I'm curious, anybody out here like Thomas Newman's early stuff, like The Man With One Red Shoe, Revenge of the Nerds, The Great Outdoors, Real Genius, Gung Ho etc. etc.? I'm such a fan of his and love those earlier 80's one. I re-watched The Great Outdoors recently and there are a lot of great moments in that score especially the climatic ending. Thoughts???

Yes, I absolutely love his early work. Whenever people talk about fantasy box-sets, one of the ones that would be a dream come true for me would be "Thomas Newman: The 80s". I know that something like that would logistically impossible to work out between all the media companies and wholly impractical to release or for anyone to afford, but the point is that I love it all and damn it, I want it all. I love the b••• of GUNG HO and THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE that has been floating about for years. I love the music in THE LOST BOYS and, as you talked about, THE GREAT OUTDOORS, and I would kill for either. And I want to hear some of his earlier works like REVENGE OF THE NERDS and REAL GENIUS divorced from the films. Of course, I'm a big fan of his work in the 90s as well, particularly 1994 and beyond, when his career really exploded, but I'd love to study the early stuff more closely, before he really found his footing. It's always interesting to me to listen to the early Elfman scores as well (1985 - 1988)... his skill set and style evolved so rapidly from movie to movie and there are a lot of fascinating attempts at scoring different kinds of movies - some which really hold up and others that don't. Thomas Newman's work from the same time period isn't nearly as well represented on CD as Elfman's is, but it's just as wild a ride, I suspect. Damn it, I want more of that stuff to get out!

I TOTALLY agree, an 80's box set of Tommy Newman's work would be AWESOME! Love The Great Outdoors stuff and everyone else.

The Men Don't Leave score was like a dry run for Scent Of A Woman (Men Don't Leave is featured in the trailers for Scent, as well).

Here are Newman's scores from before 1990: 1989 Cookie 1988 The Great Outdoors 1988 The Prince of Pennsylvania 1987 Less Than Zero 1987 The Lost Boys 1987 Light of Day 1986 Jumpin' Jack Flash 1985-1986 Alfred Hitchcock Presents (TV Series) (2 episodes) - The Creeper (1986) - The Human Interest Story (1985) 1986 Gung Ho 1985 Amazing Stories (TV Series) (1 episode) - Santa '85 (1985) 1985 Summer's End (Short) 1985 Real Genius 1985 The Man with One Red Shoe 1985 Girls Just Want to Have Fun 1985 Desperately Seeking Susan 1984 Grandview, U.S.A. 1984 Revenge of the Nerds 1984 Reckless 1984 The Seduction of Gina (TV Movie) 1979 The Paper Chase (TV Series) (1 episode) - A Case of Detente (1979) I'm curious about his score to The Prince Of Pennsylvania from 1988, one of the few I haven't seen or heard music from. Some of the scores I would love to see a release of are Reckless, Grandview USA, Real Genuis, The Man With One Red Shoe (the b*** isn't complete enough), Light Of Day and Cookie. But of course, ANYTHING would be great.

The Men Don't Leave score was like a dry run for Scent Of A Woman (Men Don't Leave is featured in the trailers for Scent, as well). Men Don't Leave was also inspired by Tangerine Dream's Risky Business, the only other film Paul Brickman ever directed, and an early favorite of Newman.
