The Wild Geese (1978) **** out of ****

Finally saw this movie after my dad has told me about it for years. Excellent movie with a solid cast and some great sequences, with an ending I never expected. The occasional splashes of humor were very well-done as well.

THICK AS THIEVES – 6/10. Nice, small, forgettable.

I kept wondering during the whole movie where I had seen Robert Forster before. IMDb revealed it was JACKIE BROWN – he was the detective in that one, too.

I'm something of a Robert Forster nut. I try to watch all of his films. If you want to see a really crazy but cool flick of his check out American Perfekt.

Forster wasn't a detective in Jackie Brown, he was a bail bondsman.

I just remember it was one of the sweetest melancholic love stories in a movie that I ever saw. smile

Pandorum - I thought this was going to be a B movie, and I was wrong...kind of. With the first outerspace sequence, I was wow'ed and it almost felt like the first time I saw Alien; I was very excited and anticipating an eerie space adventure. That was short-lived. In a nutshell, this is Alien 3 meets Cube meets Event Horizon meets The Descent. The ship design and sets were very cool - it has a "no expense was spared" look - and the feel of the movie was very creepy and in keeping with horror. The biggest problem was, the story really didn't go anywhere. After an hour, I found myself shifting in my seat, wondering when things were going to go somewhere. Oddly, the characters had goals and a clear mission (and they traveled all over the ship), but it just seemed the movie was spinning its wheels with fight after fight, plus nothing they were saying was very interesting. Similar to Indiana Jones 4, the characters tell us the whole story (through long, drawn out assumptions) instead of the visuals (or the characters) giving us subtle clues so we can figure it out for ourselves. In a movie with a plot this complicated, it needed a better method of explanation, such as through a ship's visual computer log. Also, the characters were all trying to act tough and gave insincere facial expressions, and it didn't work. All in all, a visually great film with a great feel that failed to deliver a great story and failed to deliver any real sense of suspense or drama. One problem was, there were too many creatures. If they'd kept it to just one, it would have automatically created suspense because there's less of a chance for it to be where you are - you never know where it's going to pop up next. When you have hundreds, you instantly expect to see one at every turn, which makes you less nervous because you're already anticipating one being there. I'd say it's far better than Event Horizon, but less suspenseful than Cube. There are some decent scenes of blood and gore. If you've got a nice home theater setup, you're going to love the way this sounds... 7.5

2012 - Wow. Where to begin? Cusack was definitely miscast, but I see why they chose him - for his comedic abilities. Unfortunately, going into this film, I didn't realize this was an action-comedy. I thought it was straight action-drama. Well, the drama failed and the comedy missed the mark virtually every time. It didn't occur to me this was a comedy until the limo scene, where the family starts its escapes from the city. Some big ideas, some big visuals and great effects, but the story and the way it was told sucked. Danny Glover was 100% unconvincing as the U.S. President, the same way Cusack was ineffective as a hero. The Russian pilot should've been older, since the (I assume) male model that was chosen for the part didn't bring the funny scenes to life the way an older person would have (remember the crazy cosmonaut in Armageddon?) About the only person who even remotely fit his role was Oliver Platt. I'm not sure if the movie simply suffered from poor casting or poor writing. Maybe a little of both. All I know is, I'll never watch this piece of garbage again - 4.5

Rewatched "A Streetcar Named Desire" last night on TCM. Everytime I watch that film I feel as if I could kick the shit out of both Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando) and cowardly Mitch (Karl Malden).

It's up there with the pretty good ones!

"Alice in Wonderland" (Tim Burton, 2009) 6,5/10

Dissapointing and useless. Nice role for Johnny Depp there, but Alice was pretty boring and a bid weak too. Nice set designs and a great score by Danny Elfman. Yet somehow, this movie seemed pointless from the beginning. My initial thought was: Why would Burton remake "Alice in Wonderland?". Too bad, I really love Tim Burton's movies, but this is his weakest effort in years.

I was motivated to buy the DVD of "The Andromeda Strain" after getting the recent CD from Intrada. I always liked the film but never added it to my collection because it never got the Special Edition treatment. Anyway, it's hard to believe this film got a "G" rating. It has those scenes of dead humans all over the town of Piedmont. It also shows a topless teenage girl among the dead, always edited out of TV showings. You also see the doctors walking naked down the hall to the decontamination chambers. I guess the MPAA ratings members fell asleep while viewing the film. That aside, I love the film. Very believable science fiction story. The only thing I found hard to swallow was that it shows a U.S. Senator actually caring about how taxpayer dollars were being spent. I rate it 9/10.

Watched the 1966 film "The Oscar" starring Stephen Boyd and Tony Bennett last night on TCM.

The people responsible for making this film must have been nuts! It just doesn't add up any other way.

Yes, I agree. It's his worst effort since "Planet of the Apes".

Images (1972): 6.5/10

Eerie, nonsensical, well-performed, killer John Williams score.

36 Hours (1964). 7 of 10. Considering that I generally don't like James Garner as a film lead, this one falls in the category of one of his better efforts. The last 20 minutes of the film drag though, after he and Eva Marie Saint escape and Rod Taylor gets bumped off because if anything Taylor really steals the picture.

You might want to place a spoiler strip across that last bit of info.

Great movie though. I'm a huge James Garner fan and this is one of his finest.

"Cloudy, with a Chance of Meatballs" 7/10

Much better than I expected. Witty, charming and outright funny, its a perfect kids/family movie and the animation is first rate, not to mention it has a message ala "Wall-E" about excess consumption. My only gripe is the neurotic pacing. It feels as if the filmmakers were terrified of anyone getting bored, as if it was geared towards those who may be suffering from ADD, thus this film is almost off the chart in its nearly balls to the walls narrative. But I still had a good time watching it and laughed out loud several times.

ffolkes (1980) ***/****

Decided to follow up The Wild Geese with another Roger Moore outing. It doesn't have the grit of that film, and the action is minimal until the climax, but I still found it entertaining. It was a delight to see Moore playing kind of an oddball character (with such characteristics as a needlepoint hobby and obsession with cats), and Anthony Perkins (who until now I'd only known as Norman Bates) was effective as the lead terrorist.

QUARANTINE - 8/10 - very eerie film and well done I thought. I am going to watch REC the Spanish film that QUARANTINE is an English/USA remake of to see how the original compares. If anyone has already seen both, I would be interested to know if I am going to be wasting my time watching REC or if it outshines the remake.

Whichever one you prefer will probably be the first one you watch, because both are literally the SAME MOVIE. About 98% of the dialogue, situations, jump scares, and character traits are IDENTICAL from one version to the next. It's like that shot-for-shot Psycho remake. I liked both a good deal, but be advised they're the SAME MOVIE, only with different actors and languages.
