My personal feeling is that NO movie or TV show NEEDS to be released on DVD.

Movies have been a wonderful and rewarding addition to my life for over 70 years,
but they are not vastly important in the whole scheme of life experiences,
other than as 2-hour or once-a-week entertainments. The world can move on
comfortably each day without movies and/or TV shows.

What you're really asking is "What FAVORITE Movie/TV show WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE released on DVD?"

So, with that question in mind---if you asked me what films I'd like to HAVE released
on DVD, AND NOT DVD-R , I'd say "about 1/3 of the Warner Archive titles." smile

Um, why don't you get yourself a multi-region DVD player? 90% of your list is available - I own almost all of them - nice transfers, all legit. And before you say they're too expensive (the players), they can be had for under a hundred bucks. Of course, would you buy these films if they WERE available here, or is this just a list? In any case, if you love 'em you can have 'em easily.

Actually, Bruce, I do own a multi-region player and did when I wrote that list. And yes I would buy the films if they were available here. I prefer a domestic release without PAL speedup if at all possible and although I did break down and get a few of the titles in non-R1 releases I'm more inclined to buy a foreign DVD if it's a film unlikely to show up in R1 - something like IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY, for instance. Patience is a virtue apparently, though, as a good batch of these are now available (or soon to be) in R1:

WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS (Warner Archive MOD release)
THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (Warner release)
MACBETH (Olive release)
LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN (upcoming Olive release)
FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO (upcoming Universal/TCM release)
THE MERRY WIDOW (Warner Archive MOD release)
CAUGHT (upcoming Olive release)
RUTHLESS (upcoming Olive release)
THE HARDER THEY FALL (re-released by Columbia in a Bogart box set)
THE BREAKING POINT (Warner Archive MOD release)
THE BLUE DAHLIA (upcoming Universal/TCM release)

In addition, MINISTRY OF FEAR, THE WEDDING MARCH, and A MAN ESCAPED are all rumored to be upcoming Criterion releases.

And as a matter of fact, there are more Siodmak's in addition to CRY OF THE CITY and PHANTOM LADY that could use R1 releases and I'm going to list them now in hopes that it'll shake them loose:

THE FILE ON THELMA JORDAN
THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF UNCLE HARRY
THE SUSPECT
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY

A Siodmak that I'm very curious to see is his last French film, PIEGES, made in 1939, which stars Maurice Chevalier, Marie Dea, Erich Von Stroheim and Pierre Renoir! It's available in R2, but, alas, without English subs.

Just Shoot Me. I loved that US sitcom. They released seasons 1-3, but it doesn't look like we're going to get 4-7, such a shame.

Why on earth has Chicago Hope not been released on DVD?!

Or how about Providence? There is a DVD collection of the series but it is inexplicably missing many important episodes. I can understand a "best of" episode highlight DVD of a sitcom, but of a prime time drama? Give me a break man!

I agree with gstevens that more if not all of the PEYTON PLACE tv series should be released -
why not a huge box set with all 514 episodes plus the two tv sequels , Shout Factory ?-- all of 1225 eps. of DARK SHADOWS has been issued and it was not a prime time show but a daytime soap full of bloopers.

PEYTON PLACE was a grade A production for five continuous years - there would have been no DALLAS or DYNASTY or dozen of other prime time soaps if PP hadn't paved the way. The recent Entertainment Weekly list of best 100 tv shows included DALLAS but not PEYTON PLACE. Probably because most of the reviewers do not know or have never watched this "antique from the 60s". (They also did not include in the Best 100 movies - BEN HUR, SNOW WHITE, SPARTACUS, FANTASIA, or PINOCCHIO, to name a few. )

@ Manderley, I just read your post and wonder why you are opposed to the Warner Archive issues on DVD-Rs -- actually some sets are not being issued on standard dvds.

The complete NAKED CITY series is scheduled to be released in a 29-DVD set sometime in the near future. It's now available for pre-order at Amazon.

Now that "Cheyenne" is getting additional seasons released, and "Maverick" has started up, I'd like to see Warner Bros. release the John Russell western series "The Lawman." I'd prefer that over "Bronco" or "Sugarfoot," since I was never a big fan of either of those two.

I'm happy to say that my list has been substantially whittled down:

CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (1965)
FILMING OTHELLO (1978)
LOS OLVIDADOS (1950)
EL - THIS STRANGE PASSION (1953)
THE CRIMINAL LIFE OF ARCHIBALDO DE LA CRUZ (1955)
THE RECKLESS MOMENT (1949)
GREED (1924)
THE WEDDING MARCH (1928)
BEGGARS OF LIFE (1928)
THE LUSTY MEN (1952)
HE RAN ALL THE WAY (1951)
BOOM! (1968)
CRY OF THE CITY (1948)
THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF UNCLE HARRY (1945)
THE SUSPECT (1944)
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY (1944)

I think I'll add a few more in the hope it will invoke the gods of film to make them appear (in R1 with subtitles)...

LA CHIENNE (1931)
LE CRIME DE MONSIEUR LANGE (1936)
LES ANGES DU PECHE (1943)
GUEULE D'AMOUR (1937)
L'ETRANGE MONSIEUR VICTOR (1938)
PATTES BLANCHES (1949)
LA BELLE EQUIPE (1936)
UN CARNET DE BAL (1937)

VOICI LE TEMPS DES ASSASSINS... (1956)
LA MAIN DU DIABLE (1943)
IMPASSE DES DEUX ANGES (1948)
LA VERITE (1960)
LA PRISONNIERE (1968)
