and if Spain ticki-tacki is victorious over Neymar and Hulk and 9 rather ordinary others, then we may even see Mr Watt's spaneesh man back to taunt us....

Graham is still trying to come to terms with Bayern Munich's dismantling of his vaunted Barcelona side. As someone remarked at my work, "Barca never got its ass kicked that badly even when they were terrible!"

Carlo Ancelotti replaces Mourinho--as if anyone truly "could"--at Real Madrid.

"....The telephone interrupts the Maestro’s memories. Morricone replies to a call from Nicola Piovani and a few minutes later he can be heard talking about football. We are fans of Roma. And we have never been enemies as many would like to have people believe...."

Spain outlasts Italy on penalties. The final everyone (me) dreaded is upon us. Some excellent penalties taken by both sides, though. Italy played well until the final minutes of added time but once the penalty kicks went to sudden death...

Turned channels over after id finished watching Cast a giant shadow again recorded from tcm, in time to see penelties at 6-6 and the italian miss. Annoying for them to be so close to nicking a game off Spain only to lose on sudden death pens

Italy lead Uruguay 1-0 at the half of the Confederations Cup third place match and it's been an excellent game so far. Wicked free kick by Diamanti to give the Azurri the lead.

You got to love how the slightest touch inside the box sends a player down screaming but that same fallen player has his arms full of tattoos. lol I guess those don't hurt. wink

Yes, the final between invincible Spain and irrepressible and BBC-worshiped Brazil is tonight.

The third-place match is always more entertaining than the final in these things, isn't it? Nothing to do but play football.

so 3-0 nil.

to Brazil.

In Brazil.

by one of the "worst Brazil teams in 60 years"

I turned over after the first goal went in and watched Billy Two Hats recorded from TCM.

I saw at the end they said something about several Spanish players were awful, Arbeloa, Torres, and a few others.

No sign of Graham Watt's Spaneesh man to tell us whats happened to Spain? Maybe its the same thing as Barca - bit tired and jaded and coming to the end of the road?

Spain has had its arse mauled at both the club and international levels this year and you'll notice that Graham has stayed far away with his mocking tones (which I happen to love, by the way). That's the thing about sports, isn't it? When one wins, you can say whatever you want but when one loses, one just has to keep one's mouth shut. One's One's One's. lol

Spain were, in a way, "beaten" by Italy on Thursday as their performance showed in the final, but at least the Azurri managed to dig a little deeper against Uruguay whereas Spain really had nothing left in the tank against Brazil. I wonder if this victory will go to Neymar and company's head. They need a lot of improvement, especially on defense, so it will be interesting to see how they play together in the next year before they host the real pressure event in 2014.

I don't see any major climate change over this result.
Spain just looked dead on their feet after the energy-sapping Italy game. They also missed Alonso and as noted, Arbeloa and Torres were truly awful.
Brazil looked stronger and sharper, but I don't see them improving enough in one years time to take the World Cup.

So the squads are back in pre season get togethers - derby county even went white water rafting as a team bonding exercise. New players are starting to arrive, friendlies being arranged - are we all geared up for the new season? Ready for the mayhem to begin?

What is the expectation for liverpool and leeds this season? And even phelpmeister's man utd?

For me, LFC MUST crash back into the top 4 this season or BR will start feeling some heat.
A transition season last time out, with quite a strong finish, despite all the negative press due to Suarez, has got Kopites dreaming again, but we shall have to wait and see.
I'm sure TG will be hoping for a top 2 finish or a play-off place, at least, for his beloved Leeds.
Mr Phelps will continue to sit back and enjoy things with a cheerful 'may the best team win' attitude smile Plus, he can watch EVERY game this time out as the USA has a deal that betters anything the UK can offer!!
What about you Bill? What do you want/expect from de 'ammers this season?

Liverpool certainly won't finish in the top four. In fact, I doubt they will even challenge it (sorry Kev). None of these new signings (so far) have inspired me whatsoever (from what I hear, Aspas will be well out of his depth). Bar the goalkeeper, even I could spot he is decent, but he's no better than Pepe. If you look at the squads the top teams will have and then Liverpool's, they are way behind. If we show some improvement and progress, I will accept that and maybe a decent tilt at a cup, but top four will be out of reach.

Oh, and I expect Carroll to plunder 30 goals for The Irons and they qualify for the Europa leaguewink

I dunno about Liverpool Kev - I think Thomas may be right. You may well be stronger than last season but that still puts you fighting with Arsenal and Tottenham for those 4-6 places.

Well, Mr Carroll may well get goals - but only - and I repeat only - if we give him plenty of service. Gotta say forget the stick and just cross him the ball at every opportunity, even full backs from the half way line, whip it into him and we'll practice getting people in and around Carroll and in the box for the second phase ball. People and media may complain but we cant afford not to play to our strengths, cant be too sniffy about it. It doesnt mean playing like animals like Stoke did, and fouling people all over the park, we can still pass it about but mustnt be afraid to get it in to him.

My fear, though, is that if you gear your entire system around one player - and being injury prone that player is then out - the system goes to shit. So they need another who can play that system (last year we used Carlton Tree for 10 weeks and he was shite) or two other strikers that can play a different system.

Today's talk is that we have bid for Vitesse Arnham's Wilfried Bony.

Apart from being an obvious good song chant, in the words of Donald Sutherland's General in the Dirty Dozen: "Ne-ver heard of him."

Top two would be lovely, thanks. Play offs a minimum.

Sorry, been on a genuine holiday, with the rest of the TGs - sorry, no other FSMers present. Probably our last family holiday, the elder little TG now being 19, for pity's sake, so we dug deep and took a villa/pool/car deal on the Algarve. Lots of local rose and vinho verde, swordfish steak and delicious ice cream. Not to mention truly laid back Portuguese drivers, who are simultaneously amongst the best and worst in Europe.

Anyway - topical footie quiz:

Sunderland did it in 1979, Villa did it in 1981. Who did it in 1980?
