And one can never have "too much" of Hans Gudegast!

He really was pretty smart to change his name, if ya wanna know what I think....

News of a possible July 17 release of "Gunsmoke" Season 1 can be found here.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7043

Between this and a quick announcement of Season 2 of "Hawaii Five-O", Paramount is hands down winning the award for best studio handling TV on DVD this year (now all they have to do is restart "Taxi")

2007 looks to be a great year in terms of classic TV show releases...Wild Wild West tomorrow and Ironside to be released in April...so where's Mannix?

The different format of Season 1 I think has been the stumbling block to that show coming out.

If Universal doesn't resurrect "Dragnet" and "Adam-12" then I hope and pray that they will license it out to another company like they've done for "Ironside", "McHale's Navy" and now "Banacek".

Yes indeed! Where is "Mannix"?
Its season 1 was so great.
I'm glad that "Gunsmoke" will have a regular season set release.
Still nothing for "The Rat Patrol" season 2.
I remember reading that Paramount planned to release "The Fugitive" after "The Streets of San Francisco"--I pre-ordered the DVD set.
I hope Warner Bros will finally release "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.": at least, the good black and white season 1.

There're still plenty of Universal titles to be released:
"Staccato"
"Thriller"
"The Alfred Hitchcock Hour"
"The Name of the Game"
"It Takes a Thief"
"The Psychiatrist" (plus Spielberg's TV movies)
"Cool Million"
"The Sixth Sense"
"The Six Million Dollar Man"
Needless to mention all QM series that sleep in the secret vault of Paramount... I am daydreaming, my friends!

Besides more of "Dragnet" and "Adam-12", my other Holy Grail titles for official DVD releases are "Ellery Queen" and Season 1 of "The FBI".

Don't expect "Six Million Dollar Man" or "Bionic Woman" anytime soon on R1 because of a rights foul-up that doesn't affect foreign releases (hence the fact it appears already in R2 and R4) but could keep it from appearing on R1 for years (similar to how a conflicting rights thing will keep "Batman" off DVD for who knows how long).

Since we all have requests, how about official seasons of Bonanza? Arguably the most loved TV western ever (I couldn't care less that Gunsmoke ran longer) that currently only has some public domain(!) episodes on DVD.

Here's another vote for "It Takes a Thief"! But with many of my all-time favorite shows already making it to DVD (M:I; Five-O; The Persuaders!; Wild Wild West...) everything from here on out is pure gravy...I'm sooo glad that many of my favorite shows are NOT Universal products!

The essential Lorne Greene on DVD already came out on DVD for me when "Battlestar Galactica" was released. smile

I am hoping that Fox will not abandon "The Big Valley" which didn't get much of a vote of confidence from them when they decided to release just half of Season 2 last month. But Fox of course is not a studio to trust too much given that they're now abandoning the Mary Tyler Moore Show (again) and even Bob Newhart!

For the anecdote, I received a defective "Big Valley" season 1 set: DVD disc 2 side A refuse to play the second episode with Robert Walker Jr.--who plays again a violent disturbed young man as in all 1960's series he is in it: see STAR TREK, COMBAT!, THE INVADERS. I will get my replacement soon: 2 weeks.

One of my favourite series is not on DVD yet:
"The Invaders".
Paramount: do you read me, over?

The eternal pitfalls of double sided discs. I had a defective Big Valley Season 1 disc too but since I'm the type who can't wait, I just went out and bought a new set blending the old discs that played fine with the new one that played fine.

It was the studio's idea, not Gudegast/Braeden's, and he's rather annoyed about it to this day.

The first 7 seasons of Gunsmoke were B&W and quite good. I still think the show played better as a 30 minute drama. Whoever wrote that great end title theme was great. Anybody know who the composer was? I don't.

It says that Rex Koury wrote the theme for Gunsmoke when it was on radio, and then it was just used again on TV.

As an addendum, here's more info on the history of Gunsmoke's different arrangments of the theme over the years.

http://www.classicthemes.com/50sTVThemes/themePages/gunsmoke.html

I was never a fan of westerns growing up, but the DVD format with great extras is a nice way to introduce me to them. I'm still not overly fond of Westerns as a movie genre, but in the TV format, the linkage to the golden age of TV is what I think makes them more worth watching than I used to think.

I am eager to watch two vintage western series, boy:
"Stoney Burke" (1962-1963), starring Jack Lord
"Rawhide" (season 7 and 8), starring Clint Eastwood

I'm sold on STONEY BURKE. I love the title theme, available on the cd of Nelson Riddle conducted TV themes. Bring it on.

MIAMI VICE s.3 out today!

Best season IMHO.

Season 4 is out too but I'll pass for now.
A handful of good eps near the end saved the season but the proportion of poor ones and lack of Jan Hammer music don't give it mush replay value.

Maybe in the future if I find a used, heavily discounted set...

I would very much like to see Stoney Burke being released, what a great cast, I loved Warren Oates in it. I am also hoping for Bat Masterson !

Yeah, count me in, too. The Five-O bonus feature shows a nice shot of Jack Lord in his Burke mode. I didn't know it was a "modern" Western...

Also got the Wild, Wild West season two DVD set yesterday...a thread is in order!
