I know there are many threads on this but I can't find them in a search. Is the original OST available for purchase on CD? Is the OST available as a digital download? How does the sound quality compare with the remastered expanded editions? I own the 20th anniversary version and prefer some of the original OST tracks.

It is still available on CD ( at least on Amazon )

As an album the originally released 1982 rerecording is brilliant, one of the best film music albums ever IMO. Its great having the expanded original score too, but it is a very "bitty" messy listen by comparison.

Even if it's OOP now, I'm sure you can get it second hand on places like eBay or Amazon for a very good price. It was in print for a very long time. So there's no shortage.

And in my opinion, it sounds great. Warmer then the 20th anniversary release.

The "album" release of E.T. is by far the best album to ever be released in the 80s - the expanded tracks are a delight.

I really need a definitive 2 CD release of this score where the album presentation is a must.

There isn't much difference in sound quality from the 20th Anniversary Edition or the MCA album, as both need "fine tuning" and re-mastering. I always need to turn up the volume on these CDs, they are very soft when you compare them to the Limited Editions released in the last 10 years or so.

An example - compare the sound quality of Empire of the Sun and "any" of the other E.T. CDs, and you'll see what I mean.

Even the original "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (that featured the complete Desert Chase) was really soft until the concord releases came out!

This is why E.T. needs a lot of improvement, and a great deal of time spent on when you do find those master tapes eventually, it's only one movie score - there are no sequels, so please guys, give it the love and support it deserves when you finally get to work on it!
Thank You!

Actually a lot of modern releases are too loud. Google "loudness wars"for more details.

The original album of Raiders of the Lost Ark doesn't feature the complete Desert Chase. Only the expanded DCC/Silva Screen release does.

You can always turn the volume knob up, there's no need to have the music permanently loud.

The mastering on the Bruce Botnick produced original album is essentially perfect; certainly a reference recording in terms of sound quality.

As a soundquality freak i must say i was overwhelmed back in the days by the original E.T. Japanese cd release which have a DDD recording, with an absolute superb sound, the best of the best. I do not know if it is hard to find nowadays but i believe this cd is the one you have to look for in my opinion.
One Japanese cd ended on Ebay 4 days ago for $0,40 dollarcents...not kidding!

This album is beautifully programmed.

I really love “The E.T. and Me,” a wonderful arrangement and a beautiful performance of such an intimate theme.

The original album is the one for me. Perfectly produced. The later more complete albums are *gasp* too long big grin E.T. plays perfectly at the 40-some minutes on the original album.

John Williams didn't have to do a whole lot of modified arrangements to make the single LP damn-near perfect.

Nevertheless, it'll be great when we have a version of that original album in the same sound quality the 20th anniversary SACD release has.

I was really hoping for one of the specialist labels to remaster and release a 30th Anniversary release with absolutely everything on it...I still hope it will happen some day - I mean, it's almost all been officially released, just spread across 3 different albums (so far). And I would love the big booklet treatment too....I'm sure there is still plenty to be said...

Greg - who is seeing ET on the big screen once again on Tuesday - here -> http://www.somersethouse.org.uk/film/film4-summer-screen-2014/et-the-extra-terrestrial - as part of my 40th Birthday smile

Hopefully when the definitive edition of E.T. when it comes out; we will get to see the OST as disc 2 ? I did read that this on Mike Mattessino's making of Empire of the Sun article where he says:

" I am hopeful that the expanded soundtrack release[EMPIRE OF THE SUN], with which I am proud to be connected, will help point the way to a bright future for what is, and has always been, a masterpiece. And by no means a forgotten one."

and

"The audience rating for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was not accidentally overlooked. I look forward to addressing this at another time"

So I'm hopeful for E.T. but also it could either be JAWS or CE3K? Since these are all masterpieces to begin with.

When the LP first came out, I loved it for how brilliant it was, but hated it for all the great music that was missing from the film AND the stuff we did have sounding different/re-performed, as per Williams' customary LP releases.
As the years have passed and we are now spoilt beyond belief in regard to re-issues and expansions, I can really appreciate what a thing of beauty the original LP programme was (from the MCA CD re-issue) AND enjoy the extra score tracks from the film.
I can even play the two missing cues (Elliot's Kiss and ET Dying film version) thanks to the dodgy internet. smile

No question the OST was perfect. Though I do like some of the additional cues released on the 20th edition.

They must have taken those cues from the Isolated score from the boxset laserdisc that has been released years ago.

First asking, then begging, finally a bitter look at my mom - and she bought me the STAR WARS double LP at the end of Christmas 1977. But at home I soon realized that this was not the extended audio drama I hoped for (I had a single LP of this already), "just" the music fascinating me a few days later...

...however, in 1982 I bought my first soundtrack LPs from my own allowance: E.T. and POLTERGEIST. Two imposing works from 2 of the finest composers around surely was the best start for becoming a soundtrack collector, those two composers always preferred up to today - although Goldsmith is dead for 10 years now while Grandpa Williams is currently writing tons of notes for the Force again; and who would have thought of this in 1977?

When the first expansion of E.T. was released on CD (1997 or 1998) it came along with the thrilling Rhino release of POLTERGEIST, first time on CD, and because I ordered the two of them, the eventual delivery made me feel like I was back in 1982.

Personally, from the initial E.T. release I do only miss the most fulfilling version of "Adventures on Earth". If the powers of being release this puppy, they should encase the 2-CD (yeah, yeah...) just in a LP sleeve! (Which is in general a better thought of marketing for all this Vinyl nostalgia because I don't believe anyone really cares for the scratchy technology of the past but rather for asthetics like holding a big cover sleeve while enjoying the music)

One of the early "E.T." CDs was mastered by Steve Hoffman (no less) and is now a collector's item among audiophiles. I find it hard to believe that anything could be improved here - particularly if I think of some soundtrack releases which may have more material than their original releases, but are unlistenable due to compression applied...
