangerous parallel universe, where Project Inferno is almost complete and the end of the world is near."

Doctor Who - Story #056: The Mind of Evil
"A machine that drains evil from criminals' minds is the secret weapon in a plan to destroy the Doctor and doom world peace. Includes a bonus clip of the only surviving color footage of this historic 6-part adventure."

Doctor Who - The Doctors Revisited: 1-4
From January through November, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, BBC America is taking the TARDIS back in time once each month with brand-new specials on all eleven Doctors. These consist of documentaries titled "The Doctors Revisited: The First Doctor," etc., plus airings of stories for each Doctor (Story #006: The Aztecs for William Hartnell's 1st Doctor, Story #037: The Tomb Of The Cybermen for Patrick Troughton's 2nd Doctor, Story #051: Spearhead From Space for Jon Pertwee's 3rd Doctor, and Story #082: Pyramids Of Mars for Tom Baker's 4th Doctor). BBC Home Entertainment's DVD release of The Doctors Revisited: 1-4 collects the first four specials.

Please note that the above descriptions for the first two titles are direct quotes from distributor Warner Home Video, while the third title's description was put together by us using information gleaned from various BBC America announcements, plus the story linked above (about which 4th Doctor story will be featured). At this time we don't know if the DVD release for The Doctors Revisited: 1-4 will include the actual stories named (which accompany the broadcasts of the documentary specials), or if the release is of the documentaries only. We only know that it's a 4-disc set, priced at $39.98 SRP. But we'll update you further as more information becomes available.

Regarding the new-to-DVD release of the 3rd Doctor story Doctor Who - Story #056: The Mind of Evil, longtime fans of the program are probably aware that this particular Jon Pertwee story's BBC Archive copy has been in black-and-white, where the (now lost) original color videotape copy had been transferred to a b&w telecine film print. The six-episode story arc was released on VHS in black-and-white in the '90s, with a bonus of some remaining color footage from the sixth episode which had been recorded off-air. Now the Restoration Team has used the Chroma Dot color recovery process to re-colorize episodes 2-6, and hired an expert to manually re-colorize the first episode. Thus, the entire story - which is the last of the 3rd Doctor stories needing to be put out on disc - will be available to fans in color on this 2-DVD release!

Price for The Mind of Evil, and for Inferno: Special Edition, is $34.98 SRP each. Again, this is all early information, and we're not certain how complete or finalized this is. Stay tuned and we'll update you further as the BBC makes their complete details available, along with the packaging.

Yesterday BBC Entertainment announced the June 11th releases of 3 titles related to the classic show:

Doctor Who - Story #054: Inferno: Special Edition (an upgrade from this story's previous DVD release in 2006), Doctor Who - Story #056: The Mind of Evil (new to DVD, and with all six episodes restored to color), and Doctor Who - The Doctors Revisited: 1-4. For the latter, we've confirmed that the 4-disc set meant to celebrate the show's 50th Anniversary will include the new BBC America documentary specials about each Doctor, the classic stories for each of those Doctors that we mentioned in yesterday's write-up, AND a specially recorded introduction to each classic story by current showrunner Steven Moffat! Here now is the official studio description of this title:

Doctor Who - Story #051: Spearhead From Space: Special Edition Blu-ray
$29.98 SRP; the 4-part debut story for the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee), and the first one in color, is the ONLY classic Doctor Who arc which can PROPERLY be released as a high-def Blu-ray Disc, because it was the only one shot on actual film (the rest of the original show, and even the new show up to and including the 10th Doctor Christmas Special "The Next Doctor," were all shot to regular videotape, which is naturally non-HD). As part of the 50th Anniversary celebration, the BBC is releasing Spearhead on Blu!

Doctor Who - Story #069: The Green Death: Special Edition
$34.98 SRP; previously released on DVD in 2005, this 6-part story featuring the 3rd Doctor (Pertwee) was the final appearance of Katy Manning as companion Jo Grant, and is getting a new upgraded DVD release this year.

