Just saw on the Rozsa site that a new CD by Chandos is on its way. Apparently set for release in March. Consisting of new recordings of various suites.

That sounds like great news. You can't beat MIKLOS.

Where? I don't see this on the chandos site or Amazon.

Edit: Posted at the Rozsa site forum:

Chandos Records will release an all-Rozsa film music CD in March, part of the on going series they have on various composers' music for movies, as well as representing their fourth major anthology on the composer in the last five years. Conductor Rumon Gamba is with his trusty BBC Philharmonic, and the contents will consist of suites from BEN-HUR, SAHARA, THIEF OF BAGDAD plus an all-orchestral JUNGLE BOOK.

A Five Graves To Cairo suite would be interesting for me. Good news none the less.

Ben-Hur isn't really needed....but the other three are very welcome.

Would be nice to get a nice new recording of the symphony and the piano concerto though...

Glad to hear this. I'm always happy for new recordings of Rozsa. But where, oh where, are the Polydor suites Rozsa himself conducted?! That material is among my most desired re-releases.

Very happy to hear Sahara will be included. I'm in.

One of my favorite Chandos film recordings isn't by Gamba, but by conductor Barry Wordsworth with the BBC Concert Orchestra – suites from Blood of the Vampire, Jack the Ripper, Three Steps to the Gallows and Stormy Crossing, on the Film Music of Stanley Black CD.

I guess since these recordings are intended to appeal to the GP--colloquially known as the general public--Ben-Hur is more-or-less de rigueur. And it is just possible--just--that there are citizens of Christendom to whom this score is still a mystery.

As for the piano concerto, does anyone else consider this Rozsa's masterpiece? The violin concerto gets more attention than an only child, but to me it's the orphan piano concerto that shows what Rozsa was really capable of in the concert hall. And particularly the Leonard Pennario version.

"Sahara" suite! Hopefully a prelude before a complete score release?

If you want to sell unlimited CDs to the big market, then BH is an essential. I'd be pretty sure that the recent BBC season of film music concerts and shows, especially John Wilson's Prom concert, would have a bearing on this, given Chandos have released concert albyms by Rozsa.

It'll probably be the orchestral suite, and it'll be excellent. The inclusion of the 'Sahara' orchestral suite is clearly the hook for the afficionados, so there's something for everyone.

The piano concerto is overdue. The symphony isn't a work Rozsa himself liked, and it shouldn't be akong the first rank of concert stuff available.

hmm... pass! what a waste!
If they would rather do proper and full recording (or at least similar 2->1CD reduction like in the case of Sea Hawk) of Thief of Bagdad I wouldn't hesitate a second. In this case I'll survive without another recording of the suites and wait for their more complete presentations, which will happen sooner or later.

Any new Rozsa recordings are welcome but, with regard to the suites, it's a shame the tapes from the three Polydor discs conducted by Rozsa apparently cannot be found.

Intrada, as you probably all know, did a wonderful re-recording of THE RED HOUSE a year or so ago. Wouldn't it be great if their next re-recording of a Rozsa score was a complete SAHARA and FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO ?

And yet many excellent CDs are mastered from LPs. I wonder why this has never been done for these recordings?

This is great news. The more re-recordings (even suites) of Golden Age music the better.

The new Jungle Book suite will be welcomed by me. The Rozsa-conducted Thief of Bagdad suite on the old Varese disc was good, but The Jungle Book suite on the same CD (conducted by Klauspeter Seibel) was very poorly edited, with clumsy joins.

Why is it a waste? Why bother to even say this? Are Chandos supposed to go and cane themselves? That'll teach 'em.

It just never gets through. People just don't get it.

The Chandos series is excellent, an excellent conductor in Rumon Gamba and an excellent set of BBC orchestras in Salford and London. And excellent recordings too, despite the lie (for lo, that is what it is ...) that they're heavy on concert ambience and reverb. Largely put about by rivals anyway.

They've recently released 2 CDs of Rozsa's concert works. They've also recorded over many years, complete compilation albums from many film composers, mostly British. though Korngold had a go.

It's necessary for them to record what is REPRESENTATIVE of a composer's output. You can't market a CD called, 'Miklos Rozsa: The Classic Film Scores that Collectors Don't Already Have'. In fact, I'm amazed that they've included 'Sahara' and that's clearly because they ARE thinking on the collectors too. Frankly, they did not have to do that, and we should be grateful.

And why do you assume you have these suites already? You certainly don't have the Sahara suit which was only ever exposed via a private recording taken from radio broadcast.
Think strategic. Don't think self-masturbation, think of the COMPOSER and new audiences, and HIS legacy. Forget the bull here about small markets of 3,000 across the globe and downward spirals. If his legacy is increased, then there'll be more interest and eventually more of his more obscure material will be released. And remember that Chandos, as with VW and Korngold, might just release a second volume later.

How many times needs it be said? The big hitters like Ben-Hur MUST be perennially available and newly done, as with ANY 'great' work by a great composer. Chandos is a serious classical label. They don't seek the living among the dead.

I love any Rozsa of the 40's. I like many enjoy the Stanyan Spellbound over Intrada's even though it is much shorter. I don't own any of the Chandos discs but will definitely be buying this one. I love Intrada's Red House so it all about the performance of the orchestra.
