I always thought the major drawback with Selleck as a film actor was his voice.
.... his voice has never matched his image. His voice makes him sound like a wuss..

as Ford would say......"if the shoe fits"

Look carefully, and you can see him as an extra in a scene with Mae West, in MYRA BRECKENRIDGE.

Our very own Ron Pulliam described Selleck as being--ciggy ads aside--"all smoke and no fire."

So what the hell happened? wink

Here was a guy who had the rugged looks, comic ability & timing, and even producer's clout, yet his career never quite "took off" in the leading man sense like, say, George Clooney's (already an Oscar winner) has. Selleck is likable, for sure, and in his defense he *has* worked on many TV movies (including the "Jesse Stone" films), commercials, done voiceovers and has maintained his career in that he's working, but for someone who was once hailed (IIRC) as the "next Clark Gable", Selleck's post-MAGNUM, P.I. career isn't what I thought it would be.

Your thoughts?

Simply bad luck to be honest.

They only reason he didnt do Indian Jones was because he had a commitment to Magnum. Yet that was delayed before shooting, and he then had enough time to film Indiana jones.
Unfortunately for him, Harrison Ford got the role.

Selleck got magnum, and the rest is history.

I think its simply that some actors are forever associated with their characters, who are iconic throughout the world.

Selleck is an icon for his Magnum role, just like Hasselhoff is an icon for his Knight Rider and Baywatch roles.

Still, i think Selleck has done really well,
in particular he had a good run in the Friends sitcom as well.

And he had several hit movies with 3 men little lady etc

Selleck once told a funny story on THE TONIGHT SHOW about working with Mae West. He said him and some other actors were waiting on the set when West arrived and began talking to them. When she got to him she asked how tall he was. He said six feet seven inches, and she replied, "Forgot about the six feet, let's talk about the seven inches." LMAO!!

Selleck had also once said he gets more fan mail about QUIGLEY than he does MAGNUM. I always hoped for a sequel. One time (again on THE TONIGHT SHOW), he mentioned it and somebody shouted out "Do a sequel!" and he replied, "Don't worry, it's in talks." I guess it just never got off the ground. frown

Selleck's currently doing the voiceover for Florida Orange Juice commercials, so *someone* thinks his voice is alright.

I don't think him not getting Indy hurt him, since he succeeded in getting another iconic role, it's what hasn't happened after the show's end that baffles me.

The Practical Guide To the Universe (1993) was a Selleck-narrated ten-part series that was excellent. It's not even listed among his credits at IMDB. I wouldn't mind seeing this series again.

Selleck also has another "Jesse Stone" TV-Movie in the works:

I actually like the somber, serious tone of the "Stone" films. Quite a contrast with the often lighthearted Magnum, p.i., which did have its dark moments.

Our choice for the film which best showcased Selleck’s style most impressively is Simon Wincer’s woefully underrated

As usual, neo, you nailed it - QUIGLEY is a fantastic film with an absolutely perfect score, and showcases just how good a leading man Selleck could be.

My opinion? Hollywood simply didn't know what to do with him.

Even more than other supposed throwbacks, like Harrison Ford or George Clooney, Selleck really does have an old-fashioned Clark Gable-ish quality that doesn't quite click with modern audiences. There's something more gentlemanly and affable about him.

Which is why QUIGLEY works brilliantly. It allows him to display these charms to their fullest, and kick ass at the same time.

And lest we forget the other lovely and talented performer who makes QUIGLEY work so well...

indeed about QUIGLEY...after that excellent film, I was hoping to see more Quigley adventures...they could have taken that charater to a lot of places -- Selleck certainly has the chops...Selleck's STONE character really proves that!

I posted here earlier this year that Selleck has switched to a new talent agency. He also said he turned down a cameo role i the upcoming MAGNUM, PI movie and thought the movie was absurd. Years ago, Selleck and his friend, Tom Clancy, offered their script for a MAGNUM movie, but the studio rejected it.

I think it's safe to say that his biggest success after Magnum,P.I. was the role of Monica's elderly boyfriend in Friends.

Two of my favorite Selleck roles were in The Shadow Riders and The Sacketts. (Both of which costarred Sam Elliot) I always thought The Sacketts could have turned into a series or at least a series of movies as Louis L'Amour wrote a number of novels featuring the various members of The Sackett family.

He has actually appeared in a series of television films as a character by the name of Jesse Stone, a former LAPD officer who retires and becomes sheriff of a small town in Massachusetts called Paradise. The stories are based on the books by Robert B. Parker.

The films are quite good. Selleck shines as the alsoholic, womanizing, tortured man who accepts a job he hopes will lead to peace and quiet, only to find himself immersed in various goings on.

If you like Tom Selleck as an actor, I highly recommend these movies. They are all directed by Robert Harmon and produced by Selleck himself.

Which is why I bumped the thread. He's got another one out on March 1. The STONE movies are pretty intense stuff for those of us who grew up on Magnum PI smile

We're glad Gary brought up Mr. Selleck's solid turn in

because it's a quiet, understated but still authoritative performance that sorta pre-shadows the traits he put to such sterling use in

... smile

I was watching COMA on dvd several days ago--with Tom Selleck in a brief role as a doomed patient---and Lance Legault (who appeared on MAGNUM, PI) as a security guard/hit man.
