Jim Phelps: that footage is from a documentary on the making of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace dvd, one of best reasons to own it, & of course it's not included on the Blu-ray.

Thanks. Seeing that footage of Lucas's lectures to his minions and that horrific audition is like watching the planning of a tragedy, only I'm powerless to stop it.

When ever I see screen tests like this I ask myself, "You interviewed a thousand kids for the part and this was the best of the lot? Really?!" confused

I read somewhere, years ago, that the kid from The Sixth Sense (Haley Joel Osment) had auditioned for the part of Anakin. Now why didn't he get the part????

I'll say what I said back in 2013 -- I love the prequels. I think they are fine movies indeed (although not flawless, of course, but neither are the originals). And that's DESPITE growing up with the originals, and being 22 years old when PHANTOM MENACE premiered. Severely underrated.

Theres brief footage of his audition somewhere and in those 5 seconds, you could tell he was a much better actor than who they got*.

(Mind you, I do not blame Mr Lloyd for a damn thing. He was a child. Children usually don't have the life experience to pull from to be actors.)

The prequels have some of the worst acting ever put on screen. There's not one exciting action sequence, its one massive video game, and the scripts are terribly bogged down with uninvolving nonsense.

Theres definitely warts, yes - but Ewan McGreggor, Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid both acquitted themselves well.

Natalie Portman on the other hand...

But you can say that The Phantom Menace is the best movie ever made about the drama of galactic taxation.

Not when it comes to the prequels. big grin

That's another one I've never understood. The plot about taxation takes up about 3 minutes of screen time (one line in the opening roll up, and one scene in the senate). People act like the movie does nothing but talk about taxes for 2:15. smile The rest of the film has little or nothing to do with taxation....

When that's all I remember in a film filled with robots, spaceships, space battles and light saber duels, that's sort of a problem. big grin

I never saw a Star Wars film I didn't like. Obviously nothing compares to that first opening of the original in the 70s, with the never ending flyover. But though I loved Empire even more as a film, a little annoyance started with it's opening titles and the Episode 5 bit, and the revelation that it was to be a nine part saga. One Lucas would never finish. I've always thought it nonsense to take so long to get this thing done. It should have been done and dusted years ago. He only has himself to blame.

I don't hate the prequels, but they are unfortunately rather uneventful after a long time waiting. And I thought it would all be great by Revenge of the Sith, where we see an emotional pay-off. But there was nothing in the third installment to give that pay-off. The ultimate duel between Obi Wan and Anakin was a letdown, and the creation of the Emperor was too fast. He became the twisted gargoyle in what seemed like an instant instead of the power gradually making him worse, which I would have found more believable.

So I'm afraid the creator of this franchise did not give his best to it. The last two films were much better. The death of Han Solo was far more emotional than anything I've seen in the prequels, and the last sequence of Rogue One where Vader mows down all the rebels on the ship just prior to his appearance in the original film is also way more fun and exciting. Lucas basically took too long and lost the plot, and now moans about someone else picking it up, getting on with it and doing a better job. In terms of both drama and excitement other people are better.

Lucas long ago gave up the plot aside from giving basic plot sketches for holding the mind draining thousands of digital effects that he wanted to do. The prequels are less movies than 2 hour effects sizzle reels.

Really? The ever-annoying Jar Jar had something to do with taxation? I don't recall that aspect of it. Nor the pod race, nor the many lightsaber/blaster battles which took up most of the screen time having anything to do with it either (other than it being mentioned in the roll up that it is the reason for the blockade). The above mentioned aspects of the film may not have been that involving to you, but if all you remember is one line from the opening roll up and one scene in the senate, that must have been quite a roll up and quite an exciting senate scene!! wink

At some point, I'd love to do a tribute thread to the prequels, just to see how many (or few) of us there really are. No negative opinions allowed! smile

I love the prequels! Most of all REVENGE OF THE SITH! Actually I love all the STAR WARS films, and am going to THE LAST JEDI on Saturday.

I'm with you, henry. While the classic trilogy was the one with which I grew up, I still totally dug the prequels and by extension, the Clone Wars TV series. I really love that era of Star Wars storytelling, that pre-Rebellion era, in movies, TV, comics and novels.

That's fine if youse guys like the prequels, but you're relative oldsters! I'm beginning to have doubts that many around here hold these films up in high regard over other fantasy, sci-fi, horror or action films released around that same time. I know one poster said they were 14 when TPM was released, which is more the then-age group I am referring to here.

I worked with a young Northern Irish chap when the first prequel came out. He'd been really excited for it, had a teaser picture as his screensaver, talked about it frequently with shining eyes in the countdown to The Phantom Menace's release. Once he'd seen it, the screensaver disappeared, and he never to my knowledge mentioned it again.