Episode 1/6 from "The Green Death"
Things to notice:
1. Llanfairfach, South Wales, a sinister and closed down coal mine: worker Hughes runs away from the underground tunnels of the pit
2. A white Land Rover enters the factory called Global Chemicals Research Center surrounded by the local people when chauffeur Hinks stops, comes out and lets his manager appear and he is joined by his executive Elgin
3. Manager Stevens gets up on the tail of the car and makes a public statement to the people about getting wealthy but they doubt
4. Back at the tunnel, the miner rushes to take the freight elevator when we discover his glowing green hand
5. Manager Stevens explains that the government gives him carte blanche to create cheap artificial oil and they all cry with joy except Professor Jones and his four followers who exclaims with rage: "More muck! More devastation! More death!"
6. Manager Stevens fights back and mentions that his venture means "progress" for the people so Professor Jones reacts vividly ("He means fatter profits for Global Chemicals at the expense of your land, the air you breathe and the health of you and your kids! […] Can't you see you're being exploited?") and warns the poor miners who don't agree with Jones because of their incomes
7. Out of the blue, the siren of the coal mine rings so the workers head to the pit where the dead miner lies glowing green
8. At UNIT HQ, Jo is reading the newspaper and eating an apple when the Doctor comes out of the Tardis and carries a piece of machinery that he is repairing
9. The Doctor informs Jo that they are on their way to Metebelis 3 but Jo reacts to an article of the newspaper about Global Chemicals and Professor Jones
10. Jo leaves the workshop to pack his suitcase and refuses to accompany the Doctor to Metebelis 3
11. At the coal mine, a worker and Professor Jones examine the body of the dead man
12. Back at UNIT HQ, the Brigadier asks the Doctor to go to Global Chemicals to investigate but he refuses when Jo pops up and tells the Doctor that she goes straight to South Wales
13. Jo is willing to resign from UNIT but the Brigadier offers her a lift to Llanfairfach
14. The Doctor makes a last attempt to convince Jo to accompany him to Metebelis 3 but Jo is head strong and the Doctor understands her and lets her leave
15. The Doctor is alone, talks to himself, enters the Tardis and fades away
16. The Brigadier drives a white Mercedes sport car and stops near the lorry of a milk man in order to know the way to Global Chemicals and Jo to the Wholeweal Community (alias the Nuthutch)
17. The Brigadier drops Jo at Jones' farm
18. The Tardis materializes on the blue planet, the Doctot comes out and is attacked by a tentacle
19. Jo rings the bell, steps into, inspects the place and its rooms and eventually ends up in the lab of Professor Jones without knowing it which breeds comical situations in which Jones toys with naive Jo
20. Back on the blue planet, the Doctor runs away from screaming animals and faces a sneak
21. Professor Jones pulls the leg of Jo with a crawling insect
22. The Doctor is running away from the sneak while a wild and snowy storm is blowing
23. Professor Jones shows Jo his new hybrid fungus called "Saliota orbis" as an alternate source of food and introduces himself
24. At the office of Global Chemicals, the Brigadier meets manager Stevens and executive Elgin and tells them he is about to investigate on the death of the miner and asks them a telephone
25. On the blue planet, the Doctor comes near a nest
26. At the empty UNIT HQ, the phone rings and rings again and again
27. The Doctor extends his arm to get a blue sapphire when he is attacked by a giant bird
28. The Brigadier asks manager Stevens why Professor Jones is so firmly against his new process
29. Professor Jones explains the many alternate solutions to oil
30. Manager Stevens convinces the Brigadier about the qualities of his new process
31. Professor Jones figures out there is a connection between the death of miner Hughes and Global Chemicals pumping waste into the coal mine
32. Jo decides to go searching at the coal mine without Jones who refuses to help
33. Worker Dai Evans decides to go down to the pit
34. Manager Stevens tells the Brigadier that the mine must be sealed off but he disagrees and waits for the arrival of the Doctor to begin his inquiry at the mine
35. The Doctor is running away from stones and spears and rushes back to the Tardis
36. At the UNIT HQ, the phone rings agains when the Tardis materializes and the Doctor answers the call
37. The Doctor drives Bessie to Global Chemicals when the Brigadier leaves the office of Stevens in a hurry
38. Stevens summons the chauffeur and orders him to prevent anyone to go down the mine but Stevens told it in a funny way as if he was hypnotized
39. Once alone, Stevens puts on a secret headphone
40. Jo walks down to the coal mine and meets two workers to ask them to go down to the pit but they refuse without any clearances when the phone rings and sick and glowing Dai Evans begs for help
41. Bert Pritchard takes Jo with him to take care of Dai Evans
42. The Doctor and the Brigadier drive to the coal mine (nice back shot) when chauffeur Hinks leaves the place on the sly
43. The Doctor and the Brigadier run to the control room of the freight elevator to stop Jo and Bert Pritchard but worker Dave is unable to activate the brake!

