Pirates of the Caribbean : The curse of the Black Pearl 8/10

Don't understand all the raving about this, sure, it's a lot of fun, but Johnny Depp becomes very tiresome after half an hour, and the best actor in the movie is Geoffrey Rush.
A fun movie, not more, not less !

The Ten Commandments...awesome movie in every conceivable way.

NP -- Home From the Hill, Kaper

Apparently, sometime this September, a DVD is coming out of the making of The Ten Commandments.

28 DAYS LATER - 7
Smashing first two thirds; then devolves into paranoid military fantasy. The best thing was the way the zombies were handled on sped up film; very effective.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN - 8
Very entertaining. Lots of fun. Best of the summer movies. Just right mix of satire and adventure; haven't seen this kind of balance since WIND AND THE LION.

MATRIX 2 - 5
Pretentious verbiage. (Where, by the way, do these characters get their dry cleaning done, with all their swirling overcoats?) Best thing in it was the scene with Gloria Foster who singlehandedly anchored the entire film. Too bad the poor lady died. I wonder if she filmed scenes in the next part beforehand.

(Went crazy buying DVDs so I'm a movie-watchin' fool this weekend!)

3:10 TO YUMA - Great, tightly-structured, well-acted and smartly-paced western, with Glen Ford as the bad guy! 8 1/2 out of 10 stars.

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION - Billy Wilder-directed film adaptation of a terrific Agatha Christie whodunit. Quintessential Charles Laughton, fiery old curmudgeon of a barrister, Tyrone Power as the accused killer and Marlene Dietrich as his devoted(?) wife...twists and turns galore, and a succession of surprises at the end. If you haven't seen this, you just really must! They don't make them like this one anymore. 9 out of 10 stars.

More as I get further into the stack!

JEEPERS CREEPERS 2
Thought it was pretty boring overall, though some amusing gore effects (a freshly decapitated body thrashing about, etc.) and a terrific score really helped. Give it a 6.

DIRTY PRETTY THINGS
What starts out looking suspiciously like one of David Lynch's unsolvable riddle movies actually starts making sense, both on a plot level, and on an emotional, gut-wrenching level. I'm giving it a 9.

OPEN RANGE
I'm hoping this will do for the western what MOULIN ROUGE and CHICAGO did for the musical. Westerns have always been a favorite genre of mine, and I'm really disappointed we don't see more of them on the big screen. I've never really cared for Kevin Costner or his movies, but I really liked OPEN RANGE a LOT, so I'm giving it an 8.

FREDDY VS. JASON
Did anyone else notice that the movies' climax, which takes place on a flaming pier, was oddly reminiscent of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN? Which, by the way, was actually a much, much better movie than this disappointing bore. One of the early drafts of this movie was titled FRIDAY ON ELM STREET, which was far better than they wound up with. FREDDY VS. JASON sounds like a brawl between third-graders. Give it a 2. And that's generous.

SEABISCUIT
Tripe. Give it a 3.

SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS
This movie is much better than its' failure at the boxoffice would lead one to believe. It's a lot of fun to watch, the animation is great, and it's score is one of the best I've heard this year (which is surprising considering I've never liked a single score by Harry Gregson-Williams before). Give it a 7, appropriately enough.

I can't believe someone else saw ESCAPE TO ATHENA!

I thought it was a fun ripoff of THE GUNS OF NAVARONE. wink One of those horrid B-movie casts, but I actually enjoyed it.

One of the few Schiffrin scores I enjoyed.

I wasn't even aware that this was out on video in any form.

The Crimson Rivers - 6
Good Gallic imitation of SE7EN and THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL, but it just fell apart by the end. And why are French actors pretending to be New York detectives?

I give a 0 to ANGER MANAGEMENT with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicolson.
Bbbblllllleeeeeeekkkkkk! Urrrpp. Patoie, Patoie. How could Jack make such an
inane movie?

3 to BULLETPROOF MONK. I like Yun Fat Chou, but he needs to avoid this
type of martial arts exploitation movie. Rather poor movie but sports a decent main
theme.

There is an Action At the Movies documentary playing on Cable Encore hosted by
Samuel Jackson. It is an hour that discusses martial arts movies. Pretty good. There is a
montage of images that is underscored with ballet music that demonstrates the “poetry in
motion” of martial arts. Lovely.
