I was 18 (and working in a cinema) when Phantom Menace came out.

Hated it. No hindsight involved - it bored me out of my mind on the first watch. I was already feeling uncertain about SW (after growing up adoring the original films) after the Special Editions, but the prequels took me right out of it.

I did watch Clones and Sith on DVD, but I didn't like them either. Everything about all three films was so sterile. The actors (mostly good actors!) are stood around saying boring, inhuman lines, or walking along a conveyer belt and never looking like they're in a real environment, and there are no emotions, and basically ugh. I didn't even like the scores - all the choir wailing on Duel of the Fates seemed so overblown placed against the dull action.

I was out of love with Star Wars for 15 years after that.

And then within minutes of The Force Awakens beginning, Poe cracks a joke ("Do I talk first?"). A human, real joke. And between him, and Finn, and Rey - these wonderful characters behaving and talking like actual people, not just mouthpieces for dull arguments about dull unreal things - I was brought joyfully, tearfully, when Rey takes that saber, screaming back in Star Wars world.

I'm leaving in a few minutes to go and see The Last Jedi, and I'm *so* excited to see them again. big grin

BACK! It's scrappy and messy and overlong and I ADORED IT.

I saw Star Wars when it came out and liked it, but I was way more into horror movies like The Omen and Exorcist, Carrie at that time. Empire Strikes I liked better, but neither was exactly a favorite of mine.

My father took me to see Return of the Jedi and that pretty much killed Star Wars for me. I've tried many times to give all the movies a try and I find it all so clichéd Western/superhero it actually irritates the yee haw out of me.

But I'm a weirdo, I also FAR prefer Wagner's Ring to anything Tolkien. Shoot I prefer Godfather II to anything Tolkien or Lucas for that matter.

Star Wars is dead to me. These new characters are dull and lack personality. Quipping a few jokes here and there doesn't make them interesting to me. And I'll never take this emo nerd childish villain seriously. Talk about a let down.

Thats because JJ Abrams (and a lot of screenwriters in the last 15 years) are so poor at storytelling, I'm left to wonder if they're not illiterate. The characters lack characterization and no amount of "Well, its a mystery we'll solve later" will fix that because its apparent from the get-go that there is no backstory to start with.

Sorry that what made SW alive again for me killed it for you. But I don't find any of the new characters dull - I find them entirely vivid and vital and - crucially - I like being around them. This was the thing really missing for me in the prequels - I just didn't care to hang around with any of those pompous speechifyers at all. Also ironic that you can't take that type of villain seriously when "emo nerd childish" is more and more describing actual real life villiany year by year.

But I'm sorry you don't enjoy it now, genuinely. Maybe, like me, you will again one day.

Don't disagree with your analogy of real life villany in the world, but it doesn't make for a compelling character in a fictional story.

Completely agree with everything you have said, Simon.

Haven't seen the new movie yet but am planning to in the next week. Looking forward to it.

Well put and tragically accurate, too.

And I thought it was a cringe worthy out of place joke. It was forced and typical (especially of Disney) to make everything so "jokey". Humor is subjective of course.

What was that cornball line? "I'm glad you're here to tell us these things!"

Back when the one liners were actually funny. Or at least delivered well.

I'm glad I didn't listen to any of the complaints about the STAR WARS films because I would have missed out on a great deal of enjoyment and I lot of fun. I love them!

That's the spirit, henry! Don't let these thugs scare you! (To quote Poe Dameron) wink

BTW, have you seen The Last Jedi yet? (I'll be seeing it in a few hours.) I'm interested in whether you liked it. Just a "Loved It", "Liked It", "It was Okay" or a "Hated it" will do. No spoilers!! smile

Awesome!! I'm really looking forward to it now. Not that I wasn't before! But your taste when it comes to these sort of things is more in line with mine than some of the Negative Neddies that seem to only want to spoil everyone's good time.... smile

Somewhere, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have become the movies of some young boy and girl's childhood.

...not including the eternal youth of our henry and jenkwombat. wink

The Prequels Strike Back: a Fan's Journey (2016)

Why didn't you Star Wars nerds mention this?!?

I'm guessing this guy is younger than most of us FSMers...

"No one hates Star Wars like a Star Wars fan."

My God, that's ME!

It’s very apparent Nu Star Wars is beloved by little girls everywhere. Rey & Jyn are their new role models. They’re learning, girls are perfect and can do anything without any effort. And boys are evil, flawed, buffoons.
