Even if it's OOP now, I'm sure you can get it second hand on places like eBay or Amazon for a very good price. It was in print for a very long time. So there's no shortage.
And in my opinion, it sounds great. Warmer then the 20th anniversary release.

Even the original "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (that featured the complete Desert Chase) was really soft until the concord releases came out!
The original album of Raiders of the Lost Ark doesn't feature the complete Desert Chase. Only the expanded DCC/Silva Screen release does.

This album is beautifully programmed.
I really love “The E.T. and Me,” a wonderful arrangement and a beautiful performance of such an intimate theme.

John Williams didn't have to do a whole lot of modified arrangements to make the single LP damn-near perfect.
Nevertheless, it'll be great when we have a version of that original album in the same sound quality the 20th anniversary SACD release has.

First asking, then begging, finally a bitter look at my mom - and she bought me the STAR WARS double LP at the end of Christmas 1977. But at home I soon realized that this was not the extended audio drama I hoped for (I had a single LP of this already), "just" the music fascinating me a few days later...
...however, in 1982 I bought my first soundtrack LPs from my own allowance: E.T. and POLTERGEIST. Two imposing works from 2 of the finest composers around surely was the best start for becoming a soundtrack collector, those two composers always preferred up to today - although Goldsmith is dead for 10 years now while Grandpa Williams is currently writing tons of notes for the Force again; and who would have thought of this in 1977?
When the first expansion of E.T. was released on CD (1997 or 1998) it came along with the thrilling Rhino release of POLTERGEIST, first time on CD, and because I ordered the two of them, the eventual delivery made me feel like I was back in 1982.
Personally, from the initial E.T. release I do only miss the most fulfilling version of "Adventures on Earth". If the powers of being release this puppy, they should encase the 2-CD (yeah, yeah...) just in a LP sleeve! (Which is in general a better thought of marketing for all this Vinyl nostalgia because I don't believe anyone really cares for the scratchy technology of the past but rather for asthetics like holding a big cover sleeve while enjoying the music)

One of the early "E.T." CDs was mastered by Steve Hoffman (no less) and is now a collector's item among audiophiles. I find it hard to believe that anything could be improved here - particularly if I think of some soundtrack releases which may have more material than their original releases, but are unlistenable due to compression applied...
