Not to dwell on the negative, but I remember when I saw Snow Dogs, I nearly wept when I saw what RA had done to his hands. His pain must have been unbearable. It got me to wondering about something he had said in an old interview about his time with Bruce Lee. He commented about how Bruce was megadosing vitamins, and he tried it as well as part of his training with Bruce. He said he believed it caused him to be almost crippled like he had arthritis. I wonder if he may have already been showing symptoms then; he would have been about the age when onset of RA normally occurs. I do wish they could have made The Silent Flute. Struck by her obvious good looks and age difference with the Great Coburn, I decided to look her up to see "how fast she remarried"--yes, I am a cynical sob--only to find that Paula Coburn died from cancer in 2004, less than two years after James Coburn. That's shocking. There was a great documentary on James Coburn a few years ago (& he was just as cool off-screen) & his wife was featured & she was lovely...& died at 48! He died in front of her, I think I'm right in remembering that they were both sitting in the lounge, & he had a heart attack ( heart trouble & arthritis seem to be linked). And yes...The Honkers!! Coburn is escaped convict Elmer Trace, a nasty piece of work who'll say and do anything to get the ten thousand dollar bank draft hidden on Adam Cartwright's saddle. Pernell Roberts once again holds his own quite admirably in the face of a brilliant guest star (see: "The Crucible", with brutal guest star Lee Marvin, also from season three). In the photo gallery which accompanies nearly every episode of the Bonanza DVDs, Coburn is featured in some delightful behind-the-scenes photos that show off his Grin to its greatest effect. The likes of Coburn, Marvin, and yes, Steve Ihnat--who was a dear and close friend to Michael Landon and who died just one day before Bonanza's Dan Blocker--are just among many of the bonafide legends of their time who appeared on Bonanza.
