I really don't like the cover for S5. That's about the most unflattering picture of Susan Saint James I've ever seen.

The sad thing about Car 54 is that the episodes themself look spectacular. Great transfers from 35mm source elements, pristine appearance and it's a very funny show as always. But now it becomes the first show I have to have an episode printout guide handy for to choose what to watch and I also have to keep the discs totally out of the case permanently because the packaging is so bad that sooner or later you're going to snap the discs.

I actually think she looks pretty yummy in that one. In the others
she either looks just cute or like a school teacher;
or like a (gasp)...a WIFE!

There oughta be a McMillan & Wife thread! This is a series I've always liked and now with the whole shebang almost on DVD, the time is right for some conversation about it. So get started, troops!

So start one! If you build it, they will come.

I don't know about you guys, but I'll propably skip season 6, which became
McMillan without his wife. Universal made a big boo-boo when they wouldn't
give Susan St. James and Nancy Walker their well deserved raises.
SPOILER:
So, out of spite, what does Universal do? They kill off both characters.
Booooooo hisssssssssss!

What about you? Are you gonna be a completist and get the 6th season?

Actually, Mildred wasn't killed off and Nancy Walker wouldn't have returned anyway because that was the year she got her own sitcom, "The Nancy Walker Show" which flopped and then that same year she got another sitcom that flopped "Blansky's Beauties". She didn't even do any guest-shots on "Rhoda" that year. The explanation, I kid you not, was that Mildred "opened a diner" (an in-joke reference to her Bounty paper towel commercials).

What was more offensive was how Sally's death was dismissed in the space of a one sentence throwaway by Enright no less! Even a simple "Mac grieves" montage of clips from past shows at least would have made it more palatable. But the producers were so P.O'd at Saint James for not taking a pay cut (which everyone else on the show was doing, because they were getting barely much of a budget overall for one final season) that I guess dismissing her character as non-important was there way of getting even.

Thanks for the correction. I haven't seen these since they originally aired
(except season one, of course). The way I had remembered it was that
both Sally and Mildred died together in a plane crash.

I read somewhere that Susan St. James wanted a raise because Rock Hudson got one.
Either way they should have just ended the show or had her appear
in only a few of the episodes at least. They could have had Sally away,
visiting family or something. Oh well, at least we got five great seasons
of fun to watch over and over at our own convenience.

I don't believe Hudson got a raise. Rather it was a case of him willing to come back for less simply because he wanted the work. John Schuck was willing to come back in a reduced role for less because he was already getting paid by the same producers for his starring role in the short-lived flop sitcom "Holmes And Yoyo". The NBC Mystery Movie was barely hanging by a thread that last year and it only got renewed on the condition that there would be cuts everywhere in the budget (which also explained why "Columbo", the #1 show of the Wheel only had three episodes produced since they weren't going to have Peter Falk take a paycut given the problems Falk had caused in the past over money)

I've said the best way to undo the damage of "McMillan" would be to have a new show today, "McMillan And Mom" in which Stewart McMillan, Jr. (that perpetually unseen baby from all of Sally's pregnancies!) becomes the new Commissioner of San Francisco, and frequently has to deal with his Mom causing him headaches on cases because of her enthusiasm that he's following in his father's footsteps. smile (and Enright can still be around as the retired Chief of Detectives to help out!)

Not bad! Isn't Susan St. James retired from acting now?

Well, all that's left now is the remaining seasons of McCloud,
plus McCoy and Cool Million and I'll have all the Mystery Movie
shows that I always wanted. I don't remember Tenafly,
Amy Prentiss or Lanigan's Rabbi. Hec Ramsey I vaguely
remember, although I might be willing to add these to
my collection if VE1 releases them.

Oh, I almost forgot to ask you, Eric...is the Mystery Movie opening
on all the episodes of season 2 of McMillan & Wife?

It's not on Season 2. It's on all episodes of S3. VEI's release of "The Snoop Sisters" also includes the Mystery Movie opening, but in truncated form on all but one episode (and not in the original pilot).

If Shout! manages to get up to S7 of "Ironside" then you'll get a chance to see the "Amy Prentiss" pilot.

Susan still acts on rare occasions and John Schuck is of course still active in the musical stage (saw him in a production of "1776" a couple years ago). It would certainly work as a one-shot idea!

Oh, and on the matter of better images of Susan for the box covers, something more like this (from S3 "Reunion In Terror" which also has Hudson's "Seconds" leading lady Salome Jens in a minor role) was what I had in mind. smile

D'oh! I almost forgot about The Snoop Sisters. I still need to order that set.
I hope VEI includes the opening on the U.S. releases. Too bad they couldn't
have released COLUMBO and BANACEK.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! smile

Is VEI still planning to release IT TAKES A THIEF?
Maybe they have THE NAME OF THE GAME in the works, too.

I've heard nothing on "It Takes A Thief" since the first rumor last fall I think it was. "Name Of The Game" I think is unlikely to make it.

For unreleased Universal shows, I still have a higher preference for "Switch" to make it to DVD.

If nothing happens with THIEF by September, I'm going with the sets
released in Germany. I wish there was an e-mail address for VEI.
I would like to request some of these other Universal shows.

Absolutely! I love SWITCH. I have the bootleg dvds that made the rounds
a few years ago. While they're watchable, I want remastered and crisp
and uncut dvd sets of the whole series.

I think Australia has released It Takes A Thief S1 already so if you want to go a foreign route, better them.

Yeah, I just did some research and found that Australian release
available through EzyDVD. I hope they release seasons 2 & 3.
I also noticed the Aussie's are up to season 7 with IRONSIDE (!)
They've also released seasons 2 and 3 of KOJAK in the U.K.
The other day I was checking out Ebay.UK and noticed quite a few
region 2 releases of classic shows like THE OUTER LIMITS,
KOLCHAK, LOST IN SPACE, etc. that are pressed on single-sided discs,
as opposed to our crappy double-sided discs. Funny how we American
customers always get screwed on our own tv show dvds,
while overseas countries are making way better product
and presentation. Some of their dvd releases have
extras that are not on our region 1 dvds.

Not crazy about the cover art for seasons 4 & 5. Were there no photos of Hudson & St.James actually together in a photo available?

What do you mean? They are together on the covers. Looks good enough to me.

McMillan & Wife season 2 is slated for release on June 7th, although Amazon is not yet
taking pre-orders for it. They will within the next few weeks though.

They are together on the covers thanks to the magic of Photoshop. I prefer using photos of them where they are actually in the same shot.

The prints on Kojak seasons 2 and 3 are not remastered so, your mileage may vary.

He’s the ultimate smooth operator: handsome, debonair and charming enough to melt your heart while relieving your bank account of its very last cent. He’s Alexander Mundy, cat burglar by trade and now ex-con, pardoned by the government on one condition: that he put his extraordinary procurement talents to work as a secret agent for the U.S.A. Robert Wagner shines in the complete first season of this spy classic finally on DVD.

Special Features:

A Matter of Larsony - New interview with writer Glen A. Larson
Magnificent Thief - the rarely seen extended version of the pilot episode
