Music Box Records presents the original soundtrack from She-Devil by Howard Shore. Based on the novel The Life and Loves of a She-Devil by British author Fay Weldon, Susan Seidelman’s adaptation of the book tells the story of frumpy housewife Ruth (Roseanne Barr) who thinks she got it made with her handsome accountant husband, Bob (Ed Begley Jr.). When Bob meets bestselling romance novelist Mary Fisher (Meryl Streep), the couple quickly separates but the trauma unleashes great powers within Ruth. Once bored and lonesome, Ruth reinvents herself, gets a job, then starts her own enterprise in order to carry out an elaborate revenge against Bob…

Written by Howard Shore (composer of The Lord of the Rings and most of David Cronenberg’s films), the music for She-Devil is a brilliantly energetic score balancing between deliberately overblown romance and devilishly clever cues underscoring Ruth’s sudden urge for creative destruction. The key idea of the score is transformation as we can hear two sides of the most important musical ideas – one for Mary and one for Ruth. There’s also a rich tapestry of musical allusions, ranging from the evergreen song Strangers in the Night (the theme for Bob and Mary) to colorful references from Russian classical music, including Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain and The Gnome.

While there was a previous soundtrack release of She-Devil, it was a “songs from and inspired by“ type of compilation that featured nothing from Shore’s brilliant contributions to the film. Music Box Records corrects this omission by releasing all 42 minutes of the underscore, transferred from the original 24-track master tapes, with several reprises of the great romance theme, Ruth’s chilling vengeance music and a couple of other surprises for the attentive listener. The 8-page booklet features liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film and the score, plus includes quotes from Howard Shore on how he remembers the project.

What is the reason why even French/Spanish labels are releasing US soundtrack from the 80s?

Sorry if I sound negative, but it's been years we are waiting for French releases from the 60s. I can't even remember the last one we got (perhaps de Roubaix Comment les séduire in 2011, and then Italian labels releasing Jansen Les Biches)? I hope this is instead a positive suggestion!!

It's simple - they could made deal with MGM. So why the hell they can't release it's catalog?
Or in that logic I must blame Silva Screens (for example), 'cause they don't release John Barry & other cool British composer's scores from the 60s and release only Sherlock/Doctor Who or other contemporary scores?

Point taken. Although for me contemporary 2013/2014 soundtracks are a different category than "archive" releases.

My comment was under the impression that we get this release "instead of", and not "in addition of". Of course, with the latter option, I wouldn't mind at all.

Here's another point of view - it's impossible to release something.
I can explain this from my own correspondence with Music Box.
I asked them about possibility of releasing complete scores for Fantomas trilogy (by M. Magne).
The answer was short - sadly, most Monsieur Magne tapes from that period was destroyed by fire. And from this reply I understood, that if composer didn't save his tapes by himself, it's very possible, that studio didn't save this material (or MB would worked with Gaumont for long time).
So they would like to release something, but if tapes were lost, they release that scores that is possible to release.

I saw this movie years ago (probably when it was first released). This was long before I was into any film score music (other than Star Wars, Superman, Halloween, and A Nightmare On Elm Street) so I do not recall the music from She-Devil.

However, listening to the samples, it sounds like something I'd really enjoy. It almost sounds like Elfman meets Herrmann. This is definitely going on my wish list.

I have to say I love how Music Box makes it easy to listen to all the samples in one go. The little player is very handy.

Second!

As for SHE-DEVIL, I still remember the main theme all these years later. Neat change of pace for Shore.

I'm so sad She-Devil is not getting all the love it deserves. frown

Here's an early review if you don't quite know what to expect from this little gem:

I'm confused... the review seems to be pretty favorable. Where is the lack of love?

Maybe not the lack of love but the complete lack of interest for sure...

Sucks to read that, I hope people will at least check out the samples; I prefer his thriller/Cronenberg scores so this overblown comedy was not up my alley. We don't get many Howard Shore expansions (that aren't lord of the rings) so to see one selling poorly is a shame.

That's sad to hear. I did my duty and purchased a copy because the samples sounded great.

That is sad. frown

I was all set to order this last week... then Psycho II was announced.

I was only budgeted for one CD last week. Next payday, however, I plan to buy this.
