Does anybody happen to be well versed on Murray Gold's work for Doctor Who? I'm looking to get started and I wonder where would be a good place to start. There's a lot to choose from with 7 series and all of the special releases.

as far as I remember seasons nr. 3 and 4 I was most impressed with... the recent ones tend to be way, way tooooooo loooooong.

DEFINITELY start with the first three releases... the first has music of series 1 & 2, then series 3 and series 4 get their own releases. If you like these, you can continue from there. The specials that followed series 4 have their own two-disc release, then starting with series 5 you start getting two discs per season, and at least one Christmas special has its own separate release.

Note that as soon as I listened to the first disc, I immediately wanted to buy more. It's fabulous!

Series 6 is probably my favorite, then series 3 and 4...but honestly I love them all. It's all FANTASTIC!

I would say series 1 & 2, and 3 as well. It just seems so fresh and new. Series 5 is awesome too. All the OST's have many worthy cues.

The problem I find with the series 5 releases onwards is that being double CDs, Gold wasn't constrained to culling an entire series down to 75 minutes, and therefore quite a bit of material made it which I find unremarkable. (primarily the comedy material - does nothing for me)

I generally select about an hour's worth of music from the double sets.

The previous CDs were more in suite form which I think works really well.

Very true. I've done the same. I cut a lot out of the last release while making my playlist. My series 7 playlist is only 60 minutes long.

I'd pull the ripcord after series one. After that we end up with music composed by a guy who's in love with the sound of his own musical voice and who reads all his positive press clippings. Gold's music, like nuWho itself, is far too emotional and soppy for my taste, but then I have to keep in mind that the 2005 revamp was written and produced by a guy who worked on Coronation Street, turned Dr Who into a time travel version of that program, and IMO thought of himself as being Rose Tyler (my loony viewpoint, but there you have it), so Gold had to write what the producers wanted.

I recommend listening to them in order too. Some themes grow through the seasons.

I'll totally buy that.

OTOH, I’ve loved every season of nuWho in one way or another.

Another vote for Season 3 or 4. 3 is better overall, but 4 has several of my favorite tracks.

Other than a couple of really stand out tracks (I Am the Doctor) I haven’t been able to keep the monster CDs straight. I’m sure there a people that love every note, but for me they’ve been too much to get through.

I generally hate overtly comic music so a LOT of Smith’s music is out the window for me.

I have some issues with the editing and construction of the Season 6 and 7 releases, but there's some good stuff therein. The music itself though has never really been better (in my humble opinion) than season 4 and the subsequent Specials...if you were just to dip in, I would suggest that's where you start...the Season 1/2 CD has some good moments, but there are some issues with sound (NuWho had not quite found it's musical identity yet, and especially in Season 1 there are issues with mixing orchestra to back electronic instruments, and the result is...perhaps not as good as it could have been I think). However, as stated there is certainly some benefit in listening to them in sequence from the beginning - some themes grow over a period of time, and the 10th Doctor's theme in particular starts from small beginnings but eventually reaches heights that most modern blockbuster score don't even reach.

For me the sheer quality of Murray's music from Series 1 to 5 overshadows my feeling that it has perhaps got a little generic since. So I support the idea of going in order on this. Even my wife listens constantly to the cds up to and including the first disc of Series 5.

I think maybe my tastes are towards whatever Russell T Davies wanted over the present regime. It's much more emotional and dramatic. Either the Steven Moffatt crowd prefer a more low key approach, or Murray's left to his own devices and HE prefers this. Don't get me wrong, the music is still excellent quality overall, but the themes and standout pieces of the 'This is Gallifrey..' kind seem to have faded. Clara's Theme excepted of course.

Hopefully a new Doctor and general feel to the show this provides, will inspire a return to a more robust and thematic approach.

Just to provide a contrary opinion, while it's all good stuff, I prefer the albums from series 5 onwards. Some of the music in the RTD years is a bit OTT, and it seems a bit more restrained and to my tastes in the Moffat years (comparatively). But then again, I prefer the show in the Moffat years, and some of the people above who are recommending stuff from the RTD years probably preferred the show then, so there is probably an element of identifying with the music from specific eras they like going on for some people (me included). I'd probably suggest getting the series 3 and series 5 releases to start, to get a taste of the best of each era. Or just start from the beginning. (Also, the fourth disc of the reasonably-priced 4-disc 50th Anniversary set is all-Murray Gold, and a good taster of the breadth of his contribution to the show).

I hate comedic music as well, though series five has some stand outs. I love Amy's theme. Really the whole fairy tale approach to the series. Mad Man in a Box, Victory of the Daleks, the delicious Vampires of Venice, and the tremendous music in the last two episodes of the series, The Pandorica, and The Big Bang.

I actually have the first 5 series of this music on CD, but haven't really gotten around to listening to them yet (I must admit they were picked up dirt cheap - £1 per CD - from a charity shop in like new condition).
I am NOT a Dr Who fan, but I've got mates who bang on about how great the music is (Hi Mark, Hi John, Hi Roy) smile and I did love the music when the Dr first met Amy Pond as a little girl in series 5(?), just a gorgeous Horner-like choir theme that really stood out for me.
The constant out of breath running around music does wear a bit thin, but as far as current TV scoring goes, I suppose it's up there with the best.
Now, where did I put those glasses wink

As far as I'm concerned the main theme to this series is "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" from Season 3, which is one of my most-played cues of the last few years. Its use toward the end of Season 4 is also exceptional. The various Doctor's Themes are also very good, and there's some great use of the in Season 5 especially, but to my taste 3 and 4 are hard to beat for rambunctious, energetic, memorable score. The later seasons have more of the suspenseful, comic and ethereal stuff, but as has been noted are much too long.

I don’t know if my ear is going, but what is the difference between Martha’s Theme and The Doctor Forever? Or am I confused because the track The Doctor Forever starts out with Martha’s Theme?

I’d have to say that Martha has my favorite companion theme. And as much as I love I Am the Doctor, I’m going to go with Gold’s original Doctor’s Theme (especially season 4). I wanted to hear more of it in Day of the Doctor. OTOH The Doctor Forever was a great intro for Ten.
