Strange news about the upcoming Columbo movie set...

Columbo - 1991-1993 Collection to be Widescreen
New transfers, new vieo formatPosted by Gord Lacey
1/04/2011

When we first posted about Columbo: The Mystery Movie Collection 1991-1993 we reported that it'd be Full Frame (1.33:1). Universal recently updated their specs, listing the video as Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1), so we contacted them to get the story on the spec change.

Universal is using a new Anamorphic Widescreen transfer for the set, opening up the sides of the picture, much like Warner Bros did with the early seasons of ER (and not what happened to the first season of Kung Fu, which had the tops and bottoms cropped). Obviously these didn't air in widescreen initially, but we're hoping the new transfers look great.

The 3-disc set will be released on February 8, and can be purchased from Amazon.com for $20.99

And "Dragnet" joins the ranks of completed on DVD this April 12!

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Dragnet-1967-Season-4/14902

As one who waited five years just to see the series unstalled on DVD, the fact that in the span of less than a year the final three seasons would get out is nothing short of miraculous from my standpoint!

The previous poster is on my ignore list so he shouldn't waste time trying to engage in more pointless acts of baiting.

Remainder of Vegas S2, now announced.

and i really do wish you would read and comment on the Olbermann book review. you've never been shy about publicly- and without prompting- offering your feelings for the man.

Interestingly this will mean Shout! will have gone ahead and done two seasons of Dragnet before doing another season of "Adam-12". Let's hope they remember to attend to that as well so that in 2011 the Big Three of Jack Webb shows will all be finished!

No. As was the case with S2 some episodes are reportedly the cut versions from german broadcasts of the 80s (shortened to run 45 minutes).
But it is still strange that Universal Germany had better remastering than the UK!

But this sets are widely available and will not completely vanish from the market like McMillan S2 (even on ebay!).

"Car 54 Where Are You?" is pushed back to April 12, meaning I'll be spending a lot on that day with that and "Dragnet"!

They're cut? Glad I asked. Sigh.

That time takes into account the speedup that always happens with foreign region PAL releases? I think by then normal running time would have been 49 minutes but that could shorten things to 46 in that format.

Don't know. The selected cut episodes are from broadcasts of a big network in the 80s (with german text for the end titles). The uncut versions have german dubbing from later broadcasts on cable.

Looks like Five-O will really be fast tracked to completion since the early indications is that S11 (according to the Five-O site) will be April 19. So if that's the case, we'll probably see the final season in August-September.

But the fast tracking might also mean we won't see remastering jobs for those seasons as we didn't with S10. But I can frankly live with that.

That would be a shame. It's too good a show not to be remastered for the best possible picture and sound quality. The first 9 seasons
look great, and anything less than this level of quality would be an
injustice to the show. I'd rather wait a little longer for the last seasons to come out with better picture and sound than to get them
sooner in an inferior version.

Watching Hawaii Five-O's "Journey Out Of Limbo" this afternoon left me wondering why Richard Denning sounded like he'd been dubbed by Casey Kasem in his only scene...

Well, a post about the first season release of "Ironside" was what started this thread many years ago and I'm happy to report that "Ironside" continues to sell well as a Shout "Select" title (available only directly from them) that we will be seeing Season 5 released this May.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Ironside-Season-5/15003

This year is notable for being (1) the first year of Elizabeth Baur as Fran Belding, replacing the departed Barbara Anderson (2) the change in the theme arrangement and (3) the only guest shot by Burr's former "Perry Mason" co-star Barbara Hale during the eight year run of the show.

Picked up the final season of MTM last week, and fortunately it had the curtain call with credits as expected. What a treat. "I treasure you people." Very moving. A perfect show; the finale plus every episode that preceded it.
