Jim - a rather predictable squad. The moment they chose Roy Safe Hodgson, you knew you would have a team of hard-working, safe but dull players. You knew that gareth Barry and James milner would be first choices on the team sheet and, if he could, he'd play with 5 holding players!! Without Rooney there isnt much flair to choose from these days - when you look at the flair players in the prem league they arent english - but even so, its a safe dull squad. Sadly it is probable oxlade chamberlain wont get more than ten minutes when the game is already lost and people like walcott, who run down alleyways all day - get sussed out by the more cunning Euro full backs and rarely deliver any threat. No, it will be worth watching for Spain, Holland and Germany and the Italian national anthem and any rare scandinavian women in the crowd!!

I think Pele had over a 1000 career goals didnt he? He takes some stick in the comparison stakes because some of his goals were scored against second-rate opposition. People who say other more recent players are better than him have to remember that of his era, when he appeared on the scene, no one had seen anything like it. And he got better and better. The difference of what he could do - or attempted to do - compared to most other players, was phenomenal. Its not a great step from Best to Cruyff to Maradona to Ronaldo to Messi, but from everyone else in the world to Pele was the leap of another universe.

Yes thomas, there are a lot of worse choices for manager. I reckon he'll do okay - but tough time to take over Liverpool as squad in transition and previous two managers didnt fix it.

Seeing as I'm badgering the music side of the board with this topic of mine, I thought I'd post it here among the "less hostile" denizens of this here football thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgMe5uypMRE&feature=related Does anyone know the title of this stock cue used for the UEFA Champions League Show? sorry Jim, dont know it. did you see England won their last friendly before the euros then?? - they were mostly outplayed by the Belgiums and very, very dull - hardly created any chances but capitalised on an error, nicked a chance and scored. But picked up another key injury to centrehalf cahill. Much speculation whether for the first time in years, as England are crap and key players are dropping like flies caught in insect spray, they have no expectation from the country or the press or the fans, so may be a surprise package. We're crap so we are going to do better? Seems more like extreme wishful thinking to me!

If playing at their best, no one is going to beat Spain or Holland in this tournament. Somebody may do a defensive Chelsea rope-a-dope on them and mug them in a one-off but cant see it myself. Germany have a chance as they always play greater than the sum of their parts so you can never write them off, England however - apart from maybe two three occasions in 45 years - never get anywhere near the sum of their individual parts!
