Why is Paltrow so hated? What did I miss?

THE EXORCIST---director William Friedkin commented on the sequels to his classic horror movie, "Well, there isn't one sequel to THE EXORCIST that's worth a bucket of warm spit. THE EXORCIST 2 is one of the worst films I've ever seen. It's terrible. I find it worse than terrible; I find it disgusting."

That's funny. I don't think the original is worth a bucket of warm spit. While the scenes that are there from the book are done virtually identically to the book, there are little things added that detract from the story's subtlety (the flame on the candle exploding out as it does before Chris goes upstairs; not in the book and an idiotic thing to have any character just shrug off). Then there are the scenes not in the film that should have been (virtually the entire buildup to the possession), causing the movie to be rather disjointed.

Exorcist III is damn fine... until you get to the Warner Bros. version of the ending. What a travesty.

20 MOST HATED CELEBRITIES---results of STAR magazine's annual poll for the "20 Most Hated Celebrities in Hollywood".

I don't get why people devote such energy to negativity. One of my best friends will go on rants about how she hates Anne Hathaway and how she's "stupid" and "a bitch". I'm always thinking, "How would you know? Have you ever met her?"

This has become an age where people can't just leave alone the things or people they don't enjoy; they must go out of their way to make it known to everyone. Sickening.

I'll stick with the idea that hate is too strong an emotion to waste on someone you don't like.

It's insane, if you ask me. I wasn't even aware that Paltrow and Hathaway were hated.

As for Katherine Heigl, to this day, I'm still trying to grasp why she's disliked. People say that it has something to do with her speaking out against KNOCKED UP. Me, I think she was just ahead of the curve in seeing that the emperor (Apatow) has no clothes. In a few years, I'm sure we'll all see it, too. (The line "Look out. He wants to rear your child." may well be one of the worst lines ever committed to film, so that's pretty much my dog in this fight.)

And really, we hate Matt Lauer now? I did not know that.

Not that I care for any of this celeb gossip wink but Hathaway apparently is considered a fony because she lobbied her ass off for that oscar for Les Miserables and well her previous oscar hosting was a disaster. I'm surprised Jay Leno isn't higher up in the list. wink

Also, that list doesn't look too current as it includes Matt Lauer but excludes Piers Morgan.

Yeah that's kinda weird. And I find Lauer only half as oily as Brian Williams.

While I like Gwyneth Paltrow, I think she has haters because of the whole lifestyle thing (not least with her Goop website). And surely Chris Brown of Rihanna-beating fame should be ranked a whole lot higher than all of 'em?

Guys, I'm pretty sure that Dan is referring to the never-ending spate of insulting posts that get put up on here whenever one disagrees with another's opinion.

And he's right. Criticism (even of the negative variety), directed at the components of an art form is part of any appreciation of that art form. Insulting another's opinion should NOT be.

I'm pretty sure he's responding to the responses to the Most Hated list, which convey mostly confusion and bewilderment at some of the selections, and not insults to anyone. And a "Most Hated Celebrity" list is not any sort of criticism in the first place. It's just a bit of nastiness.

Is this even fiscally possible?

Hard to say but it would certainly keep the momentum going, I guess following the direction that Marvel/Disney have kind of gone with their movies.

ILM are certainly going to have a hard time keeping up with that amount of work though.

FRIDAY, APRIL 19

WEIRD SCIENCE---R-rated remake underway of the 1985 movie that starred Kelly LeBrock and Anthony Michael Hall. Joel Silver (DIE HARD, LETHAL WEAPON) returns as the producer.

TODAY---Ann Curry was constantly humiliated and forced out by her fellow TODAY staffers according to NEW YORK TIMES reporter Brian Stelter in his upcoming book TOP OF THE MORNING: INSIDE THE CUTTHROAT WORLD OF MORNING TV. Stelter said executive producer Jim Bell, who blamed Curry for TODAY's declining ratings, started "Operation Bambi" to get rid of her after one staffer said firing Curry would be like "killing Bambi". Also, "several boxes of Curry's belongings ended up in a coat closet, as if she had already been booted off the premises." Matt Lauer supposedly said, "I can't believe I'm sitting next to this woman." Staffers ridiculed her choice of outfits by photoshopping a photo of her in a yellow dress with Big Bird and captioning it, "Who wore it best?" Stelter wrote, "Some mornings, she cried as she read e-mail and Twitter messages from fans...She told friends that her final months were a form of professional torture." He added that she was "profoundly hurt and humiliated" by her firing and the way the her TODAY co-workers treated her.

DEXTER---Showtime confirmed the upcoming Season 8 will be the last season.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY---director James Gunn commented on how the talking Rocket Racoon will be portrayed in the movie, "I’ve done a lot of studying with real racoons, and we had real racoons come in. We’ve done photography with them, I’ve played with racoons, and fed racoons, and dealt a lot with real racoons to get some of the behavior down, because it’s really, really important to me that Rocket Racoon, who is the heart of the movie, is not a cartoon character, it’s not Bugs Bunny in the middle of The Avengers, it’s a real, little, somewhat mangled beast that’s alone...he’s been created by these guys to be a mean-a** fighting machine."

CAPTAIN AMERICA---Hayley Atwell said fans want her character, Peggy Carter, back in the film franchise, "There's been an online campaign for Peggy to be featured. People really liked her. So Marvel have made sure that as part of Comicon there will be a little kind of snapshot as to what Peggy's actually really capable of, which was finished here and which was great fun. Hopefully, it will lead to other things."

SEX TAPE---Cameron Diaz is in negotiations to star with Jason Segel in this Sony Pictures comedy movie about a married couple who make a sex tape to spice up their sex life. When the tape disappears, they have to retrieve it.

PASSENGERS---Keanu Reeves stars in this sci fi movie as a passenger on a spaceship during a 120-year-long voyage to colonize another planet. His hibernation pod malfunctions and awakens him 100 years early. To cure his loneliness, he awakens a beautiful woman for companionship.

UNDERNEATH---horror movie underway about newlyweds trapped in an underground cave system. The husband is injured and as the wife attempts to find help, they discover they are being hunted by an evil presence.

TAG BROTHERS---Will Ferrell and Jack Black may star in this comedy movie based on a WALL STREET JOURNAL article about two ex-classmates in their 40s who maintain a long-running game of Tag.

SAINT GEORGE---new FX sitcom starring George Lopez as a divorced man with a young son, overbearing mother living with him and a part-time teaching job in night school.

There was a new Harry Potter movie almost every year for a full decade. There has been a new Marvel comics movie almost every year since 2008. Why would it be so difficult to have a new Star Wars movie every year, especially if every other one will be a standalone?

WS - dear. I certainly don't believe it will be R rated by the time it's released.

Captain America - That's cool that Marvel has done that, hopefully it will get released for all to see not too long after ComicCon.

That's unlikely, but certainly possible. Perhaps it's just a slight difference in interpretation. However, regardless of how one may see it, "Ironic and ridiculous. Well played." is not exactly a constructive contribution to the discourse.