[REVIEW]
The political and topical (the oil issue) serial of season 10 that is exciting and plays like the end of an era. It's also a real slice of English sociology from the Seventies with the working class miners, the militant long hair hippie scientist and a factory run by a strange manager and his two henchmen: the exterior footages are gloomy and realistic and shows a country with the stigmata of economical recession and dying industry. The Doctor appears like an oddity in this crude world and, furthermore, his trip to Metebelis 3 gives him a foretaste of the things to come because the blue planet is hostile and populated by wild beasts and unseen savages: a metaphore for his future investigation on Earth. Doctor Jones is a younger Doctor Who but behaving like Ky from "The Mutants" when facing the manager of Global Chemicals—the name itself foreshadows the contemporary globalist corporations. Jo Grant changes since her shy beginning—she even declines an offer to travel to a distant planet which saddens the Doctor—and is now very committed to the green cause. The first encounter between Doctor Jones and Jo reminds exactly Jo's initial discovery of the Doctor in "Terror of the Autons". As in "The Time Monster", the scientists are mavericks. This modern-day mad scientist serial shows four sides: the capitalists (Stevens, Elgin, Hinks), the army (UNIT), the workers and the agitators (biologist Clifford Jones' mini group).

[QUOTE]

Global Chemicals manager Stevens about his new process:
"After all, he and the rest of the doom merchants never stop telling us that we're using up the world's supply of oil. We can now produce 25% more petrol and diesel fuel from a given quantity of crude oil. If that it isn't conservation, I don't know what is!"

Episode 2/6 from "The Green Death"
Things to notice:
1. The Doctor rushes to grab a crowbar and insert it to the steel cable to create a brake and orders miner Dave Davis to reverse the motor and asks the Brigadier to help him
2. The cage slows at 600 yards and miner Bert opens the cage to test the height and launches a rope to climb down
3. Up there, the Doctor offers to borrow the other cage to rescue them but miner Dave tells the Doctor only GC* has a cutting tool to break the cable and free the other shaft
4. Once at the bottom of the pit, Bert and Jo realize the telephone line is dead an discover the body of Dai Evans lying unconscious and glowing green
5. The Brigadier phones Elgin at GC to ask a cutting tool when the line is cut off abruptly

*: GC stands for Global Chemicals.

[REVIEW]
It's still very good because it is reminiscent of the good old days of season 7 ("The Silurians" and "Inferno") with its threatening and tense characters working in research centers but updated for the youth movement (see Professor Jones doing a musical demonstration against Stevens and exclaims: "Stevens Out!"). The trespassing and the crossing of Global Chemicals industrial buildings remind the journey into the tight refinery from "Inferno". We learn now who is the real director of Global Chemicals: a voice coming from an apparatus ordering the Machiavellian and cynical manager Stevens. A new capitalist thug enters: Fell. However and on the other hand, executive Elgin is not that bad after all and even displays disrespect to Stevens. For the first time, the Brigadier wears civilian clothes.

[QUOTE]

About the effective treatment of reluctant senior executive Fell:
-The Monitor Voice: "Stevens."
-Stevens: "Yes?"
-The Monitor Voice: "Process him"
-Stevens: "Is that wise?"
-The Monitor Voice: "It is necessary. Do as I say. Process."
-Stevens: "Very well."
-Fell: "Who was that?"
-Stevens: "Our boss. Yours and mine."

*: GC stands for Global Chemicals.

[REVIEW]
It's still good because of the character's development: notice the tensions between the Brigadier and Stevens at the office and between Elgin and Fell. The moral schizophrenia of Fell is interesting which is also felt by director Stevens but in a more repressed way. When you come to think about it, it's very violent to see an organized suicide by an industrialist for the target audience. The research center angle reminds me "Quatermass II" because of the waste pipe. It's obvious now that Jo is in love with Professor Jones and the Doctor realizes it, especially, when he mentions his trip to Metebelis 3.

[QUOTE]

Stevens' weakness is revealed by his ruthless invisible boss:
-The Monitor Voice: "Stevens, the processing was a failure. This man is of no further use. I suggest self-destruction."
-Stevens: "But that's not necessary, surely?"
-The Monitor Voice: "You are a sentimentalist, Stevens. I repeat. Self-destruction."
