Since it looks as if we’ve seen the last of the releases for this year, notwithstanding next week’s “The Buccaneer,” which doesn’t fit in here, I thought I’d put out the 2013 list of LPs released for the first time on CD. And before any questions are raised, let me say that Varese’s “Brass Target” will not ship until 2014, so it will be on next year’s list. As usual, this is a U.S.-centric list, with only a few foreign LP releases covered. I invite contributors to add foreign LPs that made it to CD this year, and any other additions to the list.

The count for this year is 43 releases, the highest number in five years. Here is the recent history.

Quick Bob, you need to shove in The Amorous Adventures Of Moll Flanders - Quartet, a great release. My favourite from that list is Goldsmiths, Sebastian, it's just so catchy I can't stop playing it.

Thanks. I'm not sure how I missed that one.

That gives Quartet 7 of the 28 releases (25%). They're my new favorite label.

Hi, Bob.

Here's a few Italian LPs which made it onto CD during 2013.

  • INTRIGO A LOS ANGELES (Piero Umiliani) [C.A.M.] {released by Beat Records, July 2013}

  • SALADINO (A.F. Lavagnino) [Campi Editore] {released by Kronos in December 2013}

    Of course the number of these will go down every year, as there are fewer choices as released accumulate.

    I bought exactly one of these from 2013.

    There's probably about 900 U.S. soundtrack LPs that haven't been released on CD. Even if only 25% of them are worthy of release (or capable of being released), at the current pace it will take 10 more years to get them out.

    And most of those are by Kenyon Hopkins!

    I'm as much interested in "CDs released on LP - 2013" as in the thread category.

    some examples: World War Z, Dreed (LP released in 2013), Star Trek into Darkness, and most of all the beautiful gatefold 2LP Man of Steel.

    I would have thought there were lots more than 900, but I doubt that 25% of those would generate much interest, and this is from someone who loves a lot of music from the LP era.

    Although never an LP, Piero Piccioni's IL DEMONIO was on a C.A.M. 45-r.p.m EP and we learn from Beat Records' 2013 CD album that a 14-track monaural program was intended (but never realized) to be issued onto LP around the time of the film's distribution.

    I have long wished to have one of the gaps in my Streisand collection, the soundtrack for "The Owl And The Pussycat," on CD, but when I finally found it after seeing the above (had to go to Blood Sweat And Tears) I found that it was the second part of something else and included just the following cues:

    Tracks 10 through 21 recorded for the film The Owl and the Pussycat
    The Confrontation (Instrumental Interlude - Part 1) (2:19)
    The Confrontation (Instrumental Interlude - Part 2) (2:28)
    The Warmup (Instrumental Interlude - Part 1) (:40)
    The Warmup (Instrumental Interlude - Part 2) (2:17)
    The Seduction (Instrumental Interlude - Part 1) (:21)
    The Seduction (Instrumental Interlude - Part 2) (:45)
    The Morning After (Instrumental Interlude - Part 1) (1:20)
    The Morning After (Instrumental Interlude - Part 2) (1:08)
    The Morning After (Instrumental Interlude - Part 3) (1:30)
    The Reunion (Instrumental Interlude - Part 1) (1:58)
    The Reunion (Instrumental Interlude - Part 2) (:19)
    Just Want To Mention (You've Been Alone Too Long) (The Owl and the Pussycat - Closing Credits) (3:08)
    The Owl and the Pussycat (Instrumental Interlude - Outtake 1) (1:23)
    The Owl and the Pussycat (Instrumental Interlude - Outtake 2) (3:21)
    The Owl and the Pussycat (Instrumental Interlude - Outtake 3) (:44)
    The Owl and the Pussycat (Instrumental Interlude - Outtake 4) (:20)

    Only about 23 minutes, there are none of the very funny dialog clips that were so important on the original LP, which is a big disappointment. It's like releasing the soundtrack for "5 Easy Pieces" and including just the music but none of the terrific dialog clips from the LP with Karen Black and Jack Nicholson and Lois Smith and Fannie Flagg.

    It's always difficult to decide whether to consider a dialogue-heavy LP to be released on CD when we get the underlying music released. The LPs for HEIDI, AIRPLANE, and some others come to mind. Such albums used to be decried by film music fans because of their dialogue. But even in this video age, there's always someone who wants the dialogue.

    Another LP conversion that I missed was for the 1967 film BORN LOSERS. This first of the "Billy Jack" films was a particularly felicitous release given the recent death of star Tom Laughlin. The film's instrumental score, by Mike Curb, takes up 8 of the Tower Records LP's 10 tracks, with vocals filling out the remaining two tracks. Curb's own label made a CD-R available through Amazon last April. The music was previously only available as a download.
