When an expedition in search of a lost colleague traces his last steps in the frozen Arctic, the team discovers a hidden tropical oasis in the middle of the ice! As things quickly thaw out, clothes come off and long forgotten cavemen - and dinosaurs - come a-hunting for fresh meat. Soon, prehistoric hysteria sets in and it's every man - and scantily clad woman - for himself.

Some little girls can be murder! Thirteen-year-old Rynn (Foster) is a gifted prodigy who lives in a big old house with her reclusive father...all alone. Or does she? When Rynn's nosy landlady and a lecherous neighbor (Sheen) begin to suspect that this little girl is hiding a dark and dangerous secret, Rynn is determined to preserve her isolated existence at any cost - and stop those vicious rumors dead in their tracks.

FINALLY! I've waited my whole life to get this on American video, since the day that I saw it in the theater in 1971. And kudos to Kino Lorber for not using the awful British DVD artwork:

and instead going with this:

which of course is derived from the fabulous original British theatrical poster:

The American theatrical poster went with another, equally exciting, depiction:

WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL is, like most films released in the U.S. by Cinerama Releasing Corp, somewhat of an "orphan film" when it comes to home video release. CRC did not hold the copyright on its releases, and as a result, video rights are scatted to the four winds, with video labels having to track down and make individual deals with the various production companies involved in the films.

WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL was one of two screenplays that producers Jerry Gershwin and Elliott Kastner had purchased from author Alistair MacLean. The other script, also based on a MacLean novel, was WHERE EAGLES DARE, a World War II drama produced by MGM and released in 1968. Gershwin and Kastner had a unique partnership by which they found and developed properties entirely at their own expense. Kastner was based in London and Gershwin in Los Angeles. It's likely that Kino Lorber has struck a deal with the Gershwin-Kastner company Winkast Films and/or Glen Alden Corp., which had been authorized by Winkast to produce and enter into distribution agreements for WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL.

Thanks for that explanation, Bob DiMucci.

I'm fond of this old spy film and welcome it's DVD / blu-ray release in the USA, finally and at long last. This is the type of action movie that used to pack 'em in.

Kino has also released two other Alistair MacLean films, THE SATAN BUG and RIVER OF DEATH. And of course THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, ICE STATION ZEBRA, WHERE EAGLES DARE and PUPPET ON A CHAIN have been ubiquitous for awhile. The latter has just been released in a limited edition blu-ray of 1,000 copies by Scorpion. Screen Archives is of course the seller.

Bob DiMucci, as an aside, what's the story with the other Alistair MacLean adaptations? The independently produced B movies. There was FEAR IS THE KEY (1972), CARAVAN TO VACCARES (1974), THE GOLDEN RENDEZVOUS (1977) and BEAR ISLAND (1979) which had sporadic theatrical releases in the USA but no DVD. Then there was also a TV version of THE WAY TO DUSTY DEATH. Is some rights issue holding them up?

Kino Lorber have dated and detailed their upcoming Blu-ray release of director Gianfranco Parolini's western Adios, Sabata (1971), starring Yul Brynner, Dean Reed, Ignazio Spalla, Gérard Herter, and Salvatore Borghese. The release will be available for purchase on May 9.

With wicked humor, fabulous gadgets and action-packed gunfights, Adios, Sabata is a rip-roaring way to say goodbye!

1971's ADIOS, SABATA, "this rousing chapter of the Sabata series," was originally to be titled after its main character, "Indio Black." But when 1970's SABATA, with Lee Van Cleef, became a big hit in the U.S., producer Alberto Grimaldi decided during the English-dubbing to change all the references to "Indio Black" to "Sabata" and make it into a Sabata film.

Interestingly, Lee Van Cleef had been offered the role in "Indio Black," but had to turn it down because he was committed to THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RIDE!, in the role of "Chris Adams," which Yul Brynner had made famous in the first two MAGNIFICENT SEVEN films. So, instead, Yul Brynner got the role of Indio Black/Sabata. Lee Van Cleef returned to the role of Sabata for 1972's RETURN OF SABATA. All three Sabata films were directed by "Frank Kramer" (i.e., Gianfranco Parolini).

Kino Lorber have dated their upcoming Blu-ray release of director Gianfranco Parolini's film The Return of Sabata (1971), starring Lee Van Cleef, Giampiero Albertini, Reiner Schone, Ignazio Spalla, and Annabella Incontrera. The release will be available for purchase on May 9.

Synopsis: The man with gunsight eyes is back. And this time, he's judge, jury, and executioner. Lee Van Cleef, who made his film debut portraying a member of the killer gang hired to gun down Gary Cooper in High Noon, replays his most famous, most freewheeling, most gunslinging role in Return Of Sabata. This third go-round for the enigmatic sharpshooter who administers a unique brand of justice in the American West in the years following the Civil War finds Sabata in the role of victim.

Sabata's skills as a gambler and thief are unparalleled. However, when a shift band of desperadoes bilks him out of $5,000, he wants revenge. International showman Alberto Grimaldi (The Good The Bad And The Ugly) makes no exception with Sabata, bestowing upon the gunslinger an aim that is straight... and deadly.

since we are getting films from the ABC theatrical library, how about a widescreen stereo Song of Norway?
Since they are also doing Fox, how about a reissue of the twilight time OP The Egyptian?
